View Full Version : Rhapsody in Blue or what's up with Aeryn wearing his undies? [spoilers for 1.12]

Now that was complete shocker -- Aeryn sleeping in his Calvin's. So was she curious enough about him to go rummaging through his stuff when he wasn't looking and went "oh, I don't think he'll miss these?" Yep, I guess she did find him "interesting". ;)

Generic Screenname, that is by far one of the coolest things I've ever heard. I can't stop laughing...
But yeah, Chi27, I adored the lines from that.
John: That's my underwear!
Aeryn: What does the writing say on it?
John: Calvin.
Aeryn: Then it isn't yours.
She said it so punctually, it was hilarious.

ROTFL :D Makes you wonder if she was screwing his head when she said that? They must have designer labels out there on some commerce planet. ROFL. Regardless, she just as good as told him she wasn't giving them back. Me thinks Aeryn was curious about what was inside those boxers long before they swapped bodies in OOTMs. :D

Yeah, as she said in PK Tech Girl, she did find him interesting to begin with. *laughs hysterically* But you're right about the commerce world... I just suppose being brought up in PK Ranks everyone had their names written on their clothing because it's an army setting, and she wasn't accustomed to anything else.

Oh, I forgot about that army/PK mentality thing. That still doesn't explain why she was most likely going through his stuff. Definitely curiosity and then she found something she liked when she found those boxers of his.

But I also have to wonder if Calvins are spec for IASA... Do they allow their astronauts to wear any old brand of underwear on manned space missions, or was John packing the Calvins 'just in case' he needed an extra pair?
Hmmm...

Somewhere in space...
Officer Sun: Yes, perhaps. But I still do not understand why I have yet to meet Calvin Klein himself, as he would be, undoubtedly the one who should be wearing his own underwear. Impractical...

You know, Crichton having clothes along always perplexed me... the only think I can come up with was that he had a limited wardrobe and supplies in case he came down somewhere "unexpected" on earth.

Well, all he had was his flight suit, the tan outfit that could have been worn underneath and his undies themselves.. and in the scene were he notices Aeryn wearing his, he could have been..uh... commando at the time. So, he may only have had one pair of undies and she found them where ever it is they do laundry.

Hmm... I like the thought of him going commando. ;) If I had to guess, I don't think he took back his Calvin's from Aeryn. This would've meant he had to go au naturale until they visited the next commerce planet. ;)

Yeah, I can see good dialogue there too.

LOL. Even after explaining the term to her, I don't think S1 Aeryn could've appreciated John going commando as much as S3-4 Aeryn. ;) Then again, she did get horizontal with him in AHR. :D

I've reading this thread laughing my head off, and thinking about the ep where John learns how lousy his 5 senses are in comparison to other species (including smell), which makes me conclude that all of John's belongings must have that certain human aura...

man... I did whole day at the studio "commando style" it was awesome... but that was pretty much years ago, how I envy mr Browder, I wish that I could be regular on a Tv series so badly... but hey, life has a way of not turning the way you wanted it always... had to leave behind acting and focus on other things...
anyways sadness aside, I did notice that, I found it very attractive, dunno there is something about a girl in a set of calvin's that just is kinda sexy... but yeah... just how many pairs did he have when he left? cuz' 4 yrs in the same set would get kinda crusty don't ya think?

Despite the fact that while John and his dad are walking along in cape canaveral and John says 'see you tonight' I really don't think that they launch shuttles up, perform a special experiment - that sends Crichton out far enough that a 'recovery vehicle' needs to be there in position to retrieve him - and get back to earth and still be home in time for supper. I chose to ignore that John said he'd be back that evening as a whoops in the writing and that after his mission he would have been returned to orbit via the recovery vehicle and that the shuttle would then finish the rest of whatever mission it had, or per chance he would have rendezvoused with Mir or the fledgeling space station and wait for the shuttle to meet up with it before re-entry. Given all those posibilities it is most likely the case that he was gonna be up in space for a bit before he was back down in florida.
Thus! he had a change of undies.

I have a solution. He wears the underwear that goes with the uniform in "A Bug's Life". They must have known the uniform was there before that episode to formulate their ruse in the first place.
As a side note, no one ever finds it odd that John is speaking a language they've never heard before. The only reason I can come up with for this is that Peacekeepers don't have a single language, and are spread out so far that it's not surprising to find one whose language you haven't heard before. In fact, that accent John puts on in "A Bug's Life" is totally unnecessary and by season 4, he drops it when impersonating a Peacekeeper.

It's the translater microbes. Everyone John meets out there hears him in their own language just as John hears them in English. So, no one catches on to the fact that he's not speaking Sabatian. Unless of course translater microbes don't work on your species then you would hear the differance and you would have to learn English in order to talk to John. Remind you of a marginaly cute redhead with lousy taste in men?
Bargaintuan

No. Translator microbes don't change what one hears. They simply allow one to understand other languages. That's how Aeryn (and the others) are able to learn English in season four despite the microbes.

I hadn't considered it before, but it could be said that Aeryn started learning English even before 'A Human Reaction', unless the translator microbes were what helped her 'read' the label on John's undies.
She could probably read it and translate it into Sebacean in her head. Martin Brodeur, goalie for the NJ Devils spoke French as his first language. Playing and living in New Jersey at first, he said he translated English into french in his mind. Just a thought.
Anyhow. g_s, you rock. Love the comment. :D . She probably thought they were more comfortable than military issue uns. Jirls, how many times have you stolen your husband/boyfriend/friend that's a guys' boxers? I know I have

I have no comment on the "underwear issue" :scare: And while i agrii with u on Peacekeeper language and translator microbes,i think that Johns reason for doing and accent is not unnesesary. I belive that he is going into a role like an actor would... forcing himself to become this other person so he wont blow his cover! :critter:

Hi. New guy here. Thoughts:
ON TOPIC:
I think it's safe to say that a utilitarian culture like the Peacekeepers wouldn't place as much value on comfortable undergarments as we Earthlings do. Other cultures and races surely would, but I don't imagine the physiognomies would be compatible. Add to that the fact that in the first half of S1, the crew really had no money to buy creature comforts with. What it comes down to is, if John didn't keep his eyes peeled during communal laundry days, his scivvies were bound to wind up in Aeryn's wardrobe. CK boxers are muy comfortable. I doubt even a hardnosed PK commando like Aeryn could have overlooked that fact.
(thanks to my girlfriend for pointing these things out to me)
OFF TOPIC:
John's fiegned PK (Aussie) accent was obviously more for our (and one supposes his) benefit, and was ruled out for his trip to the Gammak base as being too confusing or pointless. That said, I thouhgt he did it rather well, and would have enjoyed him continuing to use it, even if it really had no bearing on translator microbe operation.
That said, if accents didn't translate, then why would we be hearing the PK accent as Aussie? Most other alien races seem to have distinctly non-Aussie accents. Perhaps the sonic quality of the vocal commands serves as a carrier wave of sorts for the microbes to filter to the correct parts of the receiving brain. Perhaps the tone, inflection and general mouth shape actually do translate in an odd sort of way.
I might have to have a stab at writing something about that.
