I've got some questions for someone who may know something about comic books and their rarity/cost/etc.

This past weekend, my husband was looking through some old stuff at his grandparent's house, and found some comic books. There were quite a few of them. All of them are in great condition.. Some are still in the plastic with the cardboard backing, some without the backing and some just stacked up. None of them show any major signs of damage except for some yellowing of the pages. I can give ya a list of what he's found so far. He said there may be some others, but he was going to have to go back and look.

The ones he has so far:

Spider-Man Fearful Symmetry: Kraven's Last Hunt (complete 6-part volume in hardback/color)

Batman Versus Predator -- 1 and 2 of 3

Spawn #1

Cry for Dawn -- Volume 1, 3rd Printing and Volume 2, 2nd Printing

Fright Night: The Resurrection of Dracula -- with 3D glasses included

The Punisher: Back to School Special #1

Batman: Shadow of the Bat -- The Last Arkham #4

Batman: The Killing Joke

Avengers: Alternate Visions (with copper, embossed front)

Midnight Sons Unlimited #1

William Shatner's Tek World: Moon Kill #6

X-Factor #8

X-Force #18 and #86

X-O: ManOWar #6, 14 and 15

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1

Blood and Thunder: The Warlock Chronicles #7

SpiderMan #281

SpiderMan: Trial By Jury, The Fateful Finale #385

X-Men #17, 297 and 299

Marvel Comics Presents Wolverine #125

Wolverine #66

X-Force #30

What If.... Barbara Ketch had become Ghost Rider (#45) and Cable had destroyed the X-Men (#46)

Iron Man 48 Page Anniversary Special #288 and #299

Star Trek: The Gods be with the Peacemaker--for today he must die! #55

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie

Okay.. so that's all of them for right now. He also has the Death Of Superman that came out still in plastic with cardboard backing, but he's gonna give that to our son when he gets older.

Does anyone know anything about these? Are they useless or priceless? I have absolutely NO IDEA about comic books, so I"m trusting ya'll to give me some good advice here on these!!! And thanks!!

I'd keep Kraven's Last Hunt, Killing Joke (one of the best Batman stories), and maybe Spawn #1. You can find most of the others in 25 cent bins.

There is a mag that comes out (monthly I think) you can get it at the bookstore in the mag section. That has the most up-to-date pricing on comics.

I cant for the life of me remember what the heck its called though. Overstreet or Wizard - I think. I had a copy and threw it away a couple of weeks ago.

I know Overstreet has a thick book that they put out once a year.

But off the top of my head Spawn #1 isnt much more than $20 if its even that.

Mazinkaiser

Wizard is the monthly but they don't have much of a guide anymore, for a complete price guide go with Overstreet.

Those are mostly early to mid 90's books. when the market was flooded with speculators who destroyed baseball card collecting before nearly destroying the comic book market. very mass marketed books. If you have books from the 60's, 70's or 80's; they are worth more money... the others are quarter bins or under $1 bin books.

X-Men #17, 297 and 299

X-MEN 17?!?!? Like Uncanny X-Men 17?!?!? Like the ORIGINAL SERIES from the 70s!?!?!? If that's what it is, KEEP THAT!!!! Basically, it's value could easily buy all the rest and plenty besides that! If it's the 90s version, it's still worth something, but I couldn't give you a good idea of what.

grinner
11-15-2004, 02:22 PM
No, that is probably from the second title... when the name of Uncanny came back to the X-Men and they started a new series... when the team was first split up.

By the way, I do have every X-Men title from issue 42 on thru 329... :)

I suggest keeping them all in excellent condition. Bag them and board them. Some are worth more than others but no reason not to protect them all. The Kraven's Last Hunt hardcover sounds very valuable. Also, which copy of Death of Superman is it? If it isn't a reprint, then it is definitely worth something.

Even first run, with the armband, aren't worth too much if I remember correctly.

Yes, that story arc was WAYYYYYYY overprinted, so it is next to worthless. However, I would keep them all. Something to give to your son when he gets older. I have a huge collection of comics, several 1000's of dollars worth.

Also, I would check to see what version of Spawn #1 that is(there were different versions made when it first came out, in various rarities). Image liked to(and still does) do that(make lots of different covers so that collectors would have to buy multiple copies). Darkness #11 had ELEVEN DIFFERENT COVERS for crying out loud!

Wizard has comic prices in it(for a lot of the main comic titles, but I would go for the Overstreet Price Guide for a more in-depth guide, one that might have the lesser known titles in it.

I hope that this helps a little, Kathleen.

If you need more information on comic books, feel free to send me a PM. :)

something like... 10 million copies of the first run of the Death of Superman... the speculators destroyed the market and it is only in the last few years that things have gotten better...

I want Spawn #1. Can I buy that off you?

