Education pays big-time, StatsCan says

OTTAWA - A Canadian-born couple with a university education made much more money in 2000 than a comparable couple in 1980, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.

But couples with high school education or less "have struggled to maintain their standard of living," the agency said.

That means the gap between less-educated couples and their more-educated counterparts "widened considerably" over the 20-year period, Statistics Canada said. The study, which uses constant dollar figures adjusted for inflation, was based on census data.

Gender gap shows in income differences

There was also a big gender gap.

Better-educated men made more, while those with less education saw their incomes drop by as much as 28 per cent, mainly because pay rates fell.

In contrast, all women did better, although education again made a big difference.

University-educated women made between $8,400 and $23,000 more, while those with a high school diploma or less made $5,400 more.

Because of the gender difference, some less-educated couples were able to hold their incomes steady as the wife's increased income offset the drop in the husband's earnings.

University worth up to 22% more

In general, a Canadian-born university-educated couple made between 14 and 22 per cent more in 2000 than a similar couple would have in 1980.

The incomes of couples with high school diploma or less were mainly "no higher than those of their counterparts in 1980."

Among the couples with less education, younger couples lost more ground than older couples.
