View Full Version : Ever watch a show/movie just for a person in it?

And let me just say, we're not talking Farscape here (because I KNOW that the ladies here will instantly come on and say BEN!!! :D)
Case in point:
I like to watch Monster Nation on Discovery for Kelly Grant (sadly, I couldn't find a picture of her... the show is a little too new, apparently). She's the dark brunette that ends up being the one that has to test all the stuff that James and Gabrielle build.
Lately, Mythbusters have also had Kari and Scottie, who are good looking women, working on busting myths (though I'm not big on Scottie's arm-load of tattoos)
Which ones do you watch just to see someone that's in it?

The only one I can think of right now is Pitch Black, you probably know why.
Also, after I began watching Farscape I thought about watching Queen of the dammed again, since I couldn't remember the part Claudia played in it. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to do it though.
But I guess it happens all the time, for example, if I am zapping and a channel is aring an old movie, I am more likely to watch if it has Gary Grant or Boggart or some other famous actor.

For tv shows I watch Trading Spaces for Genivive Gorder and Page Davis. Although Gen hasn't really been on this season.
For movies I will watch anything with Nat Portman in it. Before SW she could act. And I will watch movies with Kirsten Dunst just because she is in them.
For non-eyecandy reasons I will watch anything with Johnny Depp in it. I think he is probably one of the best (American*) actors of our time.
*Not to familar with many non-american actors unfortunatly. :(

okay, Pitch Black...
often there are actors who are worth watching in any role /any film
(at least one viewing)
there are several of these actors (the cast of Farscape goes without saying)
Steve Martin, Stacy Keach, Sigourney Weaver, oh boy,
I just can't think who else right now, but there are probably 8 to 10
on my list. But they are actors who, I want to at least see their
performance one time, because that will be worth it -even if the
movie isn't good. (Yeah, Johnny Depp,.... can't think, too busy
thinking about being in Burbank tomorrow.....)
I will pop back and post again when I think of others.....

Well, of course, there was Pitch Black. Anything with Ben, naturally. I also watched an episode of a show I'd never watch normally (Beastmaster) just to see Anthony and Claudia.
Anything with Anthony LaPaglia in it as well.
Hmm..let's see. There was a period where I watched every single movie that starred Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh. Still don't know why.
I'll watch anything created by Joss Whedon or JJ Abrams.
Oh, yes, and I'll watch anything with Scott Bakula in it, which has meant watching some pretty crappy movies...and yet, I still don't mind.

I will watch anything with Viggo Mortensen in it! I found an old movie the other day that had him in it called "Albino Alligators". It also had Gary Sinese & Matt Dillon in it. I thought wow, this should be interesting. BIG mistake!! It was NOT a very good movie. Viggo had slicked back hair, glasses & a high French Canadian accent. After I watched, I had to find another movie with him in it to get this awful vision out of my head!!! This was Sooo not Viggo.
I ended up watching "Return of the King".

Yeah.. basically most of the Alan Rickman movies I wouldn't have watched if he wasn't in them. Most of them are good, a few I wouldn't watch the whole thing again, only Alan's parts coughrobinhood:princeofboringcough

I'll watch anything Bruce Campbell is in. And that means I'll be watching "Man With the Screaming Brain" on skiffy some time next year, as well as "Alien Apocolypse".
I'll also watch just about anything Minnie Driver is in, because, um, great googly moogly she's hot!

Another 'Pitch Black' viewer here.
I don't know if it counts, but I went and purchased 'Memphis Belle' on DVD so I could watch it again and see if I could spot Ben.
Apart from those two films, I'm not aware of any other actors that have persuaded me to watch their films. Usually, I only look at the premise of the film.

One scene, and early in the film. It's the party the night before the mission. Ben is the rookie pilot asking questions with a southern accent. It took me awhile to catch that -- Samati75 helped.

Reasons for watching a movie:
Angelina Jolie (cuz she's just cool)
Johnny Depp
Sean Patrick Flannery (granted, not all have been the best)
Vin Diesel
Anthony Hopkins
Bruce Willis (again with the coolness factor)
Ed Burns (gotta love the sarcasm)
Owen Wilson (hilarious, except for Minus Man :yuck: )
Brad Pitt (just cuz he's Brad Pitt) :thud:
Matthew McConaughey (doesn't really matter what character, to me he's always naked playing bongos) :thud:

Three that I can think of...
Angelina Jolie (she just brings something to the characters that she plays).
Kate Beckinsale
Brad Pitt (yeah, cause he's Brad - I watched Snatch cause of him and was surprised that I ended up liking the movie as a whole)
Keanu Reeves
River Phoenix
More recently - Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler

There are lots and lots of movies or TV shows I will watch just for a particular actor or actress. Bogart, Carry Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Claudette Colbert, Katherine Hepburn....big long list from the old movies. More recent stuff Scot Bakula, Patrick Stewart, Bruce Campbell, Adrea Parker (although I just can't watch her sitcom - a woman who can play such a complicated and deliciously evil character is wasted in stupid fluff), Nana Visitor, Jennete Goldstein, ....lots of others whose names don't immediately spring to mind.
Another favorite thing is to watch some old TV series like McGyver and pick out all the people I've seen and liked in other things. Especially shows from the 50s and 60s and 70s. People tended to be cycled between lots and lots of different shows. I don't think that is as common today - don't know whether that is less loyalty, more actors or more producers so the pool is larger.

