A Multi User Dungeon? I thought those were all shut down by the Universities that used to run them.

They are more now than ever, with dsl and such being everywhere. Most just died off from lack of use, a few of the bigger ones including the one i played at hosted by Stanford are still alive and kicking... =D

Sounds interesting. What's involved? Are you thinking a Farscape themed on-line RPG type of environment? i've done a lot of computer gaming (RPG and strategy mainly, with a few space sims), but it has been all single player. My on-line experience has been chiefly web surfing and participation in on-line boards line FMD, so I am not too sure what is involved with a persistant multi-user dungeon other than in theory.

I wanna play too. I did some mudding back in the mid 90s, but it was pretty cumbersome back then, plus some of the players had little tolerance for "stupid newbies". I'll keep an eye on this thread.

MUDs are really the only online place where you can get some good RP going.
I'm not sure what your talking about, but i'm game.
Are they similar to things likes this......http://sebaceanhiro.proboards23.com/ ?

probably not. It is text based role-playing games typically in the D&D genre, but there were quite a few Star Wars and Star Trek based games as well. It flowed just like a D&D module... you adventured thru the game.
Eamon Games used to be big on Text-Based RPG in the 80's Apple computers. Xork was another

So base the engine off the Farscape RPG?

Wow, I come in here and before I know it someone has a link to the RPG I'm 90% complete in making. Anyway... (do join that... when I finish it...)
I want to join this. I'll help in whatever way I can.

I could never get behind RPG message boards. It just doesn't work in my head.

Apart from Jeff's game, there's the Keepers of the Peace RPG (http://farscaperpg.proboards24.com) as well. This one's running right now - I'm the main GM there, actually! This one's a first-person RPG - I think Jeff's is third-person.
I'm glad you've given a progress report on your game, Jeff - I've passed through the site a few times, but wasn't sure what was going on. I thought it hald folded a few times, since there wasn't a time-to-go notice of any kind.

Nah, not folded. I've just been extremely preoccupied. Actually the only thing left for me to do on it is come up with names for the made-up locations in Tormented Space, and then I'll be commencing advertising phase. :D

MUD's don't usually work that way. Typically MUDding is going solo thru a premanufactured setting, gaining XP and Gold/items. Looking for bugs in the program in order to power up your characters (also known as CHEATING... something that the Stanford based MUDS would BAN entire colleges for 1 offense if discovered) Think of it as a giant Chatroom/adventure module. You can play with others or go solo. Or just meet someone and 'chat' with them in one of the 'rooms'.
But you don't play characters and form parties like in a traditional RPG. The better muds had/have hundreds to thousands of different threads written into the MUD's over the years to explore thru. They are text based and date back to the early to mid 60's. The MIT MUD is one of the oldest MUD's around. There are a couple MUSH's that are old also.

Oh please...like I don't waste enuff time here already? Oops, did I say that? No! No! Not wasted! Essential to my mental well-being! But work-at-home freelancers like myself already have WAy WAY too many temptations and ways to procrastinate and not do work. All I need now is another dimension to lose myself in. Keep me posted and let me know how much fun it is, but under NO circumstances let me in!

Well you can form groups and some MUDs are made up of guilds. Like the Wheel Of Time Muds are generally guild based, people joining various factions. The Discworld MUD is very guild based. But there are people how like to solo more than group. And a very fast way to cheat is have a friend with a high level character who will take you out for power leveling.

that technically isn't cheating... the ones that get you banned are where you discover a bug that would set a treasure/monster in the same place so you keep on getting the same points. In one MUD that I played, there was a room where if you killed a snake and left the room, it would reappear. This was a test made by the runners of the game. If you continuously would attack the snake, they would warn you about cheating. It was a temptation ploy. If you continued, a SUPERIOR being would enter and destroy your character. It was fun. :D

Right now i'm tinkering with a setup using MudOS as the Driver and some lib called Merthrana, but basically there are a lot of ways one can go. You can do everything in LPC, which means everything to create it is hardcoded in LPC. Or you can use other ones that make it so there are 'builders' who just do descriptions and such.
Anyone who is interested should e-mail me at epx998@gmail.com and we'll go from there.

Great idea, ive been wanting to develop a mud for years.
They are still operational. I have developed a mud code base in VISUAL BASIC. I have never heard of that being done, most muds are built in C which is almost impossible to use unless you are a hardcore C nerd. VB is more user friendly and easy to get the bugs out of.
The base i made is ready to go, it only needs someone to design the world and the battle system and everything else. If anyone has any cool ideas email me at johnnystarr@gmail.com, or if you want the code base to make your own mud i will send it to you, i just ask that when you get your mud up and running you post that it is based on the (starrmud) server code base.