...and i'd consider the Batman vs. Predator, since i'm a Predator fan. Gotta love aliens that have cool tech and kill things

I once got into a discussion with another student in my marketing class regarding the value of "The Death of Superman". This guy actually told the class it would be so very valuable cause it involved the death of a major character. But what people forget, is that if everyone has a copy plus some, then who do you sell your copies to for a profit. Everyone has one, no one wants one. Zip on the price ever going up. Not to mention, Superman isn't dead.

For speculating, it is the weird characters, new artists and plotlines that cause the title values to go up. GI Joe #1 is less than #2. They printed more #1 and then #2 only hit specialty shops, so it ended up being harder to get (or so I'm told). The new writers and artists are the ones to watch. They come along and are put on books that get little fanfare. Then boom, six months to a year later, everyone realizes how great they are at what they do, and a mad scramble for back issues begins.

What I really hated is the printing of 5 or 6 different covers for the same comic book, trying to dupe people into getting one of every cover (cause you never know which one will be the one to go up in price.) Blech! Or killing a character, building it up to increase sales, only to bring them back one year later.

The prides of my collections are usually not that valuable, but I got them for great prices. Batman Annual #1, Grendal (B&W) #1 & #2, Batman with art by Marshall Rogers and my old Action LSH issues.

The Marshall Rogers Batman run is one of my favorites. :D Kathleen, which Batman vs. Predator mini do you have? I believe there were three of them.

Ah yes. They did that with the Spiderman re-release in the 90's. There were gold, platinum (or silver) and color covers.
I dont think Spawn did the covers thing, if they did, I never got the other covers.
On a related note, did anyone ever meet Todd McFarlane? I was wondering if anyone else thought he was ignorant, or if it was just me.

And I believe they also did it with X-Force (or X-Factor, now I cant remember), a different character per cover plus trading cards as well.

Oh, and then there's the crossing over stuff. Again, I remember X-Force which had crossovers in like 5 different books.

Now I know why I stopped collecting. I could drop $100 easily in a comic book store back in the day. :)

I'd have to check to see which X-Men #17 year version I have. It's one of the "older" ones, I know that.

Maz.. I have #'s 1 and 2 of the Batman vs. Predator of the 3. Hubby is going to see if he can find the 3rd one in the stuff he was looking in over the weekend.

Also, I'll have to ask about selling the Spawn comic. I don't know how eager or un-eager hubby is about selling them right now.

One other thing, why is Batman not worth anything anymore? For instance, the Batman: Shadow of the Bat #4 is of the original DC Comics. I thought that meant something.

Please forgive me for showing my gross ignorance in this subject. :)

Mazinkaiser

Shadow of the Bat came out in 1992, its not one of the classic Batman comics.

I order my comics from a store in Florida. The owner says he enjoys looking for my requests, cause I've got a strange list. I've sent him to cons looking for Swing With Scooter, Angel and the Ape and ...jeez, I've forgotten the name, misfit superheroes with Dumb Bunny and White Feather.... Doh!

I do like the retro sixties stuff. Too funny. :lol Those old Tru Romance or Modern Romance are pretty funny as well. Great for a laugh. :D

There is a Batman series, I believe the Dark Knight series, that is worth some money.
I have some of them (or maybe all, I dont know). But they were out in the 90's I believe.

I really need to go look at my comic books instead of just making uneducated guesses. :lol

I have some Anne Rice inspired comic books. Have the entire Interview with the Vampire series and most of The Vampire Lestat - they might be worth something, though it could have been that they were more expensive when the movie was coming out.

Damn! $3.00 for a comic! Glad I dont do the comic thing anymore, I'd be poor, but surrounded by comic books. :)

You got that right! And, to be honest, not all of them are worth collecting anyway. Some of the story lines and artwork of the last decade have left a lot to be desired. It was the completist in me that made me keep buying them. I've since learned to fill my comic appetite with better written and better drawn indie books (really liked Elfquest [the original B&W - not Marvel's reprints] and Bone). Or I search out books by a particular writer or artist that I like, like Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis ... to name but a few. There are a lot of good ones out there.

I picked up a few of the Ultimate TPB's a bit back, and that is a fantastic way to catch-up on the story without dropping some major change. It looked like Marvel was the only publisher to go that route.

I forgot to mention Ambush Bug. Not his comics, but his guest appearances. The one where he hops on Supermans back and hitches a ride to the future and meet the Legion of Substitute Superheroes is very funny.

Crap! How many times can they re-invent the wheel?
As many times as we keep buying it. It saves them the time and inconvenience of actually coming up with an original story.

they just did a Legion re-boot in 1999 after "Legion Lost". That was a great story, but I think they're ignoring everything that happened before for the new series.

That is one of the many reasons I got out of comics. Endless re-telling and re-working of the same stories.

The biggest reason, though is this:

When I got into comics, you could pick up any issue of any title and jump right into the story.
When I finally gave up, it was because you couln't follow a story in one comic without buying the other 10 titles about those characters and cross-referencing. X-men was the worst of the bunch at this.