I agree with Kate, Hugh and Gerard. I have watched several movies that I knew nothing about because they were in them. You don't realize how many movies they've actually been in before they were well-known!

I actually started watching 'Lost' just because Dominic Monaghan was in it. I'll watch anything with the Farscape cast, of course. And I'll watch something if it has Johnny Depp (watched Nightmare on Elm Street just to see him). I usually don't end up seeing half the movies I say I want to because of actors. Troy is an excellent example. I was going to see it because Orlando Bloom was in it (hotness factor), but ended up only sitting for the end credits to listen to the Josh Groban song (which, incidentally, is another motivation for me going to see movies. AI, anyone?).
*Edited to add: But I did see Pirates of the Caribbean because I had double the motivation (Johnny + Orlando = hotnessē).

I sat through Ghost Ship and chances are good despite its total crapness, I'd do it again...Pitch Black yes, but it would be nice just once to catch the beginning and not accidentally stumble up on it in the middle. Normally I just watch crap because I'm bored, not because there's some actor in it I like, though it usually helps keep my attention a little longer. There's probably few if any actors outside of Farscape I will go to a movie to see or stop channel surfing to watch for five minutes.
I watch LAX for Paul Leyden but now I'm kinda liking the show. Don't care for Heather Locklear though.
Is there something wrong with me if I just don't get the Brad Pitt thing? And I don't remember anything about the song at the end of Troy other than it being vomit inducing.

Yes! It's called "catching some eye candy"!
I'll also watch just about anything Minnie Driver is in, because, um, great googly moogly she's hot!
Digger, did you see her in the Season 5 ep of AbFab about the panic room. It was a riot!
Bubble: Minnie Driver?
Edina: Yea, she's a huge Hollywood star.
Bubble: Well, what's she been in?
Edina: Good...Good...
Patsy: Good Head Hunting.

grinner once posted the pic... somewhere. But even with photographic evidence I just couldn't find him in the movie. :lol He's kinda like 'wheres Waldo' in that movie with thousands of other 'boys'.
Although I don't have a crush on him like Ayurocks ;) , I will watch a movie just for Alan Rickman. He is amazing. And John Cusack. I just love that guy.

Original Sin
Playing God
Tomb Raider 1 (liked 2)
Also, anything with Arnold... because he's f***ing Arnold!

Letsee.... I'll generally watch any movie that has one of these folk in it (be it good or bad - lets face it, they've all made some real stinkers). Many mentioned before:
Angelina Jolie
Johnny Depp
John Cusack
Bruce Campbell (the man is a god)
Edward Norton
Brendan Fraser
Christian Bale
Gerard Butler
Russell Crowe
Bill Murray
Rene Russo
Linda Hamilton
Sandra Bullock (I can't help it. I like her.)
Kevin Spacey
Jodie Foster
Michelle Pfeiffer
Kurt Russell
Keanu Reeves
Franka Potente
Sean Connery
Monica Potter
the list can go on and on. And there are many movies that I've watched just because there was someone in it that intrigued me at the time or I really like the director. A lot of the time, though, the story has to peak my interest before I'll give it a go (Brad Pitt movies apply here)
And any classic movie that has Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Bogart, Kate Hepburn or Audrey Hepburn I've seen multiple times.

I never saw it. I heard about it, though. I've never seen Ab Fab.
Minnie Driver played herself in the ep and she portrayed herself as shallow, vain and in desire of free designer clothing! It was very funny.
If you like Minnie Driver, you should rent season 5 and watch that ep. It's typical AbFab - mean and funny! There's also an ep with Kristen Scott Thomas from season 5. A good one too.

I have 4 criteria for watching a movie/TV show
Actor I know/like
Director/Producer/Production House I know/like
Genre I like
Eye Candy
I'll watch anything by the greats, Spielburg, Lucas, Jackson, the guy who did evil dead (can never remember his name). Anything in the Whedonverse and other similar things.
For actors I'd say that every actor listed already is good nuff for me, though I think a few important ones have been missed
Harrison Ford
Sean Connery
Arnold
Cathrine Zeta Jones
Kate Hudson
Kate Winslet
Kurt Russel
just to name a few... Pretty much any A list and most of the B list actors are enough to get me to watch a movie.
I'll also watch anything that is Scifi/Fantasy/Action/Horor that looks to be at least B quality
And just about any movie that has an Eye Candy factor in it will do as well. I usually can't be bothered to watch a TV series for eye candy, since if I am in the mood for cheap trash and momentary entertainment a movie is better than trying to get a season of some dumb show in to satisfy me.
I'm probably Hollywood's favorite target. Since to me just about every storyline seems contrived and full of plot holes (even Farscape is swiss cheese to the discerning mind) I choose not to look for errors/lameness in anything and so all things are good and satisfying to me, lol.
