Teens tabbed for
plastic wrap incident
Bucher will charge four with felonies

WAUKESHA - Four teenage juveniles will face felony charges after investigators found they allegedly strung plastic wrap between two highway signs in the town of Waukesha and injured a motorcyclist and his girlfriend.
The four teenagers, three age 16 and one age 14, all from the town of Waukesha, will each be charged with two counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, possibly by the end of the week, said District Attorney Paul Bucher.

Each count carries a possible five-year prison term.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday lawyers representing two of the juveniles called the district attorney’s office two days after being interviewed by detectives.

The group is allegedly responsible for stringing plastic wrap between two highway signs across Guthrie Road near Highway I on July 13. At about 1:30 a.m., Dan Buckel, 22, of the town of Waukesha, and his girlfriend, Theresa Brzykcy, 19, of Brookfield, came upon the trap while riding his motorcycle.

Buckel called Wednesday’s developments a relief.

"It’s nice not to be waiting around any more waiting to find out," he said. "The sheriff’s department did an awesome job."

On the night of the accident, the couple was traveling slightly slower than the speed limit but Buckel still suffered a broken finger, road rash and a cut near his eye requiring 15 stitches. Brzykcy suffered scratches to her body.

Sheriff Dan Trawicki announced more than 50 tips came in offering information about the incident. These tips led to interviews with the first two individuals to contact Bucher’s office, the sheriff’s department said.

Detectives then went on to interview all the juveniles allegedly involved.

Shortly after the incident, personal injury lawyer Michael F. Hupy offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible.

Hupy will represent Buckel in any litigation which results from this case, the lawyer said in a statement. The purpose of offering the reward was to prevent copycat crimes from taking place, he said.

"I am extremely glad to hear that the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department has broken this case thanks to citizen tips," he said.

Bucher joined Hupy in offering a $1,000 reward through CrimeStoppers for helpful information. The district attorney said Wednesday that CrimeStoppers will evaluate which tips helped solve the case and then determine what reward amount should be given.

None of the allegedly responsible juveniles will be tried as adults, Bucher said. The charges do not allow the 14-year-old to be tried in adult court, he said. Also, circumstances would not likely allow the 16-year-olds’ cases to pass a state legal test which would bring them into adult court, Bucher said.

stupid teens doing stupid things. one of my friends yelled at a few of her friends because they wanted to steal a stop sign. it seemed harmless to them, but she got angry at them because it could've really hurt someone, if they didn't think there was a stop sign.

It's good that no one was seriously injured, but still doesn't excuse what they did.

I wouldnt do this if its a really hot and sunny day. The plastic can stick to a paint job. Not pretty when trying to get it off and then having to pay for it to get fixed.

This is also true for filling the cab of a truck full of packing peanuts. What a melted mess.

And malign.

That's no prank, and in most areas that is a well known consequence of taking somebody off a bike by ANYTHING strung across a roadway or even a dirtbike path. I've even had a friend who decapitated himself on a guy wire across a bike path when he was 17.

I hope they throw the book at them, HARD!

Am I just getting jaded and remembering earlier generations through a rose filter or are kid's pranks actually becoming more deadly with the last couple generations? Seems there's just no empathy or remorse anymore.

(Also, note to self: these bananas have got to go, I think. Are they as annoying as I think they are?)

I can see it that way, too. It's just when I was in Florida (we're talkin 12+ years ago), I heard about kids shooting supersoakers and throwing waterballoons of acid (forget which, but it was enough to eat through paint [and not the plastic, obviously]) off overpasses. Now, while not really deadly, it did start my cynicism toward youth while I was still firmly in mine.

I haven't really recovered and things like this continually uphold my position that it's getting worse per generation.

people have gotten stupider because a while back there was a story of a few teens throwing rocks (or was it hail) off an overpass and one hit a car and caused a huge accident. thank goodness no one was seriously injured.

Now, I have put plastic wrap over the toilet bowl while a couple was on their honeymoon. (and some styrofoam peanuts under the bed sheets... and a bucket of confetti tied to the doorjam above the bedroom door... and...) :innocent:

We did things when I was a teen that now make me shudder, but we never intentionally tried to hurt someone. (Unless we were fighting them face to face). I do think the pranks are getting more vicious than in years past. When we fought with fists, the little bastards pull a 9mm now.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Buddha. Did they find the ones responsible? If so, I hope they got charged with murder. :(

And they are not considered "cool" among their peers unless they have a gun. Sad, really. :(
