She needs to find out the name of the .exe program that is causing it to come back then find it using the search function and delete it. Ad-aware will at least tell her what the programme is called even if it cant kill it. Then go to start - search and look for the programme then delete it. If it won't delete then move it from the folder its in (probably startup) to another folder then try deleting it again. I had to do this to get rid of a hijacker recently that ad-aware / spy hunter couldn't get rid of.
Do you have any names or words that come up i.e as a shortcut?
In addition to Ad-Aware, she might also need to download Spybot Search and Destroy. It sometimes catches/fixes things Adaware misses.
Free, as well. Update the definitions before running the scan, and be aware that (at least on my system at home) it won't run in a resolution higher than 800 x600. Beats me why, but if I don't lower my res, it locks up when it tries to run. Good luck!
Ok I'm passing this on from my frend. thanks you to you all.
Hi all! Thanks for the help. I have Ad-aware already and also PestPatrol. Neither of them have helped fix the problem though. I think I might try Spybot. I've been through the registrry and everything though so it seems rather futile as neither of my ad-ware busting programs are picking anything up anymore, yet IE still insists on saving images only as .bmp files. I'm currently using Mozilla Firefox. Anyway, thank you for the help, it's much appreciated ^_^
You might also pass along this link if Spybot comes up empty. It gives some solutions, settings, and some registry keys to check.

I use both Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy and they both work and complement each other wonderfully. Since I've started using them, and Firefox as my IE, I have had at least a 90% reduction in spy and adware.

What about registry keys in Windows 98SE that I could look for?
What about registry keys in Windows 98SE that I could look for?
Can't find any good sources at the moment, and I'm away from my home computer, which is 98SE. You could try running regedit, then searching for jpg, jpeg, and gif to see if there are some corresponding entries in the 98 registry. Make a registry backup first before changing anything, of course.
If you're feeling brave, here's a spot where you can download a reg fix, then merge it with your existing registry. http://www.geocities.com/one_human/advanced.html#JPG_GIF_fix
Does seem to be for Win 98.
Alternately, fire up regedit and search for gif, jpg, jpeg and bmp, and write down any keys you find. Google them and see if you can find any better info from that angle, instead. I'll try to check on my own registry later if I don't forget.
