The New Episodes
The final three books in the Hitchhiker 'trilogy' are being adapted for Radio 4 in two new series starting in September 2004 and May 2005.

Starting Thursday evening (Eastern Time) the first episode will be available on Streaming Media via the nets. (but each ep will only be on for a week)...

Here's a Sneak Preview (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/media/hitchhikers_trail.ram) in RAM.

That is so awesome. Now I need to figure out a way to record this so I can listen to it later. I have tapes of the original I just listened to a couple weeks back.

Don't Panic!

Starting Thursday, they'll have a streaming version of each episode on-line for a week. Will the old Rightclick-SaveAs trick work?

The trick is to remember to d/l it each Friday! :D

Did you listen to the preview? Isn't it great to hear the old music again?

And (almost) the entire original cast too!

I don't know if "save as" will work since it's a streaming broadcast. I will have a whole week to figure it out though. :D I can see this, I hook my computer up to his computer so that I can record it. :lol

I don't think you can easily do a "Save As" for a full-fledged streaming broadcast and get anything other than the link that goes back to the server. Once they take the broadcast off the server, you can't listen any more. But if you download Audiograbber, a lovely little piece of freeware, you can record the show with it. I did so when I wanted to record some radio shows on the Renaissance by Terry Jones. Worked like a charm. It can be found here http://www.download.com/Audiograbber/3000-2140-10262582.html?tag=lst-0-1

That's why I'm in geology and not I.T. ;) :D :innocent:

Thanks. I was wondering why it was so quick to download! :D

Just look a little bit further down on the right side of the page... About where it says 'Download the audio preview' in MP3 format...

The catch is that they probably won't post the entire program in MP3, though. They'll just do the streaming broadcast. Or at least, if they've started posting the entire program after broadcast, that's new since the last time I listened to a web broadcast on the Beeb. Grant you, it's been a while, but best I remember, at the time, they were very adamant in their policy of not posting the entire program. Wish they were more NPR-ish about that... I had buffering problems during the third in the Renaissance series and never did get to hear that one! First two recorded great, barely got five sentences of the last one, darn the luck.

Mac users will want to get a copy of Audio Hijack or the freeware WireTap. They'll capture the audio as it comes off Real Player and store it in a file.

Downloadable? All I get is a small file, and then it streams audio from the web. Best thing I can find is to use Goldwave to record all sound.

Yeah, I chose my words poorly. It is a streaming file...

BillFrugge

Darn! I was hoping I'd missed something.

At any rate, I've got part one in a playable file. I hope I don't miss any, or that they'll leave all of the episodes up as they're added. I do a lot of driving, and that's where I'd like to listen to it.

As long as you pick a weekly time to check it out, you should be okay.

The trick is remembering each week. ;)

42?

LT Garrix
09-25-2004, 12:34 PM
Bill, they are only having each up for the week after original airing from what I understood. As Kurt said, just pick a time each week to get it and you should be okay.

Crapola, I missed part 1. RL intervened. I'll have to catch part 2 when I get home. I hope they release this on CD in the US when it's over. Of course, I can always order it from the UK.

It should still be on the server.

(That worked the other day. I'm stuck in a hotel, and I can't play anything. Frelling network keeps dropping my connection...)

I expect that it will make it to CD. I purchased the first two phases from Doug's site, and I'd like to keep my collection complete. (I've even got the 3 record set!)

Thanks, Bill, but it doesn't appear to be working anymore. No worries, I'm sure I'll pick up what's going on, I've read the books numerous times.

But Episode 4 is on tomorrow! And it's got one of my favourite sequences! :D

I have been informed that there will be a 3 CD release later this month, but I haven't been able to verify that. Keep looking.

If you have newsgroup access, look into alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc and alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc.highspeed. There have been numerous conversions to MP3 and AC3 codecs in the last month. A good server might still have them available.

also check out "My visit to The Hitchhiker's to the galaxy movie set" Interesting.......

After a full hour of total bewilderment, Robbie led us for a tour in Elstree studios. We entered the Vogon Spaceship and saw the marvellous work made by the Henson team. The Vogons are simply incredible, fully detailed from their shoes to their facial hairs. Touching the face of the Captain Vogon is an extreme experience I won't forget, should I live to be 199 years old! Henson also made other things including a really amazing Vogon throne (but I wont say more should you read some Vogon poetry). At last we also saw the Magrathean spaceship used by Arthur and Slartibartfast to travel inside Magrathea... I was not aware that the creature shop was at all involved in making the movie. Wow, both the new Star Wars and Hitchiker's Guide. Good for them.

Amazon has the tertiary phase on CD! ... Amazon.co.uk, that is... If you've got an Amazon account, your login is the same. Currency conversion is handled by your bank. (As a rough estimate, I use $2 to the pound...)

I've done this once before with one of the Blake's 7 DVD sets, and my CDs are already on their way to me. I ought to be able to listen to it in the car before episode 6 is on the web.

BBC Tertiary Phase website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/)

Live Webchat on October 26
Director Dirk Maggs will be joining us for a Live Webchat on October 26 at 7.00pm, immediately after the final episode of The Tertiary Phase. You can send him a question right now.
