I kinda stopped posting personal stuff, as i felt awkward doing it amongst all the polital rabble, games and articles. I like reading what folks are up to and talking about what I'm doing though. How 'bout a new section entitled something like - "Getting Personal" in which we basically talk about what we are doing in our tiny little lives?
Thoughts?

sounds good to me...
what if, instead, there was a sub-forum built for political discussions. That way the most of the OT would be for discussions other than political ones :D games and articles are usually more friendly, while political discussions tend to get heated...
thoughts?

I think the political sub folder is a better idea.

Yes, some message boards have an "enter at your own risk" type of forum where stuff gets discussed, like: politics, religion, cultural issues, incendiary humor (aka Chris Rock style), mature topics, touchy threads like "Why I don't like Farscape", etc.
Some boards also use such a forum to transfer threads that start out good, but later get heated.
Some moderators banish known trolls to this type of forum only.
Or some moderators prohibit known trolls from entering in such a forum.
-----
For example, there's a hilarious thread over at another site right now called something like: "What if Osama bin Laden is really the second coming of Christ?"

I was thinking along the lines of having a forum that would ban avatars, sigs, handles and anything that would expose a poster's identity and in that way when it does get heated friends aren't lost over arguments.
I was also thinking that if arguments turn into flame wars in this new sub forum it might also be an idea to then ban that person from entering that kind of forum, and in this way it will hopefully deny them any rights to persue an argument as that sort of behaviour won't be tolerated in the regular forums.
Anyway, does anyone think that might work?

On one hand I can see the logic in this, but on the other hand....I cant see it.
Friends argue at times, some more than others. Eventually youre going to find out if a friend of yours is so passionate about a topic that they scream and yell and decide to toss the friendship because of it. Hiding in that type of forum would only postpone the inevitable.
That and there are people here who I would know just by reading what they wrote. I dont need an avatar, sigs, handle, etc. to recognize them. :D

Dratt! Foiled again. :rollin:
Yes, you're probably right LiLOrion. Perhaps this won't effect the majority of FMD'ers, but should still help to curb the casual poster if things start to get out of hand.

I don't know.... although I too see the logic in it, if anyone really wants to get that nasty in a discussion they can go somewhere else. There are plenty of boards dedicated to such discussions.
I read the political threads here, because I like finding out how other Scapers think. :) I am not braggin when I say we are a pretty bright bunch. ;) And getting various points of view from people whose opinions I value is... welll.. rare.
And I am not sure what people mean when they talk about 'attacks' in some of the political threads. I see A LOT of differing opinions, but that is pretty much it. Some sarcasm for sure, but no outright name calling. It seems that some people take someone elses differing opinion as the attack sometimes and that confuses me.
(But then, I don't have access on weekends, so maybe I missed the really nasty ones?

In a way you're absolutely right there NYPinTA in that I really enjoyed one of the politcal threads. I never thought politics could be so funny, but luckily that topic/thread (recent)
you had the two big guns battling it out, but they never went over the edge - well, not entirely. Not them two. Yes it got a bit heated but it was also quite funny. And like yourself I'm learning stuff I never quite appreciated and I think that's frelling brilliant.
But then again how will others cope with being similarly embroiled?

really? You can tell different people by the way that they write??? Interesting. I may have to start looking at that. There are a couple that I can tell off of the bat... but it is only like 2 or 3 people who I recognize by their writing.

A new game could come out of this...guess who the poster is. I bet I could trick people...

as an aside... I really don't like this fragmenting of forums... as, I personally, don't like having to go to different sections to continue discussions.

A few. And actually I shouldnt have said "write" I guess I should have said "respond". Cause there are only like 3-4 people that I can recognize by the way they write, for example - Darth Budda. :)
I dont post as much as I used to, so I read more...if that makes any sense. :)

Maybe we should try an experiment... Opposite day. They do it in Debate Clubs right? In this (deluded :lol ) plan of mine you have to argue the opposite of what you normaly would.
EX: I would argue why Metal sucks. (I kinda got a chill just typing that! :lol)
I doubt it would change anyones mind, but it might be fun. :)
If you wanna that is....

why does metal suck?
how do you suck metal?
being an inert object... I don't think that metal could possibly suck
