I finally saw EP 102 tonight and I must say that what I have read is correct. It is a less than satisfactory episode. Aside from any poor story issues there is the one underlying issue: Language.

Normally thats not a big deal due to the microbes, but while Moya's crew can understand the natives of this world, the natives should not be able to understand them. Unless they are REALLY quick studies, lol.

Yep, thats true... But I, ET is the second episode of the series.. When I saw it, I didnt understand those things, why should I pay attention to failures or other not-so-story important things.
I, ET is ok, if you dont try to find it bad... In every series there are good, and not so good episodes.
You dont notice bad eps in the first time you watch the show, if you are hooked...
Second time you may notice some of the episodes boring...
Third time you skip those episodes...
Fourth time, I dont know.. I havent watched it four times...

LOL... I'm on what it somewhere in the 2.5 times through the series range and have begun identifying the not so hot episodes. They are usually the episodes that don't have much to contribute to the overall story arc.

i assume they have translator microbes. in the premiere rygel was shocked that john had not been injected at birth. it seem common place that he would have translator microbes. Even in Jeremiah Crichton the natives understood john and all the others even though they had been stranded on that planet for many many years. they had microbes. in i,et the planet did not have had any contact with alien life but its possible they could still have translator microbes to communicate with each other. It was very much like earth, it is possible that not everybody (just like here) speaks the same language.
a different question about the same episode:
towards the end, after john knocks out the guards to free d'argo, john asks the kid if he would like to shake d'argo's hand. the kid agrees and d'argo shakes his hand. both d'argo and the kid seem to know what was going on, and even do it again before d'argo leaves. however, in 'til the blood runs clear' john and d'argo have a moment where john has to explain a handshake to him. why did he do that? or is it that i'm remember the episode wrong.
thanks

Yeah, I was thinking of that too, about the handshake thing, I had forgotten that later John explains to D'Argo what a handshake is.

It is possible that they have translator microbes on the planet and use it to get over internal language barriers. I think I'll use that in the rewrite I am doing.

Good thinkin :D

I tend to think that in TTBRC that D'Argo is already fully aware of what a handshake is.

John merely explains to D'Argo the relevance of the hanshake in respect to his home world.
