It's just sort of weird. It seems to me that he started calling him that out of nowhere.

Perhaps it's just one of those nick-names that pop out of thin air... as an ironic name for Rygel since he's complaining all the time. Poking fun, probably.

I'd love to know why he calls him "Buckwheat".

If you know who Buckwheat was and you look at the eyebrows, that ones pretty easy. (assuming you know what the Little Rascals were).
As for Sparky, I say cause its funny. Good enough reason for me.

Perhaps it's a thing like with him calling Chiana 'Pip'... something happened behind-the-scenes and they just decided to add it into the dialogue

You know, I always thought it was because it was a pet's name, like fluffy, (which he does call him) or Spot or something.

That was my feeling, as well. Doesn't he also use "Sparky" in Lava's A Many Splendored Thing when he does the "You found my dog!" bit on the thugs they think are the Tarkan freedom fighters?

Yeah, he tells them that Rygel's his dog and that Noranti is just a crazy old woman (not much of a stretch). Good stuff, good stuff

I was pretty sure they exploded after he started calling him Sparky
(Wheee! Post #100 for me :boogie: BOOGIE OOGIE WOOGIE!)
Isn't Sparky the Fire Dog a sort of cartoon logo dalmation of the National Fire Protection Association? Spanky was another character on The Little Rascals (originally "Our Gang", then "The Little Rascals") as was Buckwheat. They were mischievous kids.

And buckwheat had the greatest hairdo of all time. It's like watching "Don King - The Early Years"
It's one of John Crichton's pop-culture references. All his nicknames for Rygel are from the Little Rascals gang short movies from 20s & 30s.
He calls Rygel "Sparky"
This was Eric 'Sparky' Edwards who was Spanky's dad.
He calls him "Buckwheat"
This was Billy 'Buckwheat' Thomas
He calls him Spanky as well (Errrm... for reasons that become clear :D )
This was George 'Spanky' McFarland

Rygel's bodily fluids were shown to be explosive after he ate a bit of the Tannis Root (sp?) in the episode "T.G.I.F.A."... and that's the first season... I have to agree with Motorwerk.
Also, after contemplating Buckwheat... when Rygel is surprised or scared, his eyes get really big and round... JUST like Buckwheat from the "Our Gang/Lil' Rascals"
Spanky, yes also a character from that same early t.v. show... but because my brain is wired a certain way, I thought that maybe it was because Rygel has voyeuristic tendencies... (stroking his eyebrows when he thought he was "watching in" on Chi and D'Argo (but it was actually Chi and Jothee)
(shrug)
Fluffy... is a politically correct term for someone being overweight and Rygel was indeed a fluffy slug of a Dominar.
Offering my opinion...

That explains what Buckwheat means...
I always wondered what the name meant...
I always thought that Spanky was a smutty term John used for him ans Sparky?
That just got me confused...
Also i reckon he calls the scorpy clone Harvey after the 1950's film Harvey featuring a white rabbit of the same name as the film title(the rabbit was an invisible friend of the leading chatacter)
