I caught a lot of people by knowing what the person likes.
For instance, a couple of my friends love romance, so I showed them the "Look at the Princess" Trilogy. Hooked like a fish.
For my friends who like horror, I showed them "Eat Me". The interesting reaction from people who've never seen Farscape: Each person tells me that the creepiest scene is the one where the two Johns are playing rock-paper-scissors, the v.o. is talking, then the scene freezes and the episode ends.
For action, I give them "Nerve" and "Hidden Memory". This gives them a good basis for the rest of the series and they always want to find out how Aeryn got injured.
For people who love comedy, "Crackers Don't Matter". It gives a good insight to the charactors as they slowly go crazy.
Finally, for the people who like Hitchcock-style fims, I went with "Human Condition"
Get the idea? Think like an advertiser. Know your audience and cater to them.
Save eps like "Out of Their Minds", or "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc. for later. They are eps to be used as an ace for later. ("You thoght THAT ep was good, wait until you see THIS one....")
I've been doing this now since the announcement of the cancellation of the show. I've done a LOT of recruiting in the Connecticut/Western Mass area, and I've gotten a lot of success from it. :-)
Good luck.

yeah that's what I would say as well. Premier and A Human Reaction are really great for introducing new ppl to Farscape

I scaped my friend with Liars, Guns, and Money, because he's so into action and once he watched, he wanted to go back and see the episodes where the hired hands that be were introduced.

I show them whatever I can. I don't have the dvd's yet. I showed one guy the final four episodes and he loved them. Now he wants to know what led up to this point. I showed him Premiere first so how odd is that? Now whenever it's on he watches it.

If they are likely to be Scaped by shippy then The Flax. If action is their thing then LGM.

Great idea...a FS demo reel! Definitely start with the Premiere; always best to start at the beginning. And it's a frelling strong ep on its own anyway. After that, I vote for Nerve and Hidden Memory. And if they're not hooked by that point, well, they're probably brain-dead.

I like to think that if they ever decide to attempt a farscape movie, and reboot of the story that these six eps would be the frame work of a single screenplay

To fully display all that is great about farscape I would say show them Won't get Fooled again. Although it takes a little set up of the back story (nerve and hidden memory), it showes the amazing amount of creativity the writers.
What's beter than Chriton going completly bonkers!!!
or just show premier...

I think Meltdown, Won't Get Fooled Again, Scratch and Sniff, and John Quixote really show the true nature of Farscape, though they might not be the best ways to get people hooked. ;)
The Look at the Princess and Liars, Guns, and Money trilogies are probably your best bets. Human Reaction and PK Tech Girl would be two more suggestions.

Thanks for starting this thread, leeturnbull. I've been wanting to ask this question as I have a hellofa lot of friends who need some force feeding of Farscape (they have a pre-disposition to disliking it as they know it is my Saturday night), so I'll be using these eps to hopefully make them understand just what it is I'm on about!

I have a group of eps that I regularly lend to non Scapers. They are from season 1 and include
Premiere
PK Tech Girl
Till The Blood Runs Clear
Durka Returns
A Human Reaction
A Bugs Life
Nerve
Hidden Memory
I give them the list of the eps to watch, but as a couple of the above are on DVDs with other eps I usually find that they watch those too, as well as the commentaries.
After the first couple of eps I ask them about Farscape and I generally get positive responses and a request of where they can get other episodes. I will also lend
Look at the Princess trilogy and
Out of their Minds
After that, they are on their own to get more of Farscape. I find that by then the habit is well formed :lol and they buy the entire first season set. And the rest is history.
The rationale for the above is Premiere is where it all began. PK Tech girl introduces Gilina who is important in the Nerve/Hidden Memory ep and also shows the growing relationship with Aeryn
Till The Blood Runs Clear is a combo ep with the John / D'Argo relationship forming, Crais' pursuit, Furlow's role in wormholes etc.
Human Reaction is of course the Ancients and wormholes and John's knowledge of such things.
Durka Returns is Chiana
Bugs life is a must see as that is where John starts to really become a take charge guy and it's where Aeryn is nearly killed.
I left off They've got a secret which is also an important ep as it leads to other things like Crais and Talyn - later.

