Actors Whip Easter Bunny at Church Show

GLASSPORT, Pa. - First, the Passion of the Christ. Now, the torment of the Easter Bunny?

It may not have been as gruesome as Mel Gibson's movie, but many parents and children got upset when a church trying to teach about Jesus' crucifixion performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs.

People who attended Saturday's show at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny," and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children. "He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped," Salzmann said.

Patty Bickerton, the youth minister at Glassport Assembly of God, said the performance wasn't meant to be offensive. Bickerton portrayed the Easter rabbit and said she tried to act with a tone of irreverence.

"The program was for all ages, not just the kids. We wanted to convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ," Bickerton said.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"It was very disturbing," Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting."

not meant to be offensive? sorry, but traumatizing kids' view of the easter bunny is like showing the tooth fairy on the street corner talking to a guy in a rusty oldsmobile. its just wrong and it's incredibly offensive.

and lets play nice here..this isn't a reflection of any church as a whole, just a few very VERY careless people.

Whoa!!! How very deranged. Whipping the poor hippity hop. OFCOURSE there's an Easter Bunny! Bunnies have been revered as fertility symbols during springtime renewal for longer than Jesus. Bunnies, eggs, flowers - SPRING. Spring is about rebirth.

not to mention what bunnies DO in springtime...

I understand that certain religious groups do not like their congregational members holding up symbols like the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs, due to their pagan heritage. But at this point in history, the Easter bunny has been so sanitized, it is merely a cartoon of itself and fit only for children. So where would this end? Flogging Santa as he slides down the chimney? Locking leprechauns in the pillory? A more appropriate approach would have been to educate the parents and encourage them to remind their children that Easter is about more than bunnies.

I'm just wondering what they were trying to accomplish. I mean did they think kids would WANT to come to church after this? It's appalling. We don't "do" the Easter Bunny at our house, but I would never imagine trying to do some public presentation on why/how he isn't real and THEN beating him to death! That's just....stupid.

Wouldn't you like to have seen how THAT planning meeting...the promotion...all of it went down? I'd be curious to see how their minds worked...

"Next on our agenda, we will plan out our Christmas special. What better way to spread Christmas joy and cheer and the message of Christ by taking Santa out of the picture via lighting him on fire in front of every child in our town? That will surely get the message across and will be a great way to celebrate the birth of Christ."

The tooth fairy did apologize for that. ;)

I can't beleive a church did this to kids though.

I don't understand what a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman have to do with Easter.

That was pretty tasteless. There are so many positive ways they could have told the Easter story to make it meaningful to kids.

I think the Energizer Bunny should be the status symbol for cockroaches.. they never frelling die and they keep GOING AND GOING AND GOING.. etc etc etc..

as for this story, this is sick and i also ask the question, "do these people have children??" i'm hoping no.. this is an idea that just about any parent would take one look at and respond with "umm.. no.. i don't think so!!!"

After they finish with Santa, they'll launch a live reindeer with a trebuchet to demonstrate that reindeer are incapable of flight!
