Rock Legends:
Reunited Black Sabath, Reunited Judas Priest, Slayer, Black Label Society
Bad ass young bands:
Lamb of God, God Forbid, UnEarth, Otep, Bleeding Through, Superjoint Ritual (Phil rules!), Lacuna Coil, and Slipknot (used to hate them, but they are growing on me for some reason, maybe because Vol 3 is actually good).
As a 22 year old metalhead, I've never really had a chance to see Ozzy live, even if he is an embarissing shadow of his former self.
Too bad the closest Ozzfest is in Dallas, so me and my boys gotta drive four hours.
We just get crap like the Warped Tour and Linkin Park with Snoop Dogg in H-Town, yay!
Damnit Mushroomhead or Opeth need to come back and play the Engine Room again!

Hey, do you listen to any HardCore Punk?
The Dillinger Escape Plan
From Autum to Ashes
BioHazard
As I Lay Dying (more hardcore metal)
Bleeding Through (MetalCore)
And Agent,
If you think Linkin Park is metal, you might want to avoid Ozzfest.
If you want a band that mixes real metal, hip/hop, and Industrial, checkout Mushroomhead, my favorite band of all time.

hahaha i know linkin park isn't metal. i know it isn't and it never claimed to be. i just like the music.
but my friend's a serious metal fan and he is a huge ozzy fan. i was thinking of getting him tickets for the summer...and get this, he's only 16! the kid has every black sabbath album and i think he's going to start collecting the vinyls. as for me, i appreciate metal in most, if not all of it's forms.

Showing my age here, but I saw Ozzy in concert 4 days before Randy Rhodes died! It was a pretty rockin show, "diary of a Madman / crazy train" time. What I remember of it, he hung a midget, and there were lots of upside down crosses.

Cool, thanks bro. I've heard good things about Stamping Ground from the UK. They supposidly invented the Wall of Death.

Not yet, but my tastes are getting harder, and any recomendations are greatly appreciated.
Damnit, now I want to see Slipknot live and I missed it a few weeks ago. Why did they decide to release a good album a week after they visited H-Town?

Didn't they break up? I remember seeing their one and only video on MTV2 and then went out and bought the disc. I thought the VJ said they had broken up after the album with the video. That video was kind of creepy the bunny suits. Reminded me of Donnie Darko.

no, Refused are not F*cking dead... even though one of their better albums is titled that. They are still around... all their albums are being re-mastered and re-released. They supposedly have a new album coming out soon.

Cool! Another Dillinger Escape Plan-fan! :) My favorite album is "Irony is a Dead Scene" ... but then again, I am a sucker for Mike Patton, I love Fantomas! ... and Faith No More of course...
I saw Black Sabbath on their first Reunion-tour, a couple of years back... that was cool... There was a day on Roskilde-festival's main stage that started off with Soulfly (okay, so I was never a big fan, but it's Max Cavalera...) after that, Slayer and late at night: Black Sabbath... that was brilliant! :D
If you want to listen to some grind, you should start by checking out Napalm Death - "Scum" -that's the original grind-album, apart from that, Brutal Truth (anything), Soilent Green (kinda grind, cool band anywho...) and, well... A.C. they're very grind, but their lyrics are some time a bit too much; they hate everything, which means they have some quite racist and anti-semit songs every once in a while... they do have some funny ones inthere too, though, like "Living Colour is my favorite blackmetal band" and "When I think of punk bands I think of bands like Nirvana and The Melvins" ...and their version of "Staying Alive" is priceless...

I really want to go for my first time this year if it's in some way possible. The line-up is Godly. I love Lacuna Coil too, moreso than any of the others, but all of the others are very impressive.
Linkin Park is a great band to me too, AS, but then I said that enough in the thread for them no doubt.

Actually I believe Linkin Park goes under the NU-Metal genre, just as Limp Bizkit and Korn does.

i don't know, i tend to not want to put them under a genre ..."rock" emcompasses it well i think.

Yes, but it dosen't qualify as real metal, like Pantera, Opeth, and the like.

