England hires first jester in 355 years.

LONDON - Kester the Jester beat out six other contestants to win the title of England's State Jester Saturday.
Kester, also known as Nigel Roader, a professional juggler, makes history as the first person to fill the role of jester since Oliver Cromwell abolished the position in 1649 and put Muckle John out of a job.
Historically, jesters entertained monarchs and distracted them from more pensive problems. But Kester's job will be to entertain crowds at castles and other historic sites around England, not royalty, said Tracy Borman, English Heritage's head of events.
The ad for the job told interested applicants that they must be "mirthful and prepared to work summer weekends in 2005, must have own outfit (with bells). Bladder on stick provided if required."
No salary range was published. That, says English Heritage, will be negotiated.
