SCI FI Brings Back Farscape

SCI FI announced it will be bringing back Farscape with an all-new miniseries — called Farscape: Peacekeeper War — slated to air in the fourth quarter of this year. The four-hour miniseries picks up where the cliffhanger series finale left off and will reunite John Crichton (Ben Browder), Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) and the rest of the Moya crew.

Farscape creator Rockne O'Bannon and executive producer David Kemper wrote the miniseries, which was directed by Brian Henson. "Peacekeeper War" was produced by the Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment, and executive produced by Robert Halmi Jr.

SCI FI will make the official announcement at noon on Monday, April 5, during the channel's advertising sales "upfront" presentation.

And according to Matt Roush we'll see news on TV Guide online soon:
Like any Farscape fan, I was thrilled to hear the news of the anticipated miniseries production. Since that time, I am surprised that little to no news of the production can be found. As a sci-fi fan in general, I am accustomed to the fervor associated with grasping for any nugget of information regarding a production. I find it odd that so little can be said about this highly anticipated return even among its own inner circle of followers. My question is, do you believe that the reason for so little info is that Henson is still looking for a home for the miniseries before announcing its official production, thereby releasing the floodgates for news on the miniseries? If so, have you heard any rumors as to where Farscape the miniseries might find a home? I worry that the final outcome of this unresolved situation will not only make or break the miniseries' ratings, but also any possible return for the series itself. — David L.
Matt:
I don't know why there wasn't more news issuing from the set during production, but I think your wait is nearly over for news about when and where the Farscape miniseries will air. Keep an eye on our entertainment news column. An announcement may have gone out by the time you read this. And I imagine once the miniseries nears its airdate, there will be plenty of fan-oriented news and features to satisfy your appetite. I know I'll be counting the days until I get to revisit my favorite sci-fi show, possibly ever.

Funny way for the news to get out. Why keep it ultra-secret for such a long time and then leak it out on SciFi wire? Having said that --- I don't really care (It was just odd) since we're getting our miniseries and it has a place to be shown!!!

As crappy as the new shows are on SciFi, the miniseries seem to be of better quality. I didn't watch BG, but I did like Dune and Children of Dune, and Riverworld was OK.

I just hope they plan to actually put some money behind promoting it, like they have done with other mini-series, and not to kill it through negligence like they did with the series. Their freaky way of holding off on news and this weird little release are not inspiring me with great confidence so far.

Well all I can say is that I am very happy that Farscape is back for 4 more hours.

When Bonnie (it's gotta be her making this announcement) gets up there and mentions Farscape all hezmana is going to break loose. This is going to be HUGE good press for skiffy. Now, what we really need to do is to get this a 4.0 rating so we can pressure them into reviving the show for good and giving us Season 5!

Well, like it or not, SciFi has always been the best hope for Farscape, and I think it remains the best hope for getting a season 5. Just look at the genre shows that have been popping up (and crashing down) on other networks. To have gotten a 4-year-run on SciFi was extraordinary. Farscape would never have made it on any other network -- either it would have been pulled immediately because ratings weren't high enough or it would have been totally frelled by interference from network execs and become yet another Star Trek.

And SciFi is obviously rethinking it's space-based show philosophy. They just put Andromeda on as a lead-in to Stargate. How about Andromeda at 8, Stargate at 9, and Farscape at 10! Geek heaven! :D

Do you think skiffy is laughing at us today?

Nope - IMHO, Skiffy are desperately trying to save face, having realized that it would look incredibly bad for them if the mini did really well for another channel.

No channel is ever going to send out a press release saying "OK, we frelled up, you guys were right all along".

But, reading between the lines ....

I have never watched the SciFi channel but have always sympathized with your frustrations at the odd way that they are showing reruns. Hopefully the Canadian Space channel will be able to get their hands on the mini before next year. Our channel is at least showing the FS reruns daily - and in order!

Great news and thanks for the post.

Skiffy picked up the mini for a reason. Maybe it's just me, but I'd say Scapers won this one and now that we know where it's going to be, we just have to get the eyeballs there and hope Skiffy works with us on it. Though, seeing as Bonnie thinks we've got class, that may not be too awfully rough.

SCI FI Fans Bring Back Farscape... Selena, you forgot Ms. Hammer's famous dictum that "fans do not/should not drive the creative process" - this was said in response to the BSG campaign.

Whatever the circumstances, Skiffy probably had to pay UP FRONT, rather than stagger the payment as they had in the past - after all, none of THEIR money went into the production of it... AND yet again, they likely won't a slice of the DVD sales, unless they put some MORE money into their bid.

