View Full Version : Stanz's gender [spoilers for 1.13]
On the Farscape board over at Media Blvd (http://www.mediablvd.com), a question arose, that I thought I'd seen a response to, or a theory, over here at FMD before, but I can't seem to find it by searching the forums.
The question was, "Why didn't the other Zenetan pirates know Stanz was a female. When they board Moya they ask for "him"? Shouldn't they know he was female?"

It seems not many were familiar with "her" species. Remember noone from Moya's crew knew she was a female.

I think D really missed out on getting a life partner. He would have been SO happy. :P

Ah he was just holding out for Crichton ;)
What I meant was, weren't the other Zenetan pirates the same species as Stanz, and if so, why'd they refer to Stanz as a him? (I guess because they might have known that Moya's crew would have known Stanz as a him, and not a her, but I think there was another explanation that I've seen)

Not that this is canon or anything, but the Farscape RPG book explains that even Zenetans have trouble telling females from males...don't tell me you've never mistaken a human to be a member of the gender they weren't. Why should the Zenetans be any different?

thats what i would have thought, cos otherwise they would have to deal with shocked people and all the bad jokes! and well the embassisment (sp?) of the explanation some people would want! would love to hear that!! :lol

simple - it would've blown the gag.

Not necessarily. Best I remember, I took "Zenetan" to just mean they were from the same planet. Now, I can only find this reference to a quote on the SciFi boards, so I'm reluctant to stand by it without rewatching the episode, but the post I stumbled across quoted Staanz as saying "I'm a Yemen by species."
So, it's possible that Staanz isn't the same species as the other Zenetans. I took "Zenetans" to be roughly equivalent to saying "Earthings" or "Martians" for instance. I thought it referred to their planet of origin rather than their species. So, I reckon it's possible, but without rewatching the ep, I can't say for sure. Either way, Staanz seems to have been successfully masquerading as a "him" with the pirates.

Possibilities..
Zenetans don't know either (although Staanz did say she was quite the beauty be Zenetan standards)
Zenetans call everyone him. That's quite possible, actually.
The translator microbes were also fooled by Staanz's appearance.
