Just saw this episode again when it aired last sunday/monday at 1am & watched it with the sound really low & closed captioning on so my hubby could get some rest... anyway, it's probably been mentioned before but I noticed that Namtar is actually Rat man spelled backwards & he kind of turns into a little ratman at the end.... coincedence?

Don't know for sure, but it seemed quite Budong-ish...

The ratman part is good, but so is the mythological connection:
Namtar: A minor god of the underworld in Sumerian mythology, Namtar was regarded as the bringer of disease and pestilence. It is fate, destiny in its evil aspect, pictured as a demon of the underworld. In addition to spreading disease, Namtar acted as the herald or messenger and chief minister of Ereshkigal, the queen of the Sumerian underworld, and the god Nergal. Nergal in his guise as the god Irra, and Namtar were believed to cause all diseases in mortals.

Yeah, I remarked on that a couple of weeks ago. A couple of folks said they'd noticed it too. I thought it was pretty cute. If there's any Muppet Show fans out there, you'll notice that little Namtar looks a lot like Rizzo Rat.

RATMAN. That's good stuff. One of the stranger episodes. Byt enjoyable nonetheless.

Oh no! *Scrubs out eyes*
Do love the episode though and Namtar (who I will now affectionately call Patrick) gives me the creeps. I love that it shows the darkness of our "heroes." Chopping off pilot's arm is one of the most horrific things done on FS and I was always rather scared of Zhaan afterwards.
Oh yeah, my inner shipper just loves the J/A in this ep.

I'm getting my sister turned on 'Scape and she completely fell in love with this episode. Now she wants more, more, more. She loves the complexities between the characters and this episode really brings that out. Zhaan, D'argo and Rygel being completely unaware of anything that Aeryn and John were really up to, being so self-obsessed with their chances to return home.
I think this episode gave the series direction into which ways it should travel.

Do not get me wrong I love the episode, it was just strange. I liked the fact that Aeryn was starting to show a softer side. She pretends that she does not care about belonging but you see she does.

SCAPERMOMMY,
FARSCAPE™: “DNA MAD SCIENTIST” is my favourite Season 1 episode, bar none.
I have not yet finished viewing Seasons 3 & 4, so I cannot say for certain that it’s my favourite episode of the entire series, but it’s definitely the programme that let me know that the characters were not bound by any “Prime Directive” other than saving their own skins.
Regrettably, however, I was not able to trust ZHAAN completely after that episode….
Did Namtar remind anyone else of Patrick Stewart?
Can't say that I see the resemblance.
I like this episode a lot. I think that it was definitely the first one where I thought how nice it would be to get Aeryn and John together.

Hmmm, well I think of it this way. It was after "That old black magic" and before "Rhapsody in Blue", so technically it was "evil Zhaan" doing it :)

TALYNLIVES,
I have trouble identifying episode titles prior to Season 3, so could you refresh my memory of FARSCAPE™: “THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC” & “RHAPSODY IN BLUE”, please?

Hi Malcom - That Old Black Magic is the episode in S1 in which Maldis, the wizard appears and John takes on a fight with Crais as sort of a hologram,John dislocates his shoulder, we learn of Crais' background , Zhaan learns to cause pain again and there is multiheaded bird that aliens eat. Oh yes and Rygel tries to steal John's boots and gets kissed for it.
Rhapsody in Blue is the "Delvians are mad episode" where Zhaan has unity with John and her eyes go all red. John has a wife in that one - altered memories etc. We are on a planet with many insane Delvians.
Does that help?

In that old black magic, Zhaan has to tap into the dark impulses that she had long buried in order to save Crichton from Moldis. In "Rhapsody in Blue" she has all remaining control seized from her, but at the end John unites with her and she manages to restore balance. In between she had just partial control over her dark impulses.

CANADADOC,
Acknowledged, thanks for the intel!
I don’t recall noticing that the Delvians were “insane”, but I did very much enjoy seeing ZHAAN’S eyes turn blood-red, as it put me in mind of some of my favourite scenes with MR. CHRISTOPHER LEE as COUNT DRACULA in HAMMER HORROR™ films.

I could not help thinking @ the time what a marvellous lover ZHAAN would have made during that period of her life….;)

this is the episode where Pilot became my fav. character. For awhile, i hated most of crew members, except Aeryn and John. My feelings went from Pity for Pilot, to fangirlish. Yay for episodes like these!

DNA Mad Scientist is one of my favorite Farscape episodes......and one of the all time best sci-fi episodes period.

I love this episode for the fact that you're beginning to see Aeryn as a three dimensional character. You know it bothers her that she doesn't have a home world to go back to like the others. She finally breaks down and goes to Namtar hoping there is a place for her out there because she does want to belong. You also get a glimpse of how scared she is of being alone. I also like that this early on Crichton is showing that he starting to care about her. He didn't hesitate to tell her he would take her back to Earth with him if he ever found a way home. True to his word, he mentions that he'd never leave her behind in ITLG. :)

This is a great episode. It's the first episode I always recommend to sci-fi fans who are kinda burnt out on the genre. I tell them it's the anti-Star Trek. Then I tell them about when they got the distress signal in Bone to be Wild, and John kinda snickers and says "How stupid is that!". Definitely a break from the norm. That lures them right in. Next thing you know, they're selling their soul for the next fix. :hypno:
