Hello All You Fine Farscapians

It is just your old pal Ash here starting a brand new thread (for a VERY good reason!)

Recently something VERY unusual has happened to TWO programs on my computer. I use Windows 2000 as my operating system and NEVER before has this happened,...
Alow me to explain: just recently i was online on my computer surfing and chatting as usual, my mum wanted me to go with her down to the local supermarket so i did my bit as the faithfull son and came offline, closed all thje programs i had currently open on my task bar and shut-Down my PC (As you do when you are leaving it) and got into my mums car and we drove to the supermarket.
when we were done and arrived back at my house i helped her un-pack the shopping and when i had done that i went back on my PC computer. I started it up as usual and logged in. After my desktop had loaded i noticed an error message that stated: "<Process has already ended> has generated errors and will be closed by Windows." I was obviously baffled by this so i thought for a moment but decided to continue with what i was doing beiing as there had been no OBVIOUS problem caused by this error, until i connected back to the Internet. My modem established a connection but then i got another error message which stated: "IEXPLORE.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows, you will need to restart the program" knowing this was my Internet Explorer application i restarted it and got another error message but this time it was serious; a window appeared stating the program had generated errors but this time it was asking me to send an error report to Microsoft so i did and checked the "Restart Program?" box and clicked send, the error report sent but EXACTLY the same message appeared AGAIN asking me to send the report again also so i did it one more and left the "Restart Program?" box again and clicked send and yet again, EXACTLY the same error box appeared again, so this time i sent the report one last time but un-checked the "Restart program?" box, and after that thje message stopped appearing but as a result i could not use Internet Explorer. Luckily i have Netscape Browser 7.2 so i am still able to get to this savefarscape site and netscape DOES work perrfectly so i was off the hook there. After posting in the "Ignore This Thread" thread (Which i might add has disappeared) i minimized Netscape whalst waiting for replies and decided to use my "Windows Explorer" program to look through my music collection but THAT did'nt work EITHER and was giving me EXACTLY the same error message as Internet Explorer was which in this case was: "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows, you will need to restart the program" but restarting was'nt working and it just kept giving me the same error message and imedietly terminating the program. So i tried re-booting my computer but not even THAT worked! And i kept getting the same error messages on both programs. So as a result i CANNOT get to Windowsupdate.com to get the latest patch for my sytem 'coz my Internet Explorer was not functioning to do that. I tried going to the update site via my Netscape browser but the update service is ONLY compatible with Internet Explorer so i am in one FRELL of a Rough Circle!!! I have already scanned my system with my Anti-Virus system SEVERAL times and it has found NOTHING. I also ran my spyware remover to but that has done no good!

I Am Crying Out To MY Fellow Farscapions For Help And Suggestions!

So if whoever reads this thread has had this happen to THERE Operating System or even if they just know a pal thats had it happen to them LET ME KNOW so i can understand the cause of this stupid situation.

I eagerly await your replies, Don't let me down now loyal Scapers!

Many Regards; Ash A.K.A. Agentwillmore

Well, your explorer is frelled, that's for sure :D

You could try this:

Repair option for Microsoft Windows 2000.

Follow the following steps:

Make sure CD-Rom is first Boot Device in your Bios
Insert your Windows 2000 CD
Once this is done boot up using CD-Rom Drive. ( When "Hit any Key to Boot From CD-Rom" appears on screen, hit any key on keyboard to invoke CD-Rom boot)
The "Repair Options" screen will eventually appear after Windows 2000 has loaded in device drivers. Press "R" to begin repair process.
Soon you will see another "Repair" menu. Select "F" to perform all repair options.
Now the "Emergency Repair Disk" menu will appear. If you have created the Emergency Repair Disks hit enter else press "L"
Windows 2000 will now search for installs on your system
The "Windows Installs" menu will appear. If you only have one install then press "ENTER" on your keyboard to continue. Or if there's more than one select the installation you wish to repair and then hit "ENTER"
Windows 2000 will now repair your system either from the Emergency Repair Disks (ERD) or from the CD, once done your system will reboot and hopefully everything will be working fine.

