View Full Version : What is your dream job?

In an effort to figure out what I want to do for a living, I thought I'd pose the question, "what is your dream job?"
Anything works. I'm open to pretty much any career...legal, that is. ;)

But, if that market is already full, I've wondered about being a State Highway employee. Wear a hard hat and safety vest... slap on the headphones, and just swing the weedeater back and forth until 3:30pm. No one bothers you unless it's lunch, quitting time, or to move to another slice of highway. No one checks to see if you've cut every blade of grass.
Beats the heck out the nightmares about a building collapsing because a weld should've been 1 inch longer or that connection should've had 1 more bolt. Ugh.

I'd love to work on developing new weapons. What can I say, I love to blow things up. :D I really wish there were no need for that, then I would probably say laser applications. I absolutely loved physics and did the optical sensors track for my degree.
Or maybe something in the special effects field. That way I could still blow things up.
Really, I don't have a lot of pent up aggression. There's just something about a good explosion that I just love. :)

In reality, something humanitarian. Like an aid worker. I've always liked helping people.

If the world would be as it should, I would rightfully be a meglomaniacal dictator bent upon world domination. My methods would be simple force of will, coupled with some of those lovely explosions LT Garrix seems to enjoy so much. I would also have a variety of henchmen, goons and the assorted court jester on hand for my amusement. All would be quite fun to watch, as they were left to be devoured by tiny angry aquarium fish..... :D
===
In my make believe world, I settle for controlling the world from the shadows. It is up to the puppet leader to suffer the ill will of the public. He is the one who must listen to the complaints of the goon squad relatives, deal with the potholes and go to the budgetary meetings. My job is to control ALL of the important aspects from behind the scenes, and enjoy the bounty of my ill-gotten gains.
===
I always wanted to be a print reporter. A thoughtless prof stomped on that dream a long time ago, but there are times I still wish that I had told her to shove it and stayed the course.
For some reason, my creativity has been running pretty hot lately. Having all of these ideas really makes me wish I had taken some marketing courses in college. I think, had a found that field, I may have gone a totally different route than I have followed.

I am living my dream job. And for some reason, it's a job no one ever thinks of, they just kinda trip and fall in to it.
I am a Police and Fire dispatcher in a million-plus residential jusridiction. You know that voice at the end of the Fox show "Cops"? The one that says "Copy, 132 and Bush, got 'em at gunpoint"? That's me! Ha!
I have talked a few people out of suicide, sent cops to women being raped, sent ambulances to little old ladies who woke on Sunday morning to find the love of thier lives, thier other half, thier mate of 60 years, dead in bed beside them.
I have realized that there are ALOT more clinically insane people in this lil corner of the Universe than most people suspect.
I get to help people on a nightly basis, sometimes in a way that will change thier lives forever. And it is NEVER, EVER boring!!.

This has been on my mind quite a bit, too. I think I would make an excelent Chief of Staff for a President. Playing video games and writing reviews would be a sweet job, or being a travel writer.

I, unfortunately, have WAY too many dream jobs.
These are the ones that I have done and wouldn't mind going back to
Blacksmith (love working with my hands and making swords is fun too)
Carpenter (more love working with my hands)
Landscaper (its good to get tanned and dirty)
Machinist (love making things out of steel, see blacksmith)
Mechanic (love cars, gas and bruised knuckles, but the wages vs grime factor sucks)
Race Car Driver (there is no adrenaline rush like it - other than street racing, but thats illegal)
Writer (love to create things with my mind)
Map Maker (there are stories everywhere on maps just dying to get out)
These are the jobs I've had that I wouldn't want to go back to
PC Technician (gah... whiny people who break their computers blaming you for it)
IT Manager (gah... more whiny people who break their computers and blame you for it)
PC Store Manager (all of the above plus extra stress)
ISP Owner (all of the above plus more stress and no money)
Commission Sales Person (selling crap you dont believe in for some greedy company)
Jobs I've had that are So So
Computer Network Architect (creation is fun, but the stress and 24/7 on call is no fun)
Programmer (building programs is fun, but often mind numbingly dull at the same time)
Web Designer (more creativity, but honestly not as satisfying as working with hands)
CAD/CAM (there is something about all those lines)
Rock Band (music is fun, trying to make a living at is is not so much fun)
Jobs I want to do
Author (Author being a writer who is published, lol)
Historian (love history, if someone paid me to read musty books I'd be set)
Lumberjack (my brother does it and he really enjoys it)
Politician (I hate politics, but I think I could do a better job)
Radio Talk Show Host (politics without the responisibility, lol)
In the line of the Highway worker above, many delivery jobs aren't too bad. You get a lot of time to yourself, get to listen to tunes in the vehicle and pretty much do your own thing. For about 8 months at one point I was a delivery driver for a Pizza Hut. $2.25/delivery + tips meant I could make as much as $200/day driving around in my car (often with my friends) and listening to tunes while breaking every road law known to man.
But the number 1 Thing that I want to do is to get enough money to retire before 2050 and buy some land in the British Columbian Rockies, build a small log house near a lake and get me some whittling wood and a good knife and maybe a pipe and write boring poetry until I pass away.

