LEOBEN, AUSTRIA - An Austrian man who tried to hold police at bay by swinging deadly cobras at them was in hospital on Monday with a gunshot wound and a snake bite.
Police shot the man to end a standoff during which the man wrapped two cobras around himself.
The 40-year-old's girlfriend called police when she received a text message on her cellphone in which he threatened to kill himself, Austrian television reported.
Two officers went to the man's apartment in Leoben, a town in the southern Austrian province of Styria, where they found him intoxicated and wrapped in snakes.
After they tried to overpower him using pepper spray, the man began to swing the snakes at the officers.
One of the police shot the man in the thigh.
The man was bitten on the hand by one of the snakes.
A reptile expert was called to the scene, who said the man was a snake dealer and had 60 reptiles in his apartment. The snakes were taken to a local zoo.
