Coffee 'can make mind go blank'
By Nic Fleming
(Filed: 20/07/2004)

Drinking coffee can cause tip-of-the-tongue moments when the brain struggles to retrieve information, according to a study.

Caffeine, widely held to make people more alert, can make the mind go blank or struggle to switch between trains of thought.

It can help the brain process information rapidly but interferes once the brain tries to switch between subjects, researchers claim.

Volunteers were split into two groups, with one given 200 milligrams of caffeine - the equivalent of two cups of coffee. They then answered 100 questions after reading 10 "priming words" with between two and eight of the words sounding similar to the answer.

Caffeine appeared to help participants find the correct answers when primed with many similar sounding words. But when there were more unrelated priming words they suffered more tip-of-the-tongue moments than those who had not had coffee.

The study, by researchers in Italy, is published in Behavioral Neuroscience.link (http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/07/20/wcoff20.xml)

Oh. I thought you were going to say they exploded or something.
I can't speak much for baboons, but I did get to work on some Rhesus monkeys which had been in a freezer for 10 years. Major league gross.

eeewwww, nooooooo

If they are that bad, they don't travel.......they just wait for the clean up crew to get there....

Mind had a few live ones that have been pretty close, and on a side note to any one thinking of doing CPR, don't be surprised if you crack a few ribs ( shich sounds awful) and all that pushing on the chest can elicit a good few noise, from both directions.

Its okay, your not doing it wrong, its quite normal.

That's bad, scrapes. I think that tops all of mine for gross.

For bizarre, I think my tops was disposing of radio-active dog bones from a freezer... yep, that's right... fido got nuked, boned, then frozen.

I live in a strange universe.

Things like that are fairly normal.

.... wait a second... what were we talking about before? It is on the tip of my tongue... but it just escapes me!

Yes, grinning does help.....it also is a normal reflex when you have two newbies to the job, trying to cope with the smell of some old dear who has pooped her pants and called them out to clean it up, (sorry this is getting gross). I am laughing my head off whilst they are trying to bury theirs in their shirts. They can't understand how I am not gagging too. Hysterical.....:rollin:

At least your dead bodies are kept in the freezer! Not entirely. Everytime a hurricane or severe storm came through, the biomedical research facility would lose power. So what I got were thawed and refrozen monkeys, many times over. I had a filter mask, gloves and worked on the monkeys inside a hood with the vent on and it still didn't help. Monkeys do start to liquify after a while.

This is so pathetic. I'm trying to figure out what to have for dinner, and now all I can think about is exploding whales and liquified monkey.

True story. Driving into work, I got behind a guts truck. It sloshed chicken guts all over the road and I couldn't avoid it. That stuff got embedded all under my car, even after I went through the car wash twice. Ewwww, it was nasty nasty nasty. It took a week for the smell to start to fade. Uck!

No clean up crew. It wasn't a huge spill requiring clean up, just a slosh over the sides and back of the truck hauling it. And it sloshed its way all through town. I kept seeing puddles here and there along my route to work. Needless to say, it made driving in traffic interesting.

trinamick....you were saying?

Say! Yes, that's the word I was thinking of!

Actually, I do have a problem with the tip of the tongue issue. I don't drink coffee very often, but I do drink copius amounts of Dew. There are times when I'll start a sentence and the rest of it just goes right out the window. Of course, I'm kind of the absent minded professor anyrate, since I tend to multitask to the extreme. It's the stuff of legend at work, because I tend to talk too fast and mix words up (i.e. take the camera out of the film, etc.).

The chiropractor told me once that if something is out, and you are not getting enough oxygen to your brain, you start to mix words up, drop things, lose your train of thought, etc. Usually, my train of thought is still boarding at the station.

Did you hear about this bunny?
http://www.nbc10.com/slideshow/news/3487307/detail.html

Roberto is one big bunny. In fact, he's the size of your average 3-year-old child. The continental giant rabbit from Worcester, England, is 3.5 feet long and weighs 27 pounds. (He may have made the Guinness Book of World Records in the past, but the publication no longer lists large animals for fear that people might overfeed their pets to win.)

havent read all the comments, but i have one question...

they took what equals to 2 cups of coffee. so....how many of us drink 2 cups of coffee at the same time? i mean, it sounds like a really dumb question, but i would think that taking 2 cups of coffee would make the body react differently than 2 cups of coffee a day or 2 cups of coffee in a row, even. 2 cups of coffee at one time, though, i would think, makes a difference. but i could be wrong.
