View Full Version : I have ALL the Farscape DVDs, should I get the Starburst Editions?

This has been bothering me for awhile. I have a $5 off certificate for Best Buy, which would cut a nice chunk out of the price of the set.

But I already have the entire series, which I'm not about to sell but these are going out of production and thus become collector's items.

Should I buy the Starburst Editions (there's going to be 12 only) even though I have the "Original Editions?"

I feel I can't vote on this or provide an opinion as I'm facing the same problem. I shelled out a ton of cash for all the DVDs but really want the extra features that are going to be on the Starburst Editions. I'm interested to see what other people will say. However, I have already seen a lot of people mention and suggest that they are, or people could donate their old DVDs to the Library Project.

Might be worth remembering that from everything we've heard, DVD sales play a big role in whether Farscape is seen as a viable franchise - and therefore whether we get more Farscape.

So the more people who buy the Starburst editions as well, the better in that respect.

fortunately I have none of the Farscape DVDs, so I can purchase the Starburst editions guilt free (until they come out with the wormhole versions)

I don't know yet. I already paid a bundle for the entire series. It does sound tempting.

Yes. The price is right and you can always donate your originals to the Library Project. Which is what I am planning to do. :D

I'll buy the new editions as the come out. I want all the extras! Sadly, I'll have to hold on to the existing DVDs as well, since the covers also serve as my autograph collection.

I have them all and I'm getting all the starburst editions. They're really pretty cheap, I'll get to see more extras, AND I'll get to support Farscape. That's why I'm getting them.

Man, I just get Season 4 on DVD, complete my collection, and suddenly i hear just how spectacular these new sets will be. Now I'm a little sad. But not that sad. I did just get S4 after all.

Well I do want to support the cause. So I plan on getting these dvds. Hey anyway they are only 13 bucks at Best Buy. Anyway I will get new features.

I'm really conflicted on this topic. Normally I really really hate it when studios "double-dip" by offering regular editions of movies and then 6, 8, 12 months later put out special editions. But I really love Farscape (duh!) and want the extras that we should have gotten on the first round of releases. Then there's the whole Season sets coming out after the individual releases issue. I'm still a little miffed about that.

But I will probably be buying these new editions when they come out (albeit under protest). And it won't be right away just in case they decide to release Starburst Edition Season Box sets.

Besides, I've still got Burbank to pay for.

i don't think anyone can answer that question but you. that said, do keep in mind that you could donate your set to a library, or you could start using that set as loaners to get folks hooked.

eta: and Nicola already suggested this, so move along folks. nothing to read here.

You can never have enough Farscape, right? Not even an issue for me, I want the new extras, heck I was working on getting R2 DVDs also so I'm hoping I get lots of the R2 extras also.

Heck, I was at the door of Best Buy every tuesday {and sometimes earlier} to get each new set when they came out. Really looking forward to the next set. DK said the Jeremiah Crichton commentary was wild :D

The problem is I was in Best Buy today and they know me as the Farscape guy, and they're already putting one aside for me.

Sigh, the fate's have already decided this one for me....

You paid a hefty price for all the old DVD's then it might be warranted to pay the small price the charge to get the added extras. Besides the more Farscape sales the better the chance we get to see more of Farscape. :D

I bought the volume-by-volume DVD series, including the first season tha released 2-episodes per volume. The MSRP is about $875. Granted, I rarely paid MSRP, generally Best Buy is about 65% MSRP on Farscape volumes, I paid at the very least $570.

My biggest qualm about the DVD releases was the sporacity of their commentaries. When there were commentaries... they were frelling fantastic.

I've pre-ordered PKW as well. ($19.98MSRP, $17.98 on Amazon). Commentaries? I don't know.

The Starburst Editions, or FSE (approprite abreviation?) retails for $24.98 (what the season one volumes of 2 eps retailed for) and is on sale at Best Buy for $12.99. Even if the Best Buy price goes to $15.99, the total to buy the twelve relases of seven episodes (is this right?) is an MSRP of $299.76 or $188.88 over a period of 24 months (?). That's $8 a month... frelling pennies a day.

