View Full Version : Aristotle's Theories about Farscape Message Boards

stay with me here. i learned this a few weeks ago in my communication theory class. so Aristotle theorized that there are three things people look to. ethos, logos, and pathos. ethos is your character, your morals. logos is logic, your know-how and expertise, and pathos is based on emotional appeals. Aristotle decided that most people are persuaded most by the Ethos, the moral judgment. in Greek society, they knew that you were reliable with information if you were a reliable individual. If they could trust you, they could trust your information and know-how. if they did not know you or did not trust you, then your credibility is gone.

This is similar to what many of us here experience. In OT-TV/Movieville, TechnoBoy posted about a coupon for deepdiscountdvd.com. Say a new member comes onto the board, promoting the same coupon. we would be less inclined to just believe it right off the bat, wouldn't we? we would go check out the website itself and see if it's really true. I know i was one of those people to just believe "hey, that's a great deal" rather than say "i'm not sure if that's real or not" and find out for myself. Because we know each other and can recall board experiences with one another, we have each built up reputable characters for ourselves in this place. some of us have not in certain circles, and certain pockets of people will believe what i have to say...and some will not. but that is the whole idea behind Aristotle's Ethos.

I'M LEARNING!!

Actually AgentSun I think I would check it out to see if it was applicable to me or not, and would have nothing to do with trust, just to see what the unknown factor is.
My choice would based on Pathos, - if something sounds to good to be true it probably is - "For Me", not being pessimistic just a little self protective and also in the Logos, wanting to know where I'm stepping and not just blindly moving forward - and of course just out of curiosity if someone posts a link in a message I almost always click on it just out of natural curiosity and the pleasure of finding things out.

Wow. School's actually doing something...

And I think that perhaps it's a more pure form of what you're talking about..since communication is not influenced so much by real life factors (although many people have met in real life) such as income level, attractiveness, body language, clothing, etc...your reputation and ability to communicate is all you have.

I think I have to recant my previous statement
based on what you said Shipscat and reading the thread on mental health screening (not gonna go there)

AgentSun I have got to say you are right.

I would just naturally assume, being an intellectual with rather eclectic life experiences, (or as Obewon would say the truth being from ones own point of view)
that a conversation would reflect ones own experiences, but they don't, they mostly reflect what someone wants to be, or there familiarity (comfort)

I have been really paying attention to that since you posted this thread.
and I even caught myself doing it.
the expectation or familiarity with someone or something supersedes any experience or intellectual curiosity.
you are right,
good observation AgentSun.
