View Full Version : 4.5 - I'm SCARED!

Guys, I have a confession to make. I discovered Farscape purely on DVDs, and have yet to see how it "ends." Though, I did make a point of turning to SciFi for just 1 minute during the "series finale" so that I can say I did see the last episode.
But, what I'm scared of, now, is seeing the last of the normal sets of episodes. When I bought it at Best Buy yesterday, I paused. Normally, I grab it, look around me with fiendish eyes ready to fight off any would-be assailants as if I was a lion pulling off the parts of a zebra, unwilling to share; but, this time I didn't do that.
I simply held it in my hand, studied it, and cherished my potentially last time purchasing a Farscape DVD (I know the mini-series will eventually come out, but it won't be the same, having already seen the mini-series by the time it comes out). I did the DVD-shuffle, which involves shaking the case a little to make sure that the disc isn't loose, so that when I got home and had a beer, pizza, and my wife ready to watch I wasn't disappointed by a scratched disc, and went to the counter.
I couldn't bring myself to watch it last night! It sat, in its packaging waiting, just WAITING to be consumed. I can't do it!!! Something just won't let me do it! HELP!!!!!

Oh but americanpoet, they are a good set of episodes! Hang in there! As they say, all good things come to an end (and sometimes come back for a miniseries) -- doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy the ride the whole darn way.
Plus, Farscape is infintely re-watchable.
And who knows, perhaps one day we will be able to erase the show from your brain and then you can watch it all over again, for the first time ;)
BTW, it is always great to hear from people who got into the show from the DVDs! Did you start watching after the cancellation?

I remember the same feeling when I watched the last episode on Sci-Fi. Usually, I ran to the set just before it started, sat and watched the commercials in eager anticipation, and reveled in the glory that is Farscape.
But when the last ep aired, I had this cloud of dread hanging over my head. We knew at that point that it wasn't coming back, and a part of me wanted to tape it and never watch it, so it wouldn't end. When it was over, however, yes I was heartsick that there was no more, but what a ride! 4 amazing eps.
At least you have the advantage of knowing that it isn't really the end. The last 4 episodes are monumental. In my book, the We're so Screwed Trilogy is the best that Farscape has to offer. I even named myself after Part 3, because it is my favorite episode.
Go ahead, take the plunge. Space it out over 4 nights, if you want to, or even 4 weeks! But watch it, and then join the excitement of the countdown to the mini!

I am another who only started watching post-cancellation (just a few months ago, really) and have experienced Farscape solely on DVD. I started by Netflixing the show and then bought all of the DVDs in a frenzy...I got so immersed that I watched the whole series in about a month. Even though I knew a little about what happened in the finale because I had online friends who were Scapers, it was still very emotional when I got to that last set! I had to buy the R2 releases of the last two volumes because those sets weren't out here when I got to that point in my watching, and I just could not wait.
Heh, but my reaction was a bit different than yours, amrcanpoet -- I got the last two volumes from the UK and watched both (eight eps? nine?) in one night. Pure insanity. But I'd do it again :D What a fabulous and heartbreaking ride.
And I can *totally* attest to Eve11's "infinitely rewatchable" comment! I'm planning to watch the whole series a third time before the mini airs :loco:

I'm pretty much a DVD scaper myself. I saw a few of the episodes when they aired on TV but filled in all the gaps by renting the DVD's from Netflix. Also know a couple people at work now that have the DVD's. Will be buying them myself soon. I will be watching the whole thing over again at least once before the mini because I finally got my GF to agree to watch them. Hoping to get her started tonight.

I've watched the all of the eps many, many times. I did find myself a bit melancholy that this was my last DVD to purchase. At first I was eager to get them all. Now, with no more to purchase, it was kinda sad.
HOWEVER...we have a lovely Miniseries to look forward to and if we can get those ratings, a continued spin off. SO, more to follow. Think positive, amrcanpoet. This is the little show that COULD!

we were lucky here in the uk as we have had the boxed sets out for months and months. But i do remember thinking the same way, i could up by watching season 3 litterally one by one for days and went on the internet to see when the next dvds were due out or how the season 5 was going and shock! horror! I dont believe it! its been cancelled. So watching Bad Timing for the first time knowing at the time there would be no more Farscape, was awful it was like a death or a relative or a relationship break up!!!
I remember thinking also, must keep this episode and not watch it because then it will not be the end!
And watching it knowing it was the last was horrible, i remember thinking why didnt they just cut out the last few mins, but hey now we know why, i suppose the campaign would not have been as strong knowing it had a happy fairytail ending.
We now have our mini to look forward too!
and heres hoping that we get millions of new viewers and they get to make a spin off or continue on with series 5,6,7,8,9...... and some movies.

we've got to keep our chins up and enjoy our DVDs then the mini. We are going to make the mini successful so we will HAVE MORE FARSCAPE! We did the almost impossible so the naysayers said anyway with the campaign and got the mini. I will miss the trip to the Best Buy myself.
I tried to scape people in the Sci fi section. I got someone the other day who said they would watch the mini. They had never heard of Farscape but they like sci-fi stuff. He was talking about a movie he wanted to watch and then I scaped him after I listened to his talk about his movie Predator vs Alien.
Please watch the last DVD. It is so good so far. I just got it last night. I heard the extras are good too as well as the episodes. After the mini comes out we can all buy the DVD as well. So maybe they will use the success of the sales and not just the nielsen as a gage for making more Farscape.