Sure... I'll have to justify to my wife why I'm buying Farscape episodes that I already own and have spent years collecting (and have devoted a DVD organizer to and have bult a small shrine to house (j/k about the shrine)). But I think I'm up for the job.

Boils down to... pennies a month, Adam. If I would have known that there would be re-relases of the series with all commentary tracks, I would have waited. That's not true. I would have told people that I was waiting and snuck out and bought them anyway, but it's the principle tha counts.

Buy them. And they will come.

I also just completed my collection of the series (recently adding seasons 3&4 to 1&2.) I think I'll just wait for these wormhole versions ;) Maybe someone will put up transcripts for the new commentaries.

it would be nice if ADV released all of the commentaries and extras, from the starburst editions, on separate dvds for those of us who already shelled out the bigs bucks to purchase the originals.

Does anybody know the specific on the "extras" included in the Starburst Editions and how they compare (or not) with what's already out there?

the Starburst Edition is a new special edition release with everything that was on the original Farscape DVDs from ADV Films, plus quite a few new extras. As of tonight, there are 14 exclusive, new commentaries across the entire series with various combinations of Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Rockne O’Bannon, and David Kemper. (We may do a few more before all is said and done.) And there are several new documentary-style interviews. There’s a great interview with Brian Henson on the first set. We’re also getting some of the commentaries that have been on the international releases. There will be more extras added to the list soon. I’ve been working very actively to acquire as many of the international commentaries and extras as I can. I’ve been in touch with Guy Gross, who did the music for Seasons 2-4 and the PK Wars, about doing some special features about music. I’m also working closely with the great folks at the Jim Henson Company to access as much unreleased material as we can find.

Pretty much says it all to me! :aok:

I don't have the disc yet but im almost positive there wasn't meant to be a commentary for that episode. There were supposed to be 6 commentaries spread over the first 7 episodes. I also believe these are the same commentaries on the "older" dvd's. No new commentaries on this volume but should be some on the next volume.

The inlay clearly states that there is commentary for PKTG. And as it also states who the commentary is supposed to be made by (Ben Browder and Claudia Black), I would say that it's not likely to be a misprint. If anyone else has any information regarding this anomaly, I would be very grateful if they could share it.

Again I can't say for sure but I'm guessing its a missprint as the back of the dvd doesn't indicate there is a commentary for this episode and ADV in its press release said there was going to be 6 commentaries on this volume. Hopefully i'm wrong and there is one though.

I dunno what I'm gonna do...

I think I'll buy one or two for a local library - and hopefully I can crack one open and watch the extras before I hand over (depends on library). I guess I will buy the FSE's but like MS sayz - I too would like to wait for SE boxsets.

It's not that you don't have everything in terms of episodes, it's that they're re-releasing everything with new extras (ie commentaries).

I agree that it would be good just to release the new "extras" as their own set so I wouldn't have to buy more DVDs...

Didn't it say somewhere that ADV would be issuing boxes eventually?

hey, anyone know how long its going to take to get the next few dvd's out? not sure if they set a time on when they were or if we just had to wait and watch for it. first time buying the whole series now and not sure if i can handle waiting for all of the starburst or if i will just go out and buy the sets. lol

FYI, I just got a fantastic price on the first Starburst. Went on Best Buy on line. It was 12.99. And then I got them to send it to a local store which saved on shipping and handling. Then I used 5.00 Best Buy bucks from the Micky D's Monopoly game. I paid DVD+S&P+Tax=9.00

I just have season one, So it's a pretty good idea to get the starburst editions for me.

I thought that what Brian Henson had to say was well worth the price. I'm happy to get this set, which will now be my loaner set. I like loading up 5 DVDs in my player and having a personal Farscape Viewing Party without having to get up from the couch each time I switch disks. The new Starburst set would require me to keep flipping disks. Besides, it's easier and sneakier to loan out a set with that many episodes on it. You give your "target" one innocent looking package, and they find themselves having to watch SEVEN episodes, whereas in the past, for one package they only got to see two - four, or maybe five.
