Well, things are a changing for our little family. My husband's being transferred to Shanghai, China. :woohoo: We'll probably be there for 2 - 3 yrs or so.

I'm really excited about this opportunity. To learn a new language & culture. We have to boys (6 & 11) that should learn an awful lot living over there!! The country is so rich in history & traditions.

I'm still planning on dropping in here - probably not as often - certainly that will be true for the next couple of months! And I'm going to Burbank - come Hell or high water!!!!!

That's why the questions on electronics, etc. We still need info on the feasibility of using a power converter supply for our american electronics or would we be better off, just buying over there & not messing with a converter. We sure would appreciate any insight you might have to offer!!

I just had to share this with my scaper family!! You guys have always been so helpful & caring and I really wanted you to know.

I'm guessing that the information police are sensitive about hard drives, diskettes, tapes crossing into or out-of the country:

Information on computer hard drives might get accessed and searched.

One of my friends decided to avoid the situation by not bringing any computers in, and not taking undeveloped film out.

For what's portrayed as Chinese food here in the USA . . . Oh well, you'll find out soon enough . . . :rollin: (just teasing)

Congrats!

I don't have any direct experience of China, but I do know that it really isn't worth taking North American appliances overseas. Not even curling irons. Power supplies are so different that even with a converter you can't expect things to work well. Besides the size of the converter needed to run a washing machine will be approximately the size of 28" TV. (According to my husband anyway.)

Reliability can also be an issue with power and adding a converter into the system will just compound your problems.

Best just to make sure that you acquire top of the line equipment once you are over there. And that you pay your power bills on time. Amazing how badly equipment works when the power has been cut off!

Ni hao?

All the best to you in China! And for the chinese food: it helps if you're not a vegetarian ;)

China rocks. And by the way, eta_carinae, so does Sango. :aok: (at least, I think that's Sango in your avatar.)

a note about chinese food. be open minded and don't base your expectations or standards of good food on what you eat here in America. the problem many Americans have is that everything revolves around them and if the kung pao chicken doesn't look like it does in the US, then it must be the CHINESE who are wrong. by the way, you probably won't find kung pao chicken in China. it's not neccesarily a chinese dish. it's more of an american ripoff of something that already existed.

and try everything, i encourage you. try bok choi if you haven't. it's a great vegetable. try it in soup. it's wonderous. don't look for a nice juicy burger cause ...well there most likely aren't any.

I like bok choy!! It's good. Yes, I'm planning on being very experimental about things. I figured our "chinese" food was about as chinese as "french" fries are french!!

Nicola - thanks for the advice on the converters - I REALLY appreciated that experience there.

Thanks, Tokyoscaper - I've bookmarked that sight!! That's wonderful!! Full of fantastic information. Thank you!!

Yes, we're really excited - just have to get through a lot of corporate red tape. We should know more exacting details in a week or so.

This is a dream of lifetime for us. I don't think I'll believe it until we're there!! The experiences, I know will be unimaginable. I'm just very grateful for the times we do live in. To have the electronic connections will make this transition so much easier than even 20 yrs ago.

Thanks for all your support, enthusiasm, words of wisdom & encouragement. We appreciate it!!
