Child's mohawk causes debate (http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/04/05/child.mohawk.ap/index.html)
AUBURN, California (AP) -- It used to be that schoolchildren might get their mouths washed out for using blue language. These days at Pleasant Ridge Elementary School, they're more likely to have their hair washed out -- for sporting a blue mohawk.
Parents of a 6-year-old boy say they plan to consult an attorney after a school principal washed bright blue dye out of their son's punk-style haircut.
Levey Padocs Jr.'s father said he allowed his son to get the distinctive 'do more than a month ago for behaving better in class.
But parents of the boy's kindergarten classmates complained the haircut would spoil an upcoming class photo, so Principal Derek Cooper said he washed the boy's hair in the nurse's office after getting permission from the boy's mother.
The boy's father said neither he nor the mother approved the washing. They plan to discuss the situation with an attorney.
"Leave him alone. He's not a problem child. He's not hurting anyone," Levey Padocs Sr. said. "He's an individual, and that's how he's expressing his individuality."

seeing as how I had a mohawk once... and use to color my hair... I think the parents should sue. If they weren't consulted... the school had no right to wash the kids hair. I am making the assumption that this is a public school... and if they let some students wear clothes that would make porno stars proud... they shouldn't complain about the kids mohawk.

There are such horrible things going on in our schools today and they have to worry about a hairdoo, what the frell!?!

Hair is a part of your body. It isn't like clothing. I don't think they have any right to dictate what a student's hair should be like (and especially they shouldn't take matters into their own hands and mess with it) at a public school.

My grandfather took my cousin to the barber when he was about that same age and got him a mohawk. I don't think he let him dye it, though.
I can't believe how much power some of these school officials think they have. I don't think that would fly in our school.

:grr: if they EVER tried to do that to me (i currently have indigo blue and fuschia hair) I would be.so.angry. (but i guess high schools are more open to that kind of thing)
that principal makes me very angry.

Sue? NO! You lay a hand on my kid and all he's guilty of is looking stupid, then you suffer my wrath wich would be extremly painfull and embarassing.
I'm not the type to go allowing my kid to dye his hair, or even get a mohawk, however, I'm also not one to go tearing into others who do such. It's just hair dammit.
Yeah, I'd beat the principle without hessitation, too much of this type of dren occurs regularily and we allow it, or we sue. I feel like suing the parents for not beating the principle.
Yeah, I'm teed off.

I don't know, I wonder if the principal would wash the hair without permission. I mean with everything like it is, that's asking to get fired. Just my thought.

Wow...there are more serious problems in schools than someone's hair! This kid wasn't hurting anyone. It's hard to understand the way some people think.:grr:

and the nerve of all these parents complaining that this child would ruin the school photo! individualism and creativity from a kid so young and they want to squash it cause of a stupid photo they won't have in 10 years?! dudes its just hair. look at the 70's. bad clothes and bad hair. that wouldn't be so "aesthetically pleasing" now, and i don't see parents complaining that girls in junior high wear skirts too high or have wonderbras that they are too young to be wearing.
and i agree, there are a lot more issues than hair. let him have his mohawk! don't complain about the mohawk cause i'm going to go complain about the kid in the front with thick glasses and a bowl haircut "ruining" the photo!

I still wonder why a 6 year-old wants a mohack.
On the other hand, if the principal would've washed out a big blue mullet, would anything have been said?? :)

six year old with a mohawk.... I mean it's not like the kid was wearing a t-shirt that read f**k you! while I still can't wrap my brain around the concept, if the kid wants to look like an idiot and his parents approve, who are we to judge?

Six year olds don't exactly have refined tastes. [Did you see the movie "Big Daddy" and remember what the kid wore to school when Sandler's character let him wear anything he wanted?] This kid probably thinks a blue mohawk is the coolest of cool hairstyles.

we dont understand why some people leave the house looking like they do either, but it's their freedom to do so. this kid wanted a mohawk, so what? his parents didnt see anything wrong with it, why should a school? it's not like they have a dress code.

Well then, it's good to know there are plenty of people on this board who judge people to be idiots based solely on their choice of hair styles/colors.

I dye my 5-year-old daughter's hair pink or purple for special occassions. She thinks it's absolutely the coolest. But there's a rule at her school that students cannot dye their hair in "unnatural colors". So now I have to make sure not to use a dye that won't wash out within two days during the school year.
Depending on the kid, a blue mohawk might be cute. As for the prinicipal and other parents...if there is no existing rule dictating a child's haircut, they have NO RIGHT to complain about how the boy styles his hair. Of course, I never buy group photos either. Why on Earth would I want pictures of other people's kids on my wall?

question: if the kid had his haircut for a whole month, how come it took that long for parents to complain about it? i mean, if the principal was soooo concerned, he would've noticed the 6 year old with a mohawk the first few days he had it.

Who's to decide who looks like an idiot or who is cool and who looks normal??? It's a matter of opinion, I don't force anyone else to dress or do their hair the way I like it either. :(
If anyone, that principal is an idiot for having that kind of attitude and should know better :whip:
I had to deal with a lot of that shit when I was a teenager and still to date get people telling me how I would have been such a pretty girl if only I didn't have that hair do and why did I dress like that grrrrrrrrrrrrr........... These are people I wouldn't have wanted as friends if they paid me for it in the first place. Idiots!
Yey for individuality!!!

I think the band AFI sums this up nicely with their song 'I wanna Mohawk (but Mom won't let me get one)
I may be ten years old but I still know what's up.
I wear my Cramps shirt almost every single day.
I want to sag my pants.
I want to pogo dance,
but mom won't let me so I might just run away.
I wanna ride my skate.
I wanna stay out late.
I want a mohawk but mom won't let me get one.
I wanna go to shows.
Don't wanna pierce my nose.
I want a mohawk but mom won't let me get one.
I may be in fourth grade,
but I know what's going on.
I listen to the Misfits almost every single day.
Don't want to take a nap.
I want a TV tat,
but mom won't let me so I might just disobey.
I wanna ride my skate.
I wanna stay out late.
I want a mohawk but mom won't let me get one.
I wanna go to shows.
Don't wanna pierce my nose.
I want a mohawk but mom won't let me get one.