1. Swallow pride
2. write and thank Bonnie for broadcasting the mini
3. ask SciFi to please air the reruns this summer in order at a reasonable hour
4. Thank Henson, Rockne and DK
5. Do "our thing" to get eyeballs
6. Find out if ADV will get the DVD rights
7. If so, what will/can they do for advertising
8. Write to talk shows and request the actors be brought on to promote mini as it nears broadcasting
9. Get the movers and shakers of savefarscape.com some national press. Military project would be great.

This is really in keeping with what MediaSavant has said many times: it's up to the network to make the announcement when they're ready. It seems they are about ready and, since Sci Fi Wire is a part of the Sci Fi Channel, it makes sense that they would want to "leak" it to them before anyone else could say anything.

FAR OUT!: Farscape is returning home to the Sci Fi Channel. The cabler has finalized a deal to air Farscape: Peacekeeper War, the highly-anticipated four-hour miniseries that will tie up all the loose ends left dangling when Sci Fi axed the acclaimed drama last year. The project has already wrapped production and is slated to air at the end of the year.

It's good to hear that the Mini will indeed air this year, and as much as I detest SciFi, it is the best place for the widest audience to see it, and therefore the best chance at getting new episodes.

My greatest fear is that Sciffy was motivated to do this from an "SF" mode (that's Save Face, not Save Farscape). Showing reruns in the middle of the night, and going to a random episode showing for the Sunday night/Monday morning time slot is not the way to build interest, and since SciFi had probably committed to this some time ago, I'd think an improvement in the way they handle Farscape would be evident by now. SciFi has always done an absolutely sucky job of promoting Farscape, even when they supposedly "believed" in the series. If that same philosophy in promoting Farscape continues, I don't see much future for Farscape on SciFi beyond the mini.

If this is mostly an attempt to keep any other network from scooping SciFi and they do not truly beleive Farscape is actually good for SciFi, then the mini will air, and that will probably be it, unless some film deals come from it.

I would hope that the pending official announcement of the mini would be accompanied by an announcement that the entire series will rerun in order during a weekday evening time slot, culminating with the airing of the mini.

If they don't announce plans to do this, I'd suggest that we politely tell Skiffy that we want to watch the entire series once again before the mini.

The other option is that we put aside our distaste for SciFi and actively promote the mini with as much energy and enthusiasm as we put into the Save Farscape campaign.

I think now is the appropriate time to send Skiffy some Scaper love. Doing anything other than that will only harm our cause.

I outlined it in another thread, but here are some points I came up with:

Let's look at it realistically.

1) They've received a lot of Scaper Retribution. Wouldn't it be nice to show them how great we are to work WITH?

2) It never hurts to thank someone. Skiffy didn't have to do this. They did. Especially after the anger they invoked and the things they've said. Let them spin it all they like, it's still tough to admit you let down a fervent fan base. They could have laughed it all off and not done a thing to support Farscape.

3) They announced it as a lead story in Sci Fi Wire...that gives me hope that they do have plans for promoting it.

4) We have always taken the high road. We are the winners here. Let's let them know that we want to HELP them promote Farscape.

5) I've said it from the beginning. There would be no Farscape without Skiffy. Skiffy was the ONLY network willing to give Farscape ANY kind of chance. If for nothing else, we owe them our gratitude for that.

6) This is our big chance to get S5. Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars has a LOT of potential for the future. (At least the title does.) Let's not burn ANY bridges. At all.

So...those are my thoughts on the whole thing. Time to spread the HAPPINESS. Not disgust about past happenings. Let bygones be bygones and move on with the news from today.

And besides ALL of that...this isn't about us OR Skiffy...it's about Farscape. Always has been. We don't NEED the credit. We know we did it and so do most of the people out there in the industry. Ask any reporter/news outlet who has received Scaper love from us.

It's all about Farscape. Always has been. Always will be. What's best for getting more eyeballs and making more headway with it? Showing Scaper love all the way around. Being gracious winners...

That is the worst Dalek model I've ever seen.

I've been thinking lately that it's possible Sci-Fi didn't really want to lose Farscape in the first place. They cancelled the series so they could renegotiate a better deal for themselves, but that didn't happen. The channel seems to be all about money these days, and Farscape wasn't doing badly. The problem is that Sci-Fi wasn't getting much out of it.

I always thought a mini-series to wrap up a series was gonna be a tough sell on any station other than the one the series aired on, though.

Twich has made some great points, and I couldn't agree more. No matter how we really feel about SciFi, this is not the time to barrage them with "told you so" messages, or show any negativity. If negative sentiment must be expressed, the place to let that out is here, on our home turf, not on other boards, and especially not on SciFi's board.

It's time to be big about the whole thing--let SciFi take all the credit they want. Those who really count know just how much a part this campaign played in bringing Farscape back, and folks like Matt Rousch will give credit where credit is due.

These are all great ideas, and IMHO, make a great outline for a formal plan of action.

