View Full Version : Why does John call Chiana, Pip?

'Pip' is a nickname actor Ben Browder gave Gigi Edgley when she walked out in full Chiana costume the first time. To him it just seemed to fit, and she's been stuck with it ever since. :)
The writers, ever hungry for witty and weird stuff, put it into Crichton's dialogue. Alot. It's become Gigi's nick as well.
Pip was also a Charles Dickens character in Great Expectations.

Yea, it has nothing to do with Pip from Great Expectations though. He saw her in the costume and thought she was like "Pippy Longstockings." All cheery and jolly. Though I don't see how you compare the sexy Chiana to a redhead schoolgirl that quite frankly scared me.

Also, from the phrase "pip squeak".

I think we're all getting to philosophical for a subject that doesn't need it. Here's a good topic... To frell or not to frell?

Pip is the main charachter in "Great Expectations." It is interesting to think that this is where the writers, or actors, got Pip.
http://www.online-literature.com/dickens/greatexpectations/
"Great Expectations is a coming of age story that revolves around the life of one man Pip. From the time he was seven years old until he was in his mid-thirties, Pip shows us the important events in his life that shaped who he became. Along the way, he acquires a menagerie of different acquaintances and friends that influence him in his decisions and goals for his life.
Pip’s story has one main point: no matter what happens to a person in their life, a person cannot change who they are inside. Pip does not realize this at first however. From the time he met Estella and Miss Havisham, Pip tried to change himself to fit a mold that he thought they desired. He began simply, learning to read and write. As time went on, and his circumstances changed, Pip pulled farther and farther away from where he came from and in doing that, who he was. Through his story, people see that this type of change brings him no joy, and in Pip's case, exactly the opposite."
---
The story is an interesting counterpoint to Chiana's life. She is trying to get away from an oppressive society.
Is she the anti-Pip? Refusing to conform at all cost? Is she full of joy?
She certainly has a interesting mixed bag of friends.
God- I still miss literature class. Why couldn't I have done "Great Expectations" once instead of "The Scarlet Letter" three times in three different classes. Hawthorne bites!

Pretty sure it is a Great Expectations reference. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if it was. ;)

It was Ben's nickname for Gigi first. I really doubt he saw her as a young British boy trying desperately to fit into a society of rich people and snobby women. I still believe it was a Pippy Longstockings thing or something like calling a person a "Pip." They're just to much to handle, unique and inventive.

Originally I thought it was Great Expectations; then I saw the first Lord of the Rings movie (I'm a bit behind with some things). Pip is the Hobbit charactor who's slightly out of it, but is a true and loyal friend and goes along with the other Hobbits because they're all friends (I'm paraphrasing here). It's the last scene on the first DVD in the first movie and when it finished, the Marandken family got that AH HA feeling about Chi.

pip maybe named after the seed in a fruit
or series of high pitched sounds used as signals on radio, Chiana maybe be quiet chirpy
or is she called after the spots on a domino or dice...they are afterall black n white ?

My $0.02 worth...
Since Crichton has almost always considered and treated Chiana like his small step-sister (several light-years removed? ;) ), the nickname 'pip' from pip-squeak would fit. I know I have called my younger siblings 'pip-squeaks', among other colorful nicknames, several times. :D
Also, reminds me of a Marvel comic book character called Pip the Troll, who was known for his "famous lust for pleasure and debauchery, as well as his carnal prowess, and was wanted for lewd behavior on countless planets in the galaxy," which also applies to Chiana. :lech:

Pip is a character in Moby Dick. MB's Pip has been compared to King Lear's fool. Ben is an avid Shakespeare fan (it's what really threw him into acting) so I can see him making the connection. He does mention MB in at least one interview.
The script called for Ben to call Chi Squirt. He adlibbed Pip on the spot during the scene.

I always thought it was because she is black and white, like a "pip" on a dice.:D

I thought it was a number of things in combination:
1) An AFFECTIONATE term of "pip squeak" referring to ones younger sibling;
2) Shakespearan reference;
3) Because of Gigi's accent, Ben elected to say that like the British say "Pip, pip, cherioo."
Whatever the origin of the nickname, it is like I said, affectionately used, and not in a derogatory manner. She is like his kid sister or something.

I agree, I think this is what he means when Crichton calls Chiana pip.
And thx Lyli for posting this. I'm a big fan of Farscape and Gigi Edgley since I first saw Farscape at the beginning of it's forth season. And this was a question I have been wondering about.
