Kalashnikov raises a toast in London to launch his namesake vodka.

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- The creator of one of the world's most famous guns, the AK-47 assault rifle, has launched another weapon in Britain -- Kalashnikov vodka.

Lt. Gen. Mikhail Kalashnikov, who invented the AK-47 after being shot by German soldiers during World War II, said Monday he wanted to continue "the good name" of his gun.

"I've always wanted to improve and expand on the good name of my weapon by doing good things," he told Reuters Television.

"So we decided to create a vodka under my name. And we wanted that vodka to be better than anything made, up until now, in both Russia and England."

The Kalashnikov rifle has become the weapon of choice for guerrillas and gangsters across the world. But Kalashnikov said his original intentions for the gun were purely patriotic.

"I did not create the gun for international conflicts, I created it to protect the borders of my country," he said.

"It is not my fault that it has been spread all over the world. It is its reliability and its simplicity that have taken it all over the world."

Promoters of Kalashnikov vodka, which is 82 proof, say it is "made from grain harvested in Russia and water drawn from Lake Ladoga north of St. Petersburg" and is best drunk with friends.Link (http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/09/20/kalashnikov.vodka.reut/index.html)

don't know... it is the assault rifle that I own... A Norinco MAK-90. A M(odified) AK 1990. After 89, it was illegal to sell an assault rifle with a pistol grip... so these AK's were modified with an integrated grip.

They always were legal to sell in the US. You could go to any gun store and buy a MAK-90. You couldn't buy a 15 round mag, a 30 round mag or a 100 round drum. The only Magazine you could buy was a 5 round mag. Also, to buy one, the ability to make fully auto had to be totally inoperable. That is, you could not modify the gun to fire fully auto. Since my MAK-90 is Pre-Ban, got it in 1992, it still could be converted to fully auto.

The "Assault Rifle Ban" that went into effect in 1994 did NOT make it illegal to buy/own or sell an Assault Rifle. They were still LEGAL. What the so-called ban did do was make it so IF you wanted to buy one, you had to register the gun and wait 30 days before getting the gun.

That hat should be classified a weapon.

sorry, I need to rephrase my first comment about the law. No 'NEW to the US' Assault Rifles could be brought into the States, but existing ones could be sold and owned legally.

Great toy brother!

I got a Bushmaster XM15 (Basically an M4). Got a laser scout scope as well. The round is lighter, but find the rifle more accurate than an AK.

I would like to get my favorite modified AK, the Dragunov, it would be great for going wild boar hunting! The beasts down here are maneaters.

At least high capacity mags are cheaper. Maybe I can finally replace my piece of shit mags from Israel!
