View Full Version : Most Disturbing Farscape Moment (s1-s4 spoilers ahead)

Farscape is a more adult oriented sci-fi show, so what do you consider the most disturbing moment from the series?
I'll give you mine first, so you get the idea.
There's quite a few actually, but the first time I saw it, the most distrubing moment for me was in Prayer. The moment was when the Scarran aborted the alien fetus and they showed it. I didn't see that coming... quite disturbing.

There are alot, but the top would be the eyeball stuff, and when ever Rygel bit chunks out of people.

the women scent sucking machine from that season 3 ep. Forget its name...the one with moya john telling pilot the story about what happened on the planet. Kinda reminded me of a cow.

That's Scratch and Sniff.
Most disturbing to me? The 'thank you' from skiffy at the end of Bad Timing.
Actual episode moment though, John taking a taste of Scorpius' blood at the beginning of Prayer. I was soooooo not expecting that. And I do love that they went there to show even more of just how far he was willing to go for Aeryn.

Wow! There are so many. For me it's a three way tie between the eyeballs, the alien fetus and the brain sucking in Eat Me. Though the milking from Scratch 'n Sniff was pretty bad, too.
The blood thing is just icky, but not overly disturbing for me. The showing his mother sick is just plain cruel, as is the Oedipus moment. *shudders uncontrollably*

For me it's the whole Eat Me episode. The Peace Keepers gnawing on the Leviathan, looking like diseased zombies. The way the Pilot told John and Chiana that they cut off his arms for food over and over again because they grow back. Just one big yuck!

They do have a thing about eyeballs, don't they? I wonder if that's DK's personal nightmare, or Rockne's -- there's some reason eyeball stuff keeps showing up.
I wasn't bothered by Promises. I was very bothered by Eat Me (but the story worked so well dramatically that I couldn't fault anybody for excesses); I was very, very bothered by John's dying mother, and mostly by the massacre at the wedding ceremony.

I finally got a guy I knew to watch Farscape, ya' know, give it a try. He is a pretty straight laced guy but I thought he'd enjoy it. So what ep does he see? Coup by Clam. Granny and the mixer, biting off the nose and Scorpius hacking up clams. Anyway, he said he'd pass on the show.

Rygel biting off the Doc's nose. Grunchlik eating his finger (ugh!)
Oedipal stuff in WGFA.

Cuting off Pilot's arm. That seems to upset every convert I've ever made.
Upsetting thing NOT in S1 - S4.......one spoilery bit in the new trailer. If you don't audibly gasp or scream at the TV, I will be very surprised.
The Mini is going to ROCK!

I'll say the biting off of the finger thing and anything with eyeballs. I can feel my fingers getting crushed whenever I think about him taking that bite.

For me, it was:
Biting off the finger, the eyeball scene in ACN, Rigel carrying Durka's head like a trophy, Aeryn's torture in Prayer.

Most disturbing?
Granny peeing in a bucket. Granny getting her freak on in CBC. Granny dancing naked in LIAMST. Granny had a certain gross out factor for me at first, though after CBC she didn't act as gross. Perhaps they'd reached that mythical bridge too far.
I have a friend also who I tried to introduce to Farscape. She's a big ST:NG fan. Well, her comment to me was that she felt that there was too much gratuitous violence/gore in the show, like Rygel biting a chunck out of Aeryn's arm and swallowing it in EFG (I think that the one).
I, on the other hand, think it profoundly refreshing that there finally was a show were characters were allowed to actually get angry if the situation warranted it, actually demonstrate a range of emotions besides the placid competence displayed by Star Fleet Officers.

Most disturbing, hmmm...
3.11 Incubator - the rape. That would have to be the most distasteful scene, even if it did fit the plot. I much prefer the action side of Farscape to the shippy side, so most of the other situations don't really bother me much. Sure, there's a slight cringe-factor when Grunchlik's made to bite off and eat his own finger, but that's all - I wouldn't call it disturbing.
Some parts of Eat Me would be next in line - though I don't really watch that part of series 3 much, the whole twinning thing doesn't really appeal to me much (though the one where MoyaJohn and Aeryn visit Furlow and kill all those Charrids was good).
Can't remember the Granny stuff that got mentioned (sound really weird!) - which ep NUMBERS and in what series were they (I don't understand all the abbreviations, and am missing some episodes still) ?

I'd have to agree, seattlescaper. All of the Star Trek shows are far too sanitised and just plain boring. I like the living-on-the-edge, Mad Max style of Farscape much more.
Now there just needs to be more fanfic writers who write good action fics! Come on, fellow writers! You can do it!

