Owens Apologizes for Role in 'MNF' Skit

By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer

PHILADELPHIA - Terrell Owens apologized Thursday to anyone offended by his role in a steamy segment with actress Nicollette Sheridan for the intro to "Monday Night Football."

"I felt like it was clean, the organization felt like it was a clean skit and I think it just really got taken out of context with a lot of people and I apologize for that," Owens said. "Personally I didn't think it would have offended anyone and, if it did, I apologize."

ABC and the Eagles also apologized this week, with the team saying they wished the segment "hadn't aired."

The opening, which has generated complaints to ABC and the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites), showed Sheridan wearing only a towel and provocatively asking Owens to skip the game for her as the two stood alone in a locker room. She drops the towel and jumps into Owens' arms.

Owens had no idea the intro would create such a backlash.

"I thought it was a fun skit and that was it," Owens said.

Owens, a flashy player known for his outrageous touchdown celebrations, seemed to believe the skit was generating controversy because of his participation, not because of simulated nudity.

"Anything I get involved with, I'm obviously a target," he said. "It happened."

Reaction has ranged from amusement to anger. Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy found it racially offensive; Owens is black and Sheridan is white.

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb wasn't quite as vocal, saying he didn't find the segment offensive and believed people were overreacting. Michael Powell, chairman of the FCC (news - web sites), questioned ABC's judgment in airing the scene.

When asked if he was shocked the story was making the front page of newspapers around the country, Owens quipped, "I always make the front page."

anyone else think that Tony Dungy is an idiot?

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy found it racially offensive; Owens is black and Sheridan is white.

i'm not sure what he is implying by the term "racially offensive" but i'm not sure why he finds it offensive just because Sheridan is white. she's a part of Desperate Housewives and that was the tie-in from ABC. that they would have the actors from that show appearning in Monday Night Football. it's not ABC's fault that Sheridan happens to be white. if he got offended because owens, being black, should have had a black girl in his arms, then ABC would have absolutely no reason for having a skit of the sort. the point was that they linked it to a show airing on ABC, to promote it.

and Owens seems to be way too full of himself. i think most people got upset because of the implied nudity, rather than the fact that he participated.

Wow! What is it with everybody walking on eggshells regarding content on television(directed at the people that call in to complain)?

It was NOT that bad for crying out loud.

I guess we have Janet Jackson and Justin Timbercrap to blame for all this. ;)

You know, I've heard bits and pieces about this but haven't actually seen the entirety of the so called offensive bit. What I did see looked like nothing. I don't get people. If the part that I saw was the "offensive" part, then these people must have conniption fits when a show like Will & Grace (GAY MEN?!!?!? OH MY GOD!!!) or the like airs

I'm sure that there are people that complain about Will and Grace for just that reason.

The only "shows" that I wish would forever disappear would be RealityTV. :grumpy:

Their problem is that they bended to the pressure of people calling in and now people arent going to stop.

Some people just complain for the sake of complaining. If you dont like whats on the TV, change the channel.

I'd be more worried (in terms of children watching) about the close-ups of the players cursing (you cant hear them, but you can easily read lips) than with that little intro.

It's a sign of the times, unfortunately. People would rather complain, as it's a lot easier to do. :(

:lol G_S!

So because of Kobe's screw-up (no pun intended), some people thought it was "insensitive" - how stupid.

Bill Parcels or Andy Reid would have probably collapsed from a heart attack had Nicolette jumped into their arms. :D

Bill Parcels would at least have gone out with a smile for the first time in his Coaching career. :D

Does you really think ABC is sorry? I bet Housewive's audience is for the most part women, MNF has the 18-34 males. Housewives is one of their highest rated shows, but this weeks ratings are gonna be huge. ABC knows what its doing.

I can't wait to see ABC's cross-promotion for "Lost". They should do it the next time the Baltimore Ravens are on MNF. Jamal Lewis can share his cocaine with Charlie, and Ray Lewis can compare knives with Locke. :rollin:

I kind of liked what Jim Rome had to say on this:

People have blown this so out of proportion. I mean, cripes, how many half naked women are there at those games running around with pom poms on the sidelines? Gimme a break.

Or Terrell Owens could guest star on Lost. For some strange reason, his character gets killed in the first minute of the episode. Nobody cares, though, and the episode shifts to another plot device. :D

Poor Owens is crushed and decides to try to develop a modicum of humility in real life. ;)

Don't think that will ever happen! He was humble early in his career but then he sure kicked it into gear. I like arrogant players! Deion, TO, Ray Lewis, all arogant as hell! It ain't cocky if you can talk and back it up.

He takes a bit too far sometimes, I think. ;)

Did you see that battle-royale in that NBA game the other night? Holy crap!