If that doesn't work I suggest doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 2000.

if you are using IE 6 then try

open a command prompt window

then type the following and hit enter after each line

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

if this doesn't work, let me know. Win2k is a good OS, it still has some buffer issues. Win2k is supposed to repair it's dll problem on it's own, I've seen it do it, but I've also seen it not do it.

Try deleting all your cookies, and temporary internet files. Deleting the cookies is the important part, then do what I suggested again. Since you don't have the install disc, there isn't much you can do, but I have been able in the past to recover some pretty screwed up systems, so hang in there.

If my last suggestion doesn't work, try this, it will work, and there is only one reason I don't like doing it, what if you don't have a "last known good" configuration, you could be making it worse. I've seen win2k do this.

I currently do not have win2k set up on any system, that works, so I'll be giving you some info from memory, whatever you do, don't change anything you see at all. You are just looking around.

click on start then "run"

type regedit.exe then hit enter. You should see an explore window appear that's called "registry editor" this is a dangerous place, so take your time.

Once inside you want to open a folder called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"

Then you open a folder called "Select"

In this folder you just want to observe that the file" LastKnownGood " is there. If so, then close that window, close all programs, then reboot.

While you're system is booting up, hit the F8 key until the safe mode screen appears.

go ahead and select Last Known Good Configuration and hit enter.

This will only solve any registry issues you have and may not help your IE issue. if it doesn't let me know that as well. There are other options.

I've googled the quote "IEXPLORE.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows, you will need to restart the program" and have found a few interesting responses.

One knowledgebase article recommends uninstalling Zonealarm and/or Quarterdeck Cleansweep. Another page suspects that Xupiter is installed.

Have you tried starting in Safe mode? If Explorer works in Safe mode, the problem is related to another program.

I suspect that you picked up some spyware before you shut down. Xupiter is a nasty one, and they do cause trouble. Do you have Spybot and/or Ad-Aware installed?

Something to try: Go to 'Control Panel'/'Internet Options.' Go to the 'Advanced' tab and scroll down to 'Enable third party browser extensions' and uncheck it. Click OK and close out. Now try Internet Explorer.

If that doesn't work, try this from the command line:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
(It's all one line...)

right... i have tried EVERY singel thing possible that both you ThirdEYe and you BillFrugge suggested... and aadly... ALL OF IT has failed APART from ONE thing... i have sent you a private message BillFrugge , just incase you don't visit this thread again (now it is at the botton of the list) this is for anyone else that visits this thread but if you are out there BillFrugge then reply....: When i ran my system in SAFE mode both My Windows explorer AND my Internet Explorer worked again... BUT i could hardly use any of the devices on my system i.e: my modem, scanner, webcam etc etc.now i remembered what you Billfrugge told me to do if it works in safe mode and that was to find out what the program causing it NOT to work in normal mode is... now i am not entirely sureon how to do that because i have quit a few programs on my sytem and could'nt possibly find the timne to uninstall each program one-by-one until it worked.. so ia m appealing to you Billfrugge or ANYONE else who could tell me on how to discover which program is causing this....

Cheers again!

Ash.

Yes. Safe mode uses standard drivers, thereby disabling some hardware.

Since Explorer works under safe mode, you have a program that runs whenever you start your computer. You might find something in the startup folder. (There are several ways to get a program to run on startup...)

If you bring up the task manager (right-click the taskbar or ctrl-alt-del) you can see what programs are running. If you see anything suspicious, you can end the task. I've seen expIore in the list before. (The I looked like an l in the font used by the task manager.) This can be difficult because of all of the programs that are running.

Windows 2000 doesn't have the msconfig.exe program found on Windows 98 (but you can run it on 2000 if you copy the file...) There is a program at http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml that will do the same job nicely. It will allow you to turn off items in the start process, and re-enable them. It's a lot easier than going into the registry.

Basically, uncheck some of these programs and see if that cures it. If it works, you can re-enable programs until the problem returns. (You'll need to reboot each time.)