I might hate Skiffy (of course, I'll be working on that relationship with my therapist now), but this is great news. Plus, we get to be really smug when the mini airs because "We were right! The show was good! Tra la la!" :D

I wonder if Skiffy's decision has anything do to with its semi-recent ownership change... Maybe the NBC execs thought Farscape was a great cable show and "suggested" to Bonnie that she pick up the mini. ;)

I really don't understand why anyone could look at this as anything but positive.

If the mini aired anywhere else, it would be a huge uphill battle to gain viewers. You have to remember that as strong and active as we are, we're a very small minority of the nearly two million viewers needed to make the mini enough of a success that more Farscape might be possible.

At least Farscape is associated with SciFi in the minds of many old viewers, and through the publicity given to the cancellation. While we may bristle at the headline "SciFi Brings Farscape Back", it's a ready-made package with pre-existing associations. And, as I must have posted on this forum a half dozen times, by the time the mini airs, it will be a new SciFi with new controlling interests.

It really is time to forget the old and move forward. Carrying the hatred and resentment forward will only hurt Farscape, not help it.

If we want more Farscape, the airing of the mini on SciFi is the absolutely best scenario that could happen.

To quote our boy, John: CAN I GET A HELL, YEAH?!?!?

(Before I completely go out of my frelling mind, I wanted to say, Yo, Nixer...killer costume! You rock!)

This is my reply on another thread here, but I'm feeling like speading the word, again and again. FARSCAPE is going to happen again -- HOT DAMN!

But before we get too excited, I'm going to probably state some of the obvious, but needs to be stated again and again, nonetheless. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, to let the suits know that the customer is always right and our voice will not be ignored.

Wow...for a moment there, I sound like Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction.

Seriously though, we came together to save Farscape, and now our crew is returning to the airwaves!!!

Now the real work begins.

We need to write thank you letters to The Henson Company and (eeewww...) The SciFi Channel for bringing back Farscape. (Yes, the one to Henson can be a lot nicer!) We need to let them know that come air time, we will provide ratings that make Battlestar Galactica look like Tremors: The Series. And we will be there, getting friends and family (and even family PETS) turned on to the show before air date. We aren't going to TiVo this event, folks. We have to be there, and we will.

We've been there since Farscape I was "free and flying" and we've been there since John and Aeryn were last seen in that tiny rowboat...

The "Fires of Moya" have been lit and now we must answer its call.

Be there, my fellow Scapers. Be there.

You know, it's only now beginning to sink in.

I knew about the mini for some time (of course). And I read the SciFi news yesterday and was extatic.

But only now am I beginning to really process that there will be more. That we will see Moya fly once again, that we will see Scorpy scheme again, that we will see Crichton and Aeryn look at each other in that way that makes me melt, that we will see Rygel, Chiana, D'Argo, Pilot yet again. After all this time, I am even excited to see Noranti! (These aren't mini spoilers, just idle speculation).

That there will be four more precious hours of adventure and clever lines, and hairpin plot turns, and love, and angst, and laughter. And lots and lots of leather :D

And right now, I am just incredibly happy with that.

I'm wondering if Skiffy will, in fact, put a bit of their advertsing muscle behind it. Battlestar Galactica got MAJOR coverage on the network, in their magazine, and even on "The Twenty" (these featurettes/commercials shown twenty minutes before a movie...) at Regal Cinemas. Howard Stern is pushing MAD MAD HOUSE, Tripping the Rift, and Scare Tactics (and it's still not helping...only MMH appears to make Skiffy's Top Ten, and their ratings are FAR LOWER than Farscape's supposed "bad numbers."

I wonder if they won't pull an "NBC" and not advertise. (NBC, on pressure from the fans, shot a HOMICIDE movie...and it got ZERO advertsing, except for on their network.) If so, our job is still not done...

YEP! Maybe it isn't a "Season 5" but it is an opportunity. Look at all the TV-movies Alien Nation spawned...so let's make this opportunity for Farscape a major wake up call to Skiffy.

Let's make them realize we are out here and we are watching...

Watching...and waiting. For more! :)

While on the one hand it may seem odd that the channel that cancelled it will be airing the mini, on the other hand it makes perfect sense that the channel that gave it life in the first place will be airing the mini.

Well, it could be the end...but it doesn't have to be! I'd say it depends on how well we do in getting people to watch the mini. The BG mini was an overture, and it did well enough that SciFi ordered a series. If the FS mini does well, I'm sure the door will be open for more.

As for the mini's storyline, they've tied up some loose ends, I'm sure, but there isn't any reason to think they've splashed "And they all lived happily ever after." across the screen at the end. I'm confident that Henson, O'Bannon and Kemper left the door unlocked when they left the room...