Hey, Kazbaby-- are you the same Kaz from Zipper's board & the DSBB?
I'm only a member of a few boards: Here, Kansas, Dark Brigade, Ultimate (which i've only posted a few times there in two years) and the DOM. I know Zippers isn't one of those, not sure about DSBB.
SpaceMonkey
07-27-2004, 09:21 PM
Naw... DSBB stands for Dark Shadows Bboard-- as in Sci'fi cahnnel's. There's a guy, uses various versions of 'kaz' and I think he was even 'Kazbaby' at one point. Like John, you have a twin.
Another really gross scene : How about in Kansas, when Chi was drinkin' out of the toilet? ...."Look-- it's clean. See?!?!"
Darth Buddha

For me more disturbing than Grunschlick (sp?) biting off his finger, is him eating, :freak2: it nauseates me every time I watch those eps. Not sad he's effectively dead.
Most emotionally disturbing are the rapes, the abortion and the oedipal moment in WGFA (though that's probably my fav ep). We call that disturbing in a good way, though! :evil2:

The abortion alien fetus for sure
Chiana in the blue Moya in Through the Looking Glass
John attacking Chiana in Crackers was very unsetteling when I first saw it.
Rygel and Durka in PK Tech and Durka Returns
John's first turnings towards Harvy possession, the whole "crazy head Maizy"
Zhaan taking off her shawl to show her sores on her head to Stark.
Chiana and Jothee thing, it was a little gross, like they were related.
Chiana up in the air in Losing Time while it was trying to get rid of the ryder.
Chiana rescuing Taliquia in Twice Shy - whoa! very moving.
D'Argo ending the S4 screaming
Stark was going to show Jool horrors that'd make her scream forever.
Aeryn in the Scorpy coolant suit
Scorpius childhood
Chiana and Rygels bruises in Ck
Crais bleed back sores
Crais threatens Stark with a knife
Pilot and Moya in pain in LGM and SIW
Karvok sucks out D'Argoes brains
John shoots at everyone talking about ordering pizza in WGFA
There's a disturbing scene, I can't remember which ep but John is looking back and there's this real surreal, twisted feel to the bit.
shall I continue? hehehe

For me it would have to be Johns attack on Chiana in Crackers don't Matter. That episode has a lot of disturbing moments but I guess that was the point of the first 2/3's of the episode.
I'd have to say the rape of Scorpy's mother was pretty bad too. (Especially, when I think that it was all a put on by Scorpy to get John's simpathy.)
The brain eating and the finger eating are pretty gross but I guess I didn't see them as being disturbing. Talyn-John dying was disturbing but more so distressing.

I didn't know this until the other day, but that scene was actually cut out of the ep when it screened on ch9 in Australia. As someone who's seen s1-3 thanks to the DVDs, I didn't know this, and a friend who watched Farscape on ch9 told me there were quite a few scenes that were removed when aired here. Thank God for DVDs!
Something that makes me cringe would have to be the Scorpy/Sikozu stuff towards the end of s4.
I pretty much agree with all the other things people have suggested. But hey, it's Farscape, you're not meant to get comfortable!

Chiana and Jothee thing, it was a little gross, like they were related.
I think the entirly different species thing made it so I didn't make that connection.
I also think that John threatening Chiana in CDM is Farscape at its most disturbing.
Though a lot of the dudes in The Choice were unsettling to me. Like ol' bleedy eyes and little baldy

That old man head in Prefect was even uglier than that baby thing in Choice. I wasn't really disturbed by anything in Choice except that whole Aeryn scene with Crais and Stark and she says something like "What gets to me is you think you're so much better than he is." Very dramatic, it was great.
Plus Stark's "You're very pretty." To Aeryn, that was downright scary, especially because Aeryn looked very very worried and Stark looked very very mean

I gotta go with the eye thing from ACN, although there are quite a few to choose from...
Oooh! I just thought of another one. The scenes from WGFA with John's mother. Particularly the ones where she is dying, and the ones where she's hitting on him. Oh my.

the Oedipus complex (I think that's how it's spelled) didn't bother me that much but when she was sick and coming after him .... wow

I have to chose the one scene I STILL cannot watch. When Aeryn plunges through the ice. Her scrambling....calling out to John in panic. I still lose it. That tore me up. Still does. The thought of no Aeryn h u r t s -- worse than no Farscape.
I was freaking that Claudia was leaving Farscape for good. I was literally depressed for months. And I'm very rarely depressed. So for sheer impact, I go with killing my Aeryn.
Darth Buddha
07-30-2004, 05:01 AM
Yeah, but she wasn't "completely dead" only "technically dead".
Watching Talyn John be "completely dead" sucked too.. but is that the same as "disturbing"? Guess that depends on your definition of the word.
CeRell
07-30-2004, 10:44 PM
I didn't know she was 'only' technically dead at the time :D
As to what makes me barf, whince or otherwise feel disturbed...not too much..I seem to be able to stomach a lot...just can't handle the loss of John or even more...Aeryn.

John (or any one of his crew mates) being tortured at any time always disturbs me, but three that I didn't see mentioned were:
Aeryn's tongue-thing in WGFA
and
Stark listening in on John and Aeryn in Relativity
and
all the vomit in LAMST
These were actually "disturbing" to me, although I also was strangely intrigued by Aeryn's tongue-thing. :lech:
There are lots of things that make me cry, but that's a whole different animal.

most destervine moments exept the last scene in season 4 is when crithon lowers the the landing gears into aeryns prowler....
my heart beat was in frelling 1000000 beats per microt when i watched the scene......
Ouroboros

That scene kicked my armchair scientist persona right in the ball sack.
By necessity of it's function it can take orbital re-entry, collision with micro-meteorites at fractional C speeds, massive changes in heat/cold, likely some measure of damage from advanced weapons but a Nasa landing gear with a rubber tire on it was more than that poor prowler cockpit could handle...
My most disturbing scene was the rape of Scorpy's mom and subsequent capture/torture of Aeryn by the Scarrans.
The scenes in SaS also angered me. Fe-tor was oh so hateable.
