So, I heard today that over the weekend Sir Bob Geldof pulled together a new group of brit singers to redo the orignal son "Do They Know its Christmas", including Dido, Bono, Chris Martin from Coldplay, Damon Alban from blur, members of The Darkness, Robbie Williams, Snow Patrol, Travis, Thom York from Radiohead, Paul McCartney, and some others. 20 years ago, some of those singers were my favorites, and the funny thing is that I like so many of the singers in this version too. This year the money will go to help the Sudanese refugees living in the Darfur region of Sudan and apparently, it played this morning: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/4015231.stm

The old version is one of my favorite holiday songs... How bout you? :D

Actually, I'm partial to most of TSO's stuff, especially "Old City Bar." On the traditional side, The Drummer Boy is my all-time favorite.

Dean Martin, Nat King Cole singing Christmas carols.
And Carol of the Bells... (if that is what it is called.)

:aok: I'm with you there plus Elvis ;) [I'll have a bluuuue Christmas without you...]

and yes it is called Carol of the Bells... still my favorite. I still remember the parts because I sang in Concert Choir [2nd Bass] in high school [AA State Champions] and the Christmas Concert was the highlight of the year...

I dont know why---but I also have always liked the "Old" version of that Do They Know its Christmas song.
Maybe because I only hear it at Christmas and it doesnt get overplayed all year long.

How could you forget the Dogs barking Jingle Bells--a true classic!!!! ;)

"John Lennon - Happy Christmas" is my favorite. One of the few christmas songs that I still like after listening to it hundreds of times in a four week timespan. Then there's also Queen's "Thank God it's Christmas" that ranks high on my list.

There's a Christmas song by Queen. I hear it every year but I always forget the name of it.

Bing Crosby usually makes me get into the spirit, so does the music from the animated "Snowman". Faurč's Requiem is to me also very much Christmas. A more recent one is Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Power of Love".

...and for a reason I don't know I always read Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame every year...

And Carol of the Bells... (if that is what it is called.)Caroll of Bells is, I think, an american classic......but not well known over here in the UK....but I heard it on a few TV programs and thought I would like that, notably a version on an episode of ER. Could anyone recommend a version (sung) that would be a worthy addition to my yuletide music collection. I like lots of christmas carols cause they just set the scene.

One you hear everywhere is Slade's - "Merry Christmas Everyone", but I prefer "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by Wizzard.

But by the end of christmas day I really like The Pogues feat Kirsty MacColl - "Fairytale of New York".

Not forgetting Python's Christmas in heaven. Have you got Walking in the Air in your collection scrape?

There were two that we sang in choir in middle school, which I haven't heard recorded anywhere ~ "Shepards, Awake!" and "Only a Baby Came." I really enjoyed both of those.

And of course, there's the classic McKenzie Brothers' rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas ... and BEER ... innnnn a tree! :rollin:

I tend to like the obscure ones that most people aren't that familiar with, like burgundian christmas carol, french carols, that kind of thing. And Manheim Steamroller. They can make just about any song fun to listen to.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer

and

Walking Round In Women's Underwear (to the tune of Walking in a Winter Wonderland :P )

Of course Annie Lennox does an awesome version of Walking in a Winter Wonderland too.

Handel's Messiah is always lovely to listen to. Josh Groban's version of O Holy Night is fantabulous. In my college choir, we're singing There Shall a Star From Jacob Come Forth, which I've become rather fond of. But as to a favorite holiday song...can't possibly choose.

I'm silly, I like Elton's "Step into Christmas" and "Run, Run Rudolph" by Bryan Adams. I hardly ever catch them, though...

I'm really fond of most of the traditional well known carols with "The First Noel" being my favorite.

Of lesser known "carols", my favorites are "See Amid The Winter Snow", "In The Bleak Midwinter" and "The Angel Gabriel". Another really nice carol is "The Carol Of The Green Branches", but I've only encountered one recording of it by Emma Kirkby.

Call me crazy, but I like 'Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy' as recorded by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. I can't listen to it enough. Such an unusual combination, and I think well matched.

perhaps you might know what I am looking for.
there was this college choir about 10 years ago I saw on PBS, the only musical compliment with the choir was a drum and hand clapping - it sounded African influenced, tribal and ancient and at the same time cosmic and timeless some of the most powerful Christmas music I ever heard,
absolutely beautiful, I had a tape of it I made and played until it broke 4 years ago, I still don't know the name of the group or the PBS concert show,
I've asked and hunted around with no results.

does anyone know what I am talking about?
