What are your favorite foods, past and present?

My parents were in Maryland today and brought me back some leftover lobster. My favorite food on earth has to be lobster. i love seafood in general, but lobster is my favorite. My second favorite seafood is shrimp. Then mussels/clams. mmm.

So what are yours and what discoveries have you made regarding food?

I'm a sucker for good crab cakes. But I think the one thing that is my weakness is homemade mac and cheese.

Homemade mac and cheese is the best. :) I also love linguini pescatore, and pretty much any pasta...add seafood to it and it's even better! :D

But, I'm still a sucker for pb&j and a nice grilled cheese and tomato soup (gotta be Campbell's, baby!).

crap don't even get me started on grilled cheese!! my college caf serves them every frelling day and they're either charred or mushy. so i avoid them at all costs. but even looking at them and smelling the grease makes me want to shudder. i'll take a classic grilled cheese done right, but only if i am convinced it's actually not college cafeteria food.

am i the only one who dislikes tomato soup? i like tomato based vegetable soup, but i don't like tomato soup by itself.

i'm a sucker for a good clam chowder, whether new england or manhattan, though i think i prefer manhattan. and i am a sucker for any kind of broccoli cheese soup. soup is one of my favorite foods. i looove soup.

my favorite pasta is probably seafood anything. except i like alfredo based sauces, not marinara. alfredo wine sauces are nice. i like clams in alfredo sauce. it's a really nice contrast.

olive garden makes a great appetizer called Mussels di Napoli. there are 20 mussels in all, and it's in the shell, cooked with wine, lemon-butter, and onions. they are AMAZING and are practically a meal in itself. the sauce is amazing. but i'd stay away from their calamari.

the best food i ever had was on board a cruise ship. i went on a Carnival cruise and i had the absolute best food in the world. I had escargot, which i love and still crave every so often. it's hard to find quality escargot. and i love seafood that is made in cruise ships. it somehow seems fresher, because they use the best quality, plus the fact that you're on the open sea kind of makes you feel like there are people on some hidden deck, fishing for your meal. hehehe.

I love stuffed mushrooms. There's a little hole in the wall Italian restaurant by my parents that has the best stuffed mushrooms in a light olive oil/lemon sauce. The pizza there is good also. It's not greasy and you can tell the ingredients are fresh.

My personal favorites: Pizza and nachos. I am pretty sure that I could eat pizza every day.

I've never had homemade mac n cheese either. But I think I just like the fake cheese flavor of the boxed stuff.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup....oh that's so good! I really like the Campbell's Kitchen Classic Creamy Tomato....It's so good I'll even eat it alone...Which is weird cause it's just a bowl of tomato. But its tasty!

what kind of pizza do you like, xev? and what brand? i have discovered the best pizza...it's a local shop called Tony's New York pizza. it's great pizza. for the same price as a large pizza from dominos or papa johns, you get one that's bigger (18 inches) and has TONS more flavor. plus, they don't charge for toppings. you can get the supreme and be just fine. it's amazing food that is cheaper than a lot of other "italian" places, and i really do like that almost all the people who actually own and operate the company are from the family.

Hmm....My favorite pizza right now is this restaurant called Palo Verde Pizzaria. Ohhhh it's so yummy. Good crust. Nice and thick but not heavy. And I usually just go with cheese and vegetables like mushrooms, olives, bell peppers. I stopped eating pork and beef a while back and the only thing that I really miss is pepperoni. I love love love pepperoni. It makes me sad when I don't eat it...but not that sad that I need to eat it. :)

mmm mushrooms. i love mushrooms on a pizza. i love bell peppers too. i've found that i enjoy yellow and red peppers more than i like green. my ideal "christmas" pizza would be red, yellow, and green bell peppers, mushrooms, lots of cheese, and it would be shaped like a giant star.

but hawaiian pizza is the greatest! i love hawaiian pizza. i don't like barbecue pizza. blegh.

recklesshumor, how is the chinese food in austin?

i'm very picky about my chinese food. i know what's authentic (just because it's owned by chinese people does not make it authentic and vice versa) and not...most chinese places offer a whole different menu, based on who you are. weird, but it's true. if you're a white american walking into the restaurant, most places will give you a menu with things like fried rice and lo mein...most americans like things like kung pao chicken and moo goo gai pan...neither of these are exactly authentic chinese. they've been modified to agree with the american palate. REAL chinese involves things like chicken feet at dim sum. ever have chicken feet?

On the whole, it's not so good here. Not a ton of great ethnic food (other than Mexican and South American) here in Austin. We do have one really good Chinese Restaurant called Twin Lion, so I stick to that. For really good Chinese food, I like San Francisco or Sydney.

i think by far, San Francisco and the LA area has the best authentic chinese food. they have huge populations of asians there, so it's easy to carry on traditions and old recipes. anywhere there is a huge population of older generations of asians and families will typically have better chinese food. the best place for chinese food is chinatown, i think. i think a lot of americans now are going to china, picking up the secrets and the recipes, and are coming back, bringing the authenticity back with them. i know a restaurant in the area, Big Bowl, which is pretty authentic, but is decorated in a very american way. the restaurant is just...nice. it's not a hole in the wall joint. people say the most authentic places are also the grittiest, but i really disagree. i don't want to eat in a place that has great food, but unsanitary conditions. Big Bowl is actually fairly authentic, if not updated a bit, and it's very good food.
