Every semester there is a ritual for students here. we get up at 5 am one day a semester and play the pressure game, as we try to get ourselves registered for classes next semester. we've got to accumulate credit hours of course and right now i'm looking at 18 hours if i get everything i want. i just took a brief 5 to 8 minute nap and i have been slightly recharged. both my roomates are asleep and our room is toasty and that is making me tired. sigh.

in about 10 minutes sophomores all across our campus will be waking up to attempt to register. i hope most of them stay asleep so i can register all my classes. and then the server crashes and we don't get back in until about 8 am.

hmm, I did all my priority registration last month, at 2PM. Then I did all my regular registration on the computer

My son is going through that now. I hope he gets to finish the semester as he is in the National Guard.

 Boy.....times have changed!!!! When I was in college (in the Dark Ages), we had to physically walk from building to building all over campus and wait in line and HOPE there were still openings in the class you wanted!!!

*We also had to walk uphill, in the snow....with no shoes...LOL! :snicker:

Good luck everyone!!! :aok:

That's how it was when I was in college, too, Girlie...and that was last year!

When I was in college they registered us on the first day for every class for every year, that way we got the classes we needed. We never had to run around :dunno:

Wow. It's been a while since I had to worry about not getting into a class (the benefits of upperclassmenship and grad student status, I guess). I don't ever remember not being able to get something I wanted. Even as a freshman or a sophomore.

And I just wanted to add - 18 credits?!? are you nuts?

IF you don't take at least two semesters of 18 credits, you'll never graduate on time. My senior year I had 21 and 19. In addition to sophomore year with 17 one semester.

18 is nothing. i had 15 last semester and i was dealing with really just one extremely hard class i found out i have a D in. i'm bordering on a C though, so if i keep at it and get semi-decent grades i should make a C. 18 hours isn't much at all. it'd boost me up in GPA, and they're classes i know i can pass without extreme stress. i have 2 psych classes, 1 writing class, and a world literature class that stick out in my mind.

i finished my registering, and i have 16 credits now because the other 2 were from a class that i forgot to check prerequisites for. i needed a science class before taking the one i wanted to take, so oops. i have 16 hours, and if i add on another class (i wanted to add government) then it'd boost me up to 19 and then i'd have to not only get permission to have that many, but i would also have to pay for an extra credit hour. at my college it's a flat fee for 12 to 18 hours.

i'm a crammer...i like getting a lot of things in, and i like having a lot of work, though the stress that builds up isn't so healthy.

Aye, Lassy, that twas the way I enjoyed it. Even did 21 hours one semester. One of those classes was Dynamics. Sure, you watch things in 3-D, but have you ever tried writing and analyzing the math equations to describe their motion through space?
Downside of the semester was that all the finals were scheduled within two days. Thus, the dain bramage.

all of our finals are always scheduled in one whole week..it makes things less stressful.

I feel old... :( ;)

My first two semesters, we did the "go there in person" thing. Truth be told, I was doing so badly/giving up hope so much, I totally let registration for 2nd semester pass without even knowing that I was missing it. My no good advisor, who I saw three times a week, also totally ignored the fact that I hadn't been to his office. I didn't realize what I had missed, until I was home on Thanksgiving and had a chance to really look at all the mail. It took a lot of fancy footwork, some crying and some good old fashioned begging to get myself into the classes I needed.

We started a computer based system not long after that.

today i passed the registrar's office, and there was a long stream of people out of the office doors. they were all holding forms and they were waiting for their turn to get into classes they needed. i scoffed at them. i had mine by 8 am. it only took 2 hours.

Ah, yes. I remember that one, too. Campus policy was that no students were to have more than 3 tests in two consecutive times. Enigineering students were the exception to the rule. But then, aren't we always ;)

why oh why do they always assign things over breaks? i have a massive final project for my communications class due the monday i get back from break, and then i have a massive paper due the day after!

yup. remember that one, too. It's so the entire syllabus can be squeezed into the semester. Actually, I never knew the reason for such long intra-semester breaks.

by the by, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic, but you will be in a calendar soon, yes?

I always looked at it as, nobody cares how long it took to get your degree, just how well you did in your classes. And even then, after your first job, nobody cares about your GPA. I took an extra year, but I also took some interesting classes I didn't need for my degree, and graduated with extra credits. I never took more than 16 hours. And that was pushing it. I am awed at those of you who can take so much and still keep your sanity! My grades would have been awful if I did that. And I would have been very unhappy.

well, my thought process is that if i get out in 4 years (they put us all comms students in 5 year programs because they figure we'll take 5) it'll get me out fasther, and then i'll go straight into masters degree program. and then after that perhaps a PhD for psychology.

I've only got 13 hours. My parents say that I must have at least 15 hours each semester and graduate by the end of next spring (2006) Or they stop paying.

So that means I only have room for classes I need. but right now I have one class that my advisor told me I don't need, so I have to find two more classes. Un fortunatley the stuff I need is either full, conflicting with what I already have, or not being offered. I have to take 4 semesters of a language and I only have 3 full semester left, and the begining classes aren't offered in the spring. ARGH!

The stuff I want I can't take. The stuff I need I can't get.

Yes. You are. Plus, it's cool that you are already thinking forward to post-graduate degrees. You go girl.

college was never an option for me. i had to go to college. it was where i wanted to be. i dreamed about it. and i used to read my mom's college psych book when i was a kid. how dorky!

I was going to post something about fears of burning out, but it looked kind of condescending, so I decided against it. Do you have a plan for what kind of program you want to get into? Figuring that out now will really save you headaches later on. I wish I had had a clearer picture of where I wanted to go. Perhaps I would have pushed harder to get finished on time too then :)

i want to get a masters in journalism. and while i'm working or at least trying to get a career started i am going to perhaps pursue a PhD in psychology. it would certainly help. or perhaps a masters in both to begin.

i work well under pressure. i thrive on deadlines, which i guess makes me the perfect journalist type. i know i won't burn out because i am doing things i love and that i am fascinated by. i can very quickly determine what kind of motivation i would need in order to do well in a class. other times i know that the only way to go is to feel your way around and find your niche.

I'm only taking 18 hrs this time around, since I'm working full-time. It was all I had left that was required, but I wanted to take an extra psych course. Plus, this time of year is pretty busy for me anyway, with year-end stuff starting at work. I can register online early usually, so I don't have much trouble getting in classes anymore. My advisor asked me today what 4-year I was planning on attending next. I almost said, "How about none?!" but I didn't figure that was the answer she was looking for. Frankly, I don't give a crap about going to school anymore. I have a job I like, I don't have any plans for moving anytime soon, and I would like a day without homework. Money means next to nothing to me, so worrying about a career making the big bucks isn't exactly on my agenda anyway. Now a trip to Jamaica on the money I would have spent on classes....

Question about registering, why such long lineups? Isn't your Universities registration done by registration appointments? (in person or online)

Yes, it is just like that...on paper.