It's been more or less a year since Contender released DVD box 4.5 here in the UK - I would agree with others here - Bad Timing is a difficult episode to watch - but you should, there is good stuff in there. And of course the other episodes, like La Bomba are reallly good - some of the best from season 4.
In the Contender 4.5 - there's an extra called "Farwell" - which I consider to be required viewing for all scapers. I'm curious to know what extras ADV have put into 4.5 - is Farwell there?

If Farscape is about anything, it's about change. How it's characters change and learn about loyalty, and trust, and love. How it's universe changed when a certain astronaut blundered into a wormhole and set in motion events which shook their end of the galaxy. How it's changed US, from standard sci-fi fans and part of the regular viewing public, to an organized and dynamic force.
We've done the next-to-impossible. We've brought back a show given up for dead by it's parent network, in record time. No matter how this mini turns out, we've still beaten the odds. We are John Crichtons, all of us. Forced by events beyond our control to fight an apparent lost cause, but in the end triumphant.
Set aside your fears and trepidations. Put your faith in the creative dynamo that is Farscape. Take the journey, with us. You just may never be the same.

I know, I know I had the same feeling. I saw BT when it originally aired (the screaming in my house at the end must have been audible to all the neighbors) but I still find myself mildy sad that I just bought the last FS series DVD. But then I think of the mini and feel happy!
I can sympathize about the FS binge. I started watching FS at the end of S4 (a friend finally managed to convince me to give it a chance) so I caught all the other seasons on DVD. I went mad and would watch 5-6 episodes a day...but then I burned them all out before the end of S3 DVDs came out and it was torture waiting for the next ones.

I also discovered Farscape through the DVDs. It was only after I started collecting the seasons that I discovered the show's "temporary" fate (always the optimist).
I do have a question about the DVD sales. Does anyone out there know how to find how well the DVDs sold? There is at least one case of a show being brought back by the strength of it's DVD sales (Family Guy will return on Fox in 2005).
I have this weird theory about shows with heavy continuous story lines doing better after the DVD seasons are released (not that Family Guy qualifies, but the humor of Stewy is priceless).

I cried when I saw the last ep on TV ... and I felt so hollow - like I had lost all of my best friends at once.
I too saw many eps on DVD for the first time as skiffy were never reliable enough to show the whole series uninterrupted from the beginning.
4.5 has a number of farewell to Farscape extras on it and I'm not sure if I can watch the last day on the set ... I've already heard from a number of the stars how they felt on that day and how hard it was to film their scenes - which incidentally were not in Bad Timing. The last scenes filmed were from an earlier episode. I can only imagine how the stars and the crew felt as they watched and saw the sets dismantled. That for me, will be the hardest to watch. To me, the destruction of the sets was the destruction of Moya who was very real - through Pilot.

They have farwell footage on 4.5? I haven't gotten it yet... That'll be bittersweet to watch, since we know now that the last episode of season 4 isn't really the last. :D
OT- I love Danger Mouse!!! Just sayin.

You know, I'm surprised it's not being talked about more on here, NYPinTA. Especially the Save Farscape thing. Doesn't seem to be a lot of hype that Save Farscape has it's own segment on the DVD.

My heart goes out to you! I had the same feeling way back when, when I first read LOTR. I couldn't read it fast enough until I came almost to the end, then I didn't want to finish it. I was lucky enough to get hooked on Farscape sometime mid-second season.(Of course I now own all the eps, either on DVD or on video that I taped off the air.) But take comfort in the fact that you have the DVD's and can revisit the Farscape world any time you want. And of course, now we have the mini to look forward to. Long live Farscape!

Heh heh, that's the same way I am. I walk real fast into my local MediaPlay store, make a beeline for the "just released" section, and GRAB IT! NOBODY TOUCHES my Farscape DVDs!! We loves our preciousssss, yessss we do.

When I started watching the first season DVDs, the 4th season had just premiered, so there was still the thought that this show was going to be on the air.
As for shows being saved because of DVD sales, use Browncoats (Firefly fans) single-handedly brought Firefly to the big screen because it sold so well on DVD.
I'm almost happy that I didn't watch Farscape in real-time, as the shock of it being cancelled would have been ten times worse. I was an AVID X-Files fan, and I remember how I felt when that show finally quit. I can't go through that ordeal again.
Plus, I'm too old now to get so involved with a TV show......Uh, no I'm not! After Farscape 4.5, the whole journey stars a-new on my DVD player!!!

I'm taking it slowly. I just finished WSS: FA. I thought the return of Harvey was a cop-out, and hoping that they elaborate on it more in the next ep, which I will be watching tonight.

I have some mixed feelings about Harvey's return myself. But I watched Promises again last night and the last thing Harvey says in John's mind was "Without Hesitation" wonder now if that was meant for Scorpious, meaning he would accept the assignment given to him.
