Poor Crichton despite his best efforts to tell everyone his name is John everyone still ends up calling him Crichton for most of the series :rollin:

I never responded when I was called my last name. Teachers would keep calling my last name and I wouldn't respond. Until I told them that my name is ____ not ____. I was all of 7 years old when I did that... I was reminded of that by the teacher who I did it to a couple years ago. She never forgot it.

Not only that, but it seemed like he was wearing a sign that said "kick my a**" 'cos it seemed like everyone wanted a piece of it...including Aeryn.
Last night was the second time I've seen the Premiere. The first being when the show premiered. I had almost forgotten how funny that scene was where he goes to introduce himself to Aeryn and she immediately kicks his butt then ends up straddling him. Bet that moment fulfilled every guy in the audience dreams. :D Definitely a gutter moment I tell you and wouldn't have minded being Aeryn. :D

Yeah... I did it so many times.... never worked, my teachers were a real peace of art.
But yes, everyone, maybe except for shipmates always call him Crichton.

I watched "Premiere" last night and laughed about the whole "Crichton" thing... it's strange how they'll call Chiana, "Chiana", Aeryn, "Aeryn", and whatnot... especially because Aeryn was formerly a Peacekeeper! I'm stunned there isn't more calling her "Sun" for at least the first season.

In thinkning about it, it seems that they call him John when they're talking to him in an itimate setting on a conversational level. But Crichton when they're in action mode
I was thinking that Zhaan always called him John, but that's not true. Although I think she may have used his first name more than others.

Hey, his last name is an easy one...
I actually like when people use my last name. It is how I address myself when I talk to myself.

I don't even think he ever got to his whole name in the Premiere :lol he kept getting well interrupted :rollin:

That can get confusing if you have brothers. You can't both be called by your last name. That's when a no-holds-barred cage match ensues.
The best example of two people being referred to by their last name is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Dr. Jones.
Yes?

That's a really good point. But I call myself "O'Connor" or "Nomura" sometimes, too... come to think of it.

personally, I hate it- people always have a need to make some sort of joke about my name right after using it, like:
"Hey, Sharp.....yeah, not too Sharp, that's your name isn't it?"
"Sharp...that's interesting....you are, too, aren't you?"
"Sharp. hah."
and like that.

Isn't it ironic that the only one that tends to call him John on a regular baiss is Scorpius.
I thought it was extremely creepy, in a good way, how familiar he tries to make himself with our boy John.

Yep, but when he is really pissed like in Liars, Guns, and Money pt1, when John left him to die he calls him by last name.

The reverse was true in Season 3, Crais addresses Crichton as John & John replies it's Crichton to you! (Sorry - not good at exact quotes)
edited to realize I was thinking it was Scorpy, but then remembered it was really Crais - oohh - to have a memory that worked!!!

Thats cuz he didn't like him... he doesn't like Scorpy either but he wigged him out to much to correct him.
I figured calling him "Crichton" was a combination of things. Some of the denizens of Moya go by their "last" names, like Zhaan, and D'Argo. Could be they took a stab at which was his personal name and guessed wrong.
In the confusion of their introductions, I also thought it possible that the aliens misheard it or misremembered it as "Crichton John", and therefore thought they were calling him by his "first" name.
After a while, they got in the habit of calling him Crichton, I guess. Of course, he probably corrected them later. Or asked them to call him John.
I forget, do Chiana and Rygel actually have last names? None on IMDB for them or Stark. Of course, Jool and Sikozu have plenty to share...
But I do suspect it might also be because it sounds far cooler to have a character yelling "Criiiiii-chtonnnnnn!" in the midst of a tense moment than "John! Joooooooohhhhhn!" Doesn't have quite the same punch.

Rygel might not necessarily need a last name. Since he's royalty, and royalty are usually known by thier first names, on a planet like his the dominars may have only had names like Rygel the sixteenth, or whatever the case may be. Since presumably everyone would know who the dominar was on that planet at the time, they wouldn't need to refer to him by last name, any last name Rygel's ancestor might have had could have been lost in later generations.

Maybe 'John' means something naughty in Sebacean...
No one has ever called me by my last name. Don't know why. My dad still calls my mother by her maiden last name. Wierd. Freudien slip maybe. ;)

Where I live, there is a family of Crichton's, and my cousin is really good friends with one of them called Simon Crichton.
Anyway i was at the beach for the Christmas holidays and I saw my cousin and simon go past and i automatically said to my mum,
"Hey! There goes Crichton and Tim"
Only after I said it, did I realise that I had just referred to Simon as Crichton...damn farscape, its messed up my mind...lol but in a good way!:D