I'm in need of some advice. I'm thinking of sending a few eps in the direction of my sociology tutor. She constantly tells the class she loves TV shows that force you to think, and don't just spoon feed people. So, I was thinking:
Premiere
PK Tech Girl
The Flax
A Constellation of Doubt
I thought ACoD would be appropriate for a sociolgist because it is such an interesting concept (the whole reflection of ourselves through aliens etc). Otherwise, good list? Better ideas?
One of the biggest issues I have with first showing eps to people is not giving away too many good plotlines in case they become hooked (which I like to imagine is going to happen!). Is this just my paranoia seeping through or do other people have this issue too?

I completely agree with you on CoD!!! Maybe, considering your teacher's career, JC would be good too, and if she likes shows that get you to think I would also say The Choice (I know, I know I love CB's character, but the inside of that particulary ep and the emotions CB's playing are frelling interesting, not to mention heartbreaking) the same for Relativity and TWWW cause both of them show the way peacekeepers behave or should behave.

anything form season 1 or 2 would be good. but when we get to season 3 you'd need a lot of backstory to be told so just keep it simple.

It does depend on the person but I recomend:
Primere (For average people looking for a show)
A Human reaction (For Psychiatrists and Socialologists)
Look At The Princess (Romance/Adventure)
Taking The Stone (Teens/Extreme sports)
Skratch And Sniff (for those indy movie buffs)
John Quixote (for movie and gamer buffs)
I. E.T. (for classic sci fi buffs)
PK Tech Girl (for those who like dark cinima)
Exodus From Genesis (for those who like B movies)

I have forewarned my dad that I will be attempting to Scape him this coming weekend :D He *did* know the name of the show already, and knew it was on Sci-Fi. I think I'm going with Premiere and A Human Reaction...I don't think I'll get more than two eps in. And I think I already sold him on Netflix when I talked to him on the phone last night -- he thinks his wife will love it, and if I can get him somewhat interested in Farscape, then he can make good use of it as well!

I'd use a few first season eps
Premiere
PK Tech Girl
Durka Returns
Nerve
Hidden Memory
That really lays out the plot for the next two or seasons. Then after that Look at the Princes. I can only think of maybe 20 movies that are better than that trilogy (and I have seen over 10,000 movies).

I just brought up my season 1 dvds to my friend and left them with him saying "here. watch this, you won't be disappointed". And he wasn't :) Exodus from Genesis was the first episode he raved about interestingly enough (was ep 5 on my dvds), he couldn't get over the bit at the end when John and Aeryn are staring into space from the open platform watching the spores drift out like golden starburst, he said it was so beautiful (anything that can inspire that kind of reaction in a guy has to be good :) ). It was after watching the full season that he used the word "ADDICTED". I think you have to watch the full season to really appreciate how much of an epic it was as you do with season 3. Season 2 is fine for the standalone eps but some people may be put off my its weirdness if they haven't been broken in. "look at the princess" trilogy is usually popular.

If you're talking only S1, I'd go with these too, but I'd have to squeeze in DNA Mad Scientist also. They all lay a good foundation.

I always liked Crackers Don't Matter but chances are people need to see more of the series to think that ep is funny. Otherwise it might just be weird or worse. It's hard for me to come up with a "funny" one especially for a first ep because I think what makes FS funny is "frell, what now?" events and the crew going farbot. One of my favorite episodes is Out of Their Minds... but part of what makes it fun is watching the actors play other characters. Would first timers see/get that?
Here is a list that scifinutter was kind enough to give me. Apparently list or ep choices always change depending upon who is getting scaped. It's true... you know your friend better than we do. :dunno:
Action: WSS, LGM, ITLD
Humour: CDM, JQ, OOTM
Horror: Eat Me, DNA Mad Scientist
Romance: LATP, Meltdown, The Flax, Green Eyed Monster
Story: AHR, Different Destinations, ACOD
Angst: TWWW, DMD, DWTB, The Choice
Mystery: They've Got A Secret, Durka Returns, A Prefect Murder
That's only very general, and I constantly change my mind on which eps I use, but I hope that helps!
I think for my scaping party I am showing:
> Premiere
> Human Reaction
> Nerve
> Hidden Memory
and as time and/or interest allows:
Locket or Flax (romance); Eat Me (canabals like FF: Reavers); Bringing Home the Beacon (scarrans vs. pk)
I'll actually have to come up with a few more because this Firefly group likes to hangout until the wee hours of the morning. It's possible it could be an all day/late night Scapefest.