I partly agree... When NU-Metal first came out, with Korn and Deftones and the likes, it was pretty metal. But as soon as Limp Bizkit and Fred Durst came into it, everything was ruined...

Deftones is Nu-metal? I would have to argue that. Have you seen them in concert? They are not like the other bands that you mentioned.
Martincore
06-07-2004, 07:28 AM
Well, no... not anymore, but when they started out, they were pretty much the same style as Korn... and yes I have seen them live, I don't see how that changes anything, though....

06-07-2004, 07:43 AM
They didn't have a mixer or shit like that... like Limp does... and their bass player actually knows how to play bass... and the singer is better than korns and durst is. I don't like any of that nu-metal crap... but I have every Deftones album. Around the fur is an awsome album.

I agree, Deftones is a great band, but if you listen to the first Korn-album, and compare it to Deftones' "Adrenaline", I don't see how we can disagree that those two albums are basically in the same style...

First albums are typically not what the bands are going to be. Look at Metallica's first album... or Megadeths... or Slayer... shoot any band.

I like some Nu-Metal.
Mushroomhead, my favorite band of all time, could be considered Nu-Metal, I'm not sure what its classified as since its a mix of metal, rap, and industrial.
Slipknot, I think they classify as Nu-Metal, and they started as a hardcore band.
Mudvayne, 40 Below Summer, Twisted Method, Flaw, Saliva
and grinner will probably kill me for this:
Disturbed

Ozzfest hasn't been worth the price of admission since 97. On that bill you had:
Powerman 5000
Type O Negative
Fear Factory
Pantera
The original reunion of Black Sabbath
I'd pay to see that again!

right, well... Kill 'em All was thrash, just like Ride the Lightning and and large parts of Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All and the black album.
Killing is my bussiness... I've actually never heard, but Peace Sells... and So Far, So Good... was thrash/speed, which Megadeth continued to be for a very long time.
Slayer... well, they just got harder and harder for each album, like Pantera, so you can't compare them to the other bands, really.
Anyway, Im not disputing that bands change, and I'm not saying that Deftones is still a Nu-metalband, I'm just saying that their first album was Nu-metal, and a damned good one... (of course, back then we hadn't invented the genre "Nu-metal", so it was called "cross-over"). Today Deftones are more along the lines of "Art-metal" (god I hate that word), which is quite impressive, seeing that they've only made 4 albums, and have still changed so much. I mean, a band like Megadeth made something along the lines of 7 albums, before they changed anything for real...

what I mean by first albums is that they typically are more raw than the later ablums. If you look at Metallica, their first album didn't follow any pattern, while Ride, Master, and Justice all had a flow to the way the album went. The first song is a monster fast one... then it flows to a slower song, then faster... the the 'ballad' then the second half of the album follows a modified format where there is a instumental and then a blindingly fast song at the end. Kill 'Em All did not follow that format... and once Metallica fired Flemming Rasmussen and went with Bob Rock... they changed again and now suck.

oh... I see what you're doing...
Well, the thing we started off discussing was wether or not Deftones' first album was Nu-metal/cross-over, and was similar in style to Korn's first album. I claim it is, what do you think?

06-07-2004, 12:32 PM
I honestly think that the first Deftones album had a bit too much Madonna/producer influence on it. I think that for the second and later albums, they were given more freedom to do what they wanted to do. I don't think of them as nu-metal at all... just a really good rock band.

I’ve studied Metallica’s music for years and I agree with you except on the point that Kill'em All didn't follow a pattern -- actually it does. However with all of the songs being so heavy with no slower or low-key songs to break the monotony it can be missed. It’s a see-saw pattern that floats between rip-roaring speed induced insanity and fist-pounding riff oriented metal melodies.
But I think you and I can agree on the last point – after Black album Metallica became spoiled little rich bitches and corporate lackeys -- or as they are more affectionately called “posers”

no, I understand that Kill 'Em All has a pattern. What I was attempting to say was that it wasn't as visible as the later albums were. Kill 'Em All is a very raw album... which is what Metallica was at the time... raw kids.