A translator, so if I didn't like one of the people, I could translate everything they said into something dirty. That'd be fun. :elol: I wanted to be a chef, but then I discovered that I hate to cook, so I guess that's out. A fireman would be cool, but not a volunteer fireman. They just sit around our town, getting drunk and falling off the trucks. Of course, I'm pathetically weak, so I'd probably tip over with my gear on and fall off a ladder. That would be bad. I wanted to be a carpenter, but then it got cold outside, and well, I'm a pansy. I guess I'll have to stick with the job I have for now, especially since bubblez is first in line for dragon.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut... Well, ok, first I wanted to be Princess Leia (lol I was four when Star Wars came out)... This was back when the space shuttles were new, and, people kept on talking about space travel, going back to the moon or visiting mars (seemed like it was talked about more then...or I just noticed it more) in the near future.
In High School I scaled back the dream to becoming a pilot. I got some heat for saying that in a class once. It was odd. All the girls there were talking about wanting to be doctors, teachers, Lawyers, and such. Guess what they told me? "But, women arn't aloud to become pilots!"
I think I had a WTF look on my face for the rest of that day....partly because someone said I couldn't do something (I never heard you can't do this or that dream by my parents) because I was female and partly because of all people it was a African American female wanting to become a corporate lawyer told me this. Kinda Ironic. lol
I started college off as a Perfessional Pilot major. My instructor thought I was a "natural". If it wasn't for the all the money, on top of the tuition, it cost to fly (err or the seeming eternal bad flying weather, or the military helicopter that flew waaay to close to me and my instructor once) I'd probably would have finished it. Also found out that flying those little trainer planes is a bit boring....not fast enough. ;)
Oh well, I tried! It wasn't a total loss. I bet I could still fly if I had to. I got to co-pilot a open cockpit bi-plane (with a parachute strapped to me), once... and while I was there one of the women grads from Parks College became, I believe, the first female fighter pilot. Take that future lawyer. :;)
After that there was the dream of working in tv somehow. I finished school with a comm. degree, and, worked in the production dept. of a tv station for 3 years. Fun job. The station as in a medium market and even us PA's had to learn how to run almost everything in the department. The pay just sucked. I would have stayed in it longer if I liked the town I was in and didn't meet my hubby down here, moved and stayed home to raise my daughter till she hits school age.
Now I'm in need of a dream tangent again...my little girl is four.
hmmmm....my personality profile (Myers-Briggs INFP) thingy says I'd make a good actor, editor, writer or Counselor (probably not career counselor lol)

What the heck is a Eurofighter?
Nm, found it, I think I've seen that in the odd movie, or maybe its predecessors. If I had a chance in hell of becomming a fighter pilot I'd love to be in the cockpit of an F-22 Raptor. Supersonic stealth flight, invisible radar, and more cool gadgets than a geek in heaven!
The JSF would also be fun as it is a new vertical takeoff jet and ever since I saw the first Harrier I thought that that was the coolest thing I'd ever witnessed.

weren't they enemies at some point? No not really. Different times. But technically Viking culture was pirate-ism.
The Euro-Fighter is one cool jet. They went a totally different direction then America went with the Raptor. It's agility in the air is stunning. The only thing I wonder is if the human body is capable of utilizing it fully. At those speeds the manuvers the plane can do might kill the pilot.

1. science fiction author
2. involved in writing, producing some cult science fiction TV show or movie, maybe with cameo or small recurring appearance (one of the lone gunman was recruited from the production crew of X-Files) -none of this is inconsistent with #1 above.
3. theoretical physicist in the field of quantum gravity or zero point energy
4. astronaut
Oh, wardrobe technician seems to be an up and coming profession, so if Claudia, Raelee or Gigi need help dressing or undressing, I would be more than happy to help with that job. . . . But, if you do it for free, can you still call it a job? Helping beautiful stars dress and undress, its not just a job, its an adventure!