Mazinkaiser
02-17-2005, 02:56 PM
Now every Marvel title is like that. Every story (or arc, as they call it) is 3-6 issues. Then a couple of weeks after the story ends, the trade come out.

DRD2001

I don't mind a good re-telling. John Byrne was great at that. Perez too. But they'll stop mid-story, scrap it all and then start over again and again and again.

Oh yeah, that cross over title crap was annoying as heck. X-Men definately wins the ticket on that. I'm ticked about the new LSH now. Of course, it could be worse. I hate it when they get some new hack writer who gets a masochistic kick out of destroying, corrupting and perverting favorite characters who've been around and popular for decades.

Marvel just restarted Black Panther, haven't read it yet myself. Seems the writer erased BP's entire past, meaning he was never an Avenger and the great run by Christopher Priest never happened.

That is why getting old series can be a good thing. Camelot 3000 will remain Camelot 3000.

I deeply regret that when I moved back from Japan my senior year of high school my Uncanny X-Men Collection got waterlogged. I think about it today and realize that issue #74 alone could have saved me a month's rent.

These days it's all about The Transmetropolitan and Sin City stuff for me.

Well anything Warren Ellis or Frank Miller write honestly.

DRD2001
02-17-2005, 05:37 PM
Haven't read those. I do have a lot of Frank Miller's earlier stuff. Nice to know people still like his work. Too often writers and artists end up as a "flavor of the month".

With the multiple titles thing. I don't mind. I only get one cover anyway. I've got the last Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes. Each issue had four diffent covors by various artists, then two or three limited run covers. I haven't bought the newer Shop Till You drop ones, and am still looking for the original Army of Darkness series that came out after the movie, where Ash dies.

Astonishing X-men is really good. I love Wedon's stuff. Fray was awesome. But then, Joss is about story and character. Which seems to be MIA in a lot of mainstream books these days.

Whedon's stuff is wonderful. Just finished issue 8 last night. Weird stuff is going on.

I liked Spider-Ham too.
OMG I had that! I thought I was the only one who knew!

I've only gotten back into comics in the recent years, bying TPBs when I can. Soo many I need and want. Buying issues with much scutiney. I've got the (unfortunatley) now ended Transfomers War Within series. All three volumes,, up to now when Dreamwave died. :cry2: I'll never know what happens.

It took forever to get the first series. I finally found it on Ebay with the preview issue, and a bonus limited edition Optimus transforming hologram covor of issue 1 which I'm not touching.

yeah, crossgen had some really good comics. Scion, Meridian, Sojourn, Route 666. I believe Disney Co bought the pieces for almost nothing.
(best comic I ever read: Mars by First Comics in the 80s)

Ahh, Transmetropolitan. Despite recently becoming ridiculously hard to come by, one of the most best things i've read in many years(and not just in comics). Transmet, Lucifer, and Fables have been the things holding my interest lately.

Shoot, after reading this thread, I'm motivated to try to organize my comics again. But that is just another pipe dream. I won't happen. It never does. I get half way into one box and start reading the comics and never finish the work.

DRD2001

It is a daunting task. I generally have "finished" boxes, which have completed series and such in them and then I have "on going" boxes, since I keep adding to them every month.

Mine are in such a sorry state, cause my apartment flooded... TWICE!! All the comics had to be taken out of bags to prevent mold. Others had pin holes and received damage. They've never been in order since. I really should do something. Now that I've got a computer and can do a data base on quality, quantity, artist, writer and other specifics.

Question...

Did any of you keep buying a tittle just to complete your collection, even though the quality of the book was down?

well, when DC prevents adventurous writers like John Ostrander from working their magics and instead insist on corporate homogenized storylines... this is what you get.

If I knew it was ending soon, then I would. But if it just went downhill (changed characters, writers or artists) and I lost all interest, then I might continue to an "even" number and then stop. For instance, if by Alpha Flight #91 I was sick of it, I would probably hang on until issue #100. If I found out later that it was cancelled at issue #107, I'll go back and get those issues to fill out the run. But usually if the series is that bad, I can get them cheap at cons in the quarter box.

quarter bins are nice... but you sometimes have to worry about the condition of the books.Considering my chances of selling my books before I die, I don't think quality will be an issue. But there is a vendor who boards and bags everything who goes to Heroes con regularly and I raid his stuff routinely. Plus, being a woman, I usually get good bargins on top of everything to boot.

I think it's out. Late January.

"Phoenix in Ascension," part 3 of 3. The magnum opus Rising Stars reaches its fiery conclusion. After 23 issues of heroism and drama, Poet, the last of the remaining superpowered "Specials," makes the ultimate sacrifice--one that will change both our world...and others. Plus, a bonus Rising Stars Gallery with past covers and new pin-ups.
