It's Mother's Day this week-end.
I thought it might be fun to see the kinds of gifts that people give Mom.
What is the most unusual gift you've ever given your mother?
And if you're a Mom, what is the most unusual or touching gift you have ever received?

The oddest thing I've ever received for Mother's Day was a green, nylon scarf .... firstly, I hate green and nylon is not the kind of thing one wants to wear around their neck.

The nicest, was a surprise bouquet of flowers from my youngest son about 4 years ago. It was the last thing I expected and I was home at that time recovering from spinal surgery. I did the only thing a mother could do :bawl:

A trip to Greece for my mum to see her mum and dad last year. Her dad died while she was there.

first... wow faustus... that is wonderful that you sent your mom to see her parents before your grandfather died... what a wonderful gift.

second... I am going to my Parents house with one of my Bro's to surprise her. She doesn't know we are coming down. So that should be cool.

This year I'm getting my mom a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer shirt. She loves that show quite possibly even more than I love Farscape, which is, well, pretty frightening. She saw it at the store the last time we saw each other a few weeks ago, so remembering her response I definitely have to get it for her.

I remember when I was three, I got Mother's Day confused with Christmas somehow, and gave mom a pinecone with ribbon and bells, and said "Happy Christmas Tree." I don't quite understand that myself, but mom still thinks it's funny. Thirteen years later, I'm finally getting her things she wants. :aok:

I get my mom little things as she doesnt have space. Flowers are not a gift to give her unless its for her to plant. She has a beautiful little garden in NY and in FL so I get her things for her garden like little statues or little whirrly things. She loves them. She also has a ton of hummingbirds that fly around so this year I got her a really nice glass feeder to hang on her porch. Its nice to watch them come to eat. Sometimes we have to move the feeders as the hummingbirds will fly into you. :D But she loves anything for her gardens.

Definitely flowers. Other than that, I don't know yet. My mom's a tough one to get gifts for. She's always pulling the martyr thing, thinking she doesn't deserve it, and sometimes she gets downright angry when I buy her gifts for her birthday or Mother's Day (even though it's something she wanted.) We'll see . . . I always get 'em for her, anyway and laugh when she gets mad. :lol Does that make me a bad daughter? :ewink:

For a long time my mom did that too. So I would do the ole "let me make you dinner" thing. She liked that as she loves my cooking. I will do that as well this weekend. When they came up from FL this past weekend I made a whole bunch of stuff they could freeze so they would have meals all week until they were settled enough to go out shopping and stuff. They love this. Saves them time so they can relax and they also like what I make. :D

These past several months have been really stressful for my Mom and I, especialy for my Mom, so I made reservations at a really nice hotel for her and my God-Mother (her best friend as well)to stay there this weekend. I also gave her a gift certificate at a local spa for her to use this weekend so she can spend sometime relaxing.

Great thread!!!

Well, my Mom past away two years ago... and she's buried back east near Philly, so I don't get the opportunity to visit her grave site that often. So, every year on her birthday and on Mother's Day, I buy some flowers, go to the local cemetery where I live here in California, and I walk thru there searching for stones and markers with "Mom" or "Mother" written on it, and if there are no flowers there then I'll leave one, and I continue until I'm out of flowers... then I say a prayer and leave.

Oh, crud! I'm making myself all misty-eyed now. :cry2:

I got to become a mom. My first child (my daughter) was born on Mother's Day. She will turn five on Sunday. Can't get much better than that. ;)

Truby, I think that's one of the sweetest things I've ever heard. Obviously your mom was a wonderful woman if she has such a fantastic son.

Well, you know there's the macaroni necklace - I have one that they spray painted gold, and I still get it out and wear it with my other jewelry on Mother's Day. It's an "in-joke", 'cause I'm a jeweler, and I work on Mother's Day, so it's lots of fun! Actually, I'm surprised it's still intact - probably an actual fossil by now, like me! LOL!

Awwh, Trubador - that's really thoughtful!!

My kids like to make me breakfast in bed. I think they've done it for the past 4 yrs - which means my 11 yrs old was 7 & his little brother was 3 when they started. They really make it themselves - it can be quite interesting what they think I would really like! (A lollipop, Thin mint cookies w/ my scrambled eggs :D, but it's all amazingly edible! w/ no help from Dad).

My Mom & Mother-in-law just usually get cards from us. We just can never get our act together. We were able to see them both yesterday - so that was an added bonus.

Today was terrific. My family woke up at the crack of dawn and we all walked in the "Race for the Cure," (breast cancer) with 37,000 other walkers/runners. It began with my Pittsburgh Scaper friends who suggested we walk. Scapers started it with "bra-scape." This 5k walk was another frelling fine chapter in my community. WooHoo!

I got a great Mother's Day gift this year - Season 2 of Farscape! WooHoo! That was from my wonderful hubby!

The kiddos - those little snot buckets - each gave me cards that they had made that made me cry :bawl: And the daughter had painted a small terra cotta pot and filled it with candy - so sweet!

I guess I'll keep 'em all!
