View Full Version : An observation (and request) re: text colors in posts

Now that we have all the beautimous new skins for the new board, I've noticed some people are personalizing the text color of their messages (in addition to their sigs). I just have a little observation and request. Some of these colors are incompatible with the different skins (ie., they don't show up at all and people using those skins can't read the relevant post).
So if you feel an overwhelming need to personalize the message text color rather than just letting the skin determine it, I know I'd appreciate it a lot if you'd "beta test" your color of choice in the different skins to make sure it's legible in all the skins. It's not a big deal in sigs because, as enjoyable as they are, they're not that important. But invisible posts are kinda...freaky.
You know... I'm just saying...

You could just highlight the text.

No, that doesn't necessarily work. For instance, if someone specifies a light text color on the default skin (which has a white background), then highlighting it doesn't make it visible. You have to either hit reply or change your skin to one of the ones with a dark background.
This probably is most problematic for those of us using the default skin, since all the dark ones should be able to see any light color, but even then, different font colors will look horrible on one skin even though they look pretty on the one the message author uses. Honestly, it would be much easier if everyone could just let the skin control the color for the actual message and use their sigs to express their individuality and creativity.

Okay, you're obviously pulling my leg, but for those who actually might not understand, lemme 'splain.
Depending on the skin that you have chosen, you will have more or less difficulty reading text in certain contrasting (or not so contrasting) colors.
For instance:
The following is in black: this is black text.
The following is in white: this is white text.
The following is in sienna: this is sienna.
The following is in dark slate gray: this is dark slate gray.
The following is in dim gray: this is dim gray.
The following is in yellow: this is yellow.
The following is in dark olive green: this is dark olive green.
The following is in magenta: this is magenta
Now depending on the skin you are currently using, some of these will be more visible and more pleasant combinations. If you'll go to the bottom of the screen and change to a different skin, you'll see that different colors react differently based on the skin you are currently in.
However, if you leave the message text alone and don't specify a color, it's always highly legible in whatever skin you use.
Makes sense?

Yeah... this is the reason I've never used another color of text, because thankfully every skin can read on the default fairly well. :aok:

I agree atlantagirl ... I noticed that the first time I checked out the other 'skins' If I can't see a post I just switch 'skins' for that post but as I decided to stay with 'Moya' I try not to post in really dark or really light colors. Although I must admit I do use red to highlight a point and that would not show up on the PK 'skin'. We've always have had a problem with dark colors on the Moya 'skin' anyway.
I couldn't find a color I really liked on the PK 'skin' and the white backgrounds are really hard on my eyes so that's why I'm back to Moya.

I don't know how the skins get here, but is there or could there be more in the future?? Like maybe a Hyneirian type one with middle-dark green background, lightish gray text, and maybe either a darker gray or a reddish brown accent color. Just a thought that jusr popped in my head. ;):)

That would be cool. But how many Hynerians are even on the show? I mean... I'm talking about for the banner, what would it be... Rygel, the evil Hynerian chick (forgot her name), Rygel encased in stone, and Rygel encased in hot lava whatever? Oh well. I'm sure it could be done somehow.

I think that's what was aluded to.
However, I like colored posts and if anyone really wants to appreciate the full effect then they will have to flip thorugh to skins to see what was really said. :ewink:

uh, atlantagirl, what browser are you using? I use default 'cuz I'm a sucker for high contrast bright screens [prolly just too many late nights at a TERMINAL. green letter on black, no graphics.] but when I highlight the text turns black with a light blue selection background, and where the text is dark the selection turns the text white on a black selection background. I use IE6.0.2800, although it works similarly at home with Safari on my mac. Anyway it is still a good idea to Beta your message if you want it to get out... ;)

I am using VB3 and alot of the light colors dont show too well. I feel that so many people are using different skins so I say use the colors you want and if they cant read it then go to a skin that you can. I use pink in my sig because its me. But most people have seen my sig a thousand times so it dont really matter. Use the colors that you feel are "you". :D:D
