First, you must imagine this being said in a really whiney only-child kind of voice.

Now on with the fun!

My computer hates me and I feel similarly towards it.

Every time I turn it on it gives me 3 error boxes. They say error loading mouse, error loading keyboard, and something else I don't remember.

It also won't download things even though it says it does download them it really doesn't. It's denying that it lies even now as I type. For example, I have AdAware which I run regularly, but when I tried to download spybot and bazooka it said, "Yes! I downloaded that! No, I won't show it to you or let you use it."

I've been talking to janey_13 about it (we really need to bring back the janey_13 appreciation thread!) and she reccommended the Quick Restore stuff that came with my computer. This had been done before...about 3 years ago, if not more. So I read the directions, backed up all my files onto discs, and entered disc 1. It started doing stuff, making noise and such, and then told me there were Error: Bad Sequence Number, but no option but to hit okay. So I did. Twice. It went away. Everything else worked as the directions said it would. Then at the end, the directions said it would prompt to restart. It didn't..it just went away and I was left with the same wallpaper and programs I'd had before. So I restarted it. Nothing. Nada.

What's going on??? Any ideas? Somebody make it work!!! :lol

I don't really have a clue but could it be a nasty virus? I've had similar simptoms in the past because of a virus and there is one doing the rounds right now called W32.Beagle.J@mm, I've received several e-mails on various free accounts sent by noreply@yahoo.de, noreply@hotmail.com etc. the attachment was a .pif file and no I didn't open it. They can also be called differently, part of what it does is terminate processes related to some security programs.

See the Symantec website for details:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/w32.beagle.j@mm.html

obviously this is just a suggestion, I don't know if this is your problem :(

Good luck!

I've gotten weird emails, but if I don't know who they are from I don't open them. Does that matter?

I'll check out the link you gave me. Thanks! :)

What Windows version is this? Millenium Edition?

It's Windows XP the Home Edition.

If you don't open those e-mails you should usually be alright, unless you use any kind of file-sharing program and such I've read it also spreads through Kazaa for example.

What is exactly the problem with Bazooka and Spybot. Does it give you an error when you start downloading it, when it finishes the download or when you click on it?

And also, when did you start experiencing these problems? Did you install something the day before it happened?

These have been gradual problems all leading up to like, now when I want to throw my comp out the window.

Another thing it does is it won't let me set my homepage to anything. Anytime I do, it just comes up something Yahoo saying Sorry, the page you requested cannot be found. Liars!!!

I don't use any kind of filesharing program, but some friends have sent me photos and vids through instant message programs.

The errors w/ Spybot and Bazooka are different. Spybot it only gives me the option to save to disc, and then if I say okay and put a disc in it can't fit on a disc. Bazooka it downloaded the setup icon thingy, and then when I click on it to set it up, it doesn't do anything at all. It just stares at me.

So from what I understand you're trying to store spybot on a floppy disk ( A: ). I checked the size of spybot and it's 4 Megabytes. A floppy disk can contain a maximum of 1.44 Megabytes, so that's not enough for spybot. You should try saving spybot on your local harddrive ( C: ). I don't know why the Bazooka setup doesn't start though. It should fit on a floppy disk.

maybe you should try and download Spybot from a different computer, save it to disk and then try and install it that way, it does sound a little like a hijack to me ???

Worst case you can always reformat the hard drive and start 100% over. Pain in the eema. I had a corrupt file in the boot log and couldn't restore it and had to start over. Worst part was I didn't have time to back files up. By installing a second copy of XP I was able to back most of it up, though I did miss a few key ones. Oh well. Such is life.

It won't let me do anything but save to disc. It offers nothing else and when I click on that little tab for other options, it won't give any.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys. :)

When you have the option to save to a disc, that generally means either hard drive, floppy drive, zip or CD. You should be able to change the drive to c: when you save it to disc.

Are you able to boot up into "safe mode"?

This definitely sounds like a possible virus problem to me. I had a similar problem not long ago. I tried several times to restore the computer back to a previous day's restore point (an excellent feature of XP I think) but I continued to have the same problems. The problem is that every time you reboot, the virus (if it is a virus) simply reinstalls itself. You need to kill it first.

I suggest running as many kinds of sweeps (Nortel, Adaware, whatever) as you can while running in "safe mode". To get to "safe mode" simply shut down the computer completely, and shut it off. You can leave the monitor on. Then when you turn the computer back on keep hitting the F8 Key until a Command Screen comes up. Using the arrow keys you can chose the mode you want to run in. If you want to run in Safe Mode, chose that. Or, you can run in Safe Mode with Networking. That will allow you to use the internet while protecting your computer.

Run all your regular scans with the internet connection turned off. If you are in "Safe Mode with Networking" , go to the internet and go to housecall.trendmicro.com. No need for http\\. This site has a free virus scan that catches lots of stuff that Adaware and Norton won't.

You may also want to try to download Spybot while in Safe Mode in case you have a virus that interferes with security devices.

If you get something that cannot be deleted write down the entire path for where it is located. Then, click on the START button at the bottom left of the monitor. Go to Search, then to For Files or Folders. Do a search for the infected file by typing in part or all of the file name. When/if something comes up, right click on it and delete it.

Once you've cleaned things up as best you can reboot entirely and see if you get the same errors. To get back to Normal Mode you'll need to follow the same steps as you did to get to Safe Mode.

Thanks Digger!

One question...my comp is always online, as soon as I turn it on it's online. How do I make it not be?

What kind of connection do you have?

I have that Comcast whatever-it-is that comes through the cable tv. LOL I know nothing of comps. :lol I know that it's wireless. If I just take off the wireless thingy will that work? But won't I have to reinstall that?

Ahh! Late for work!

Thanks again! :D

JL, you take out the wireless thingy and it will be okay. I have a wireless card, too and one the of the nice things about XP is that you can take it out and put it back in and you won't have to reboot the computer. Sometimes I take it out to force myself to do work rather than surf.

I don't know much about PCs, let alone the XP Home Edition, so I maybe I'm just PC'ing in the wind here. Still I'd like to think that this Mac user can help my virtual PC using friends when there is a need.

Here are some links that I didn't stumble across:

TheElderGeek (Links) (http://www.theeldergeek.com/links.htm)

Err, can't remember what this was, but it looked good. :D (http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/)

Something about 'ToolBarCop'? (http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ie/downloadmgrs.htm)

Kelly's XP Corner (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm)

XP Forum (http://forums.winxpcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8)

Annoyances Org (http://www.annoyances.org/)

Anyway, I hope that I've been of some help.

Jacqui if you're running XP with a wireless connection, there should be a Wireless icon in the system tray (at the bottom right of your screen, by the clock). Double click it, and then click "Disconnect". That should shut off the wireless connection.

haha janey13 I doubt that very much *lol* these things can be hard to solve when you're not sitting right in front of the problem pc yourself.

I think Diggers suggestions sound very good to me, I remember doing something similar to solve my virus problem at the time. Jacqui you should definitely try that and get help from a friend if you find it too complicated.

Arg!!! I hate my comp! LOL Thanks so much everyone for all your help. I need to find time to sit down and do all this.

janey_13, I don't think you broke my comp! It was broke before you suggested anything! :D
