I've a friend who's moving to the Netherlands next spring. She'll be there for a year.
She's looking to purchase a dvd player that will be able to play her movies while she's across the pond, AND any she picks up there (likewise when she returns).
Are there any multi-region players out there she should look into purchasing?

Mine is a Daewoo DVD5000N.
I had to upgrade it though. (burnt a CD and then inserted the CD into the machine to make it, well....do whatever it is that it did) It made the factory menu come up so I could set it to multiregional or region 0. It works for Region 1 and 2, havent tried any others though.
Unfortunately I cant remember what I paid or where I got it (it was from an online company).
Would she have to have certain plugs for over there as well?

She's getting a transformer that she can plug her other electronics into (I-pod, digital camera, cam-corder, etc).

That's important too. You never know when someone's going to give you "Budha's first Christmas singalong with Mohammad and Vishnu" on DVD! :D

I would wait to see what is available there. The region thing seems to be relevant only in region 1, while many multi-regions are available in other countries.
One site to look into is www.dvdrhelp.com -- they feature a database with features and reviews. (look on the menu at the top for 'DVD Players.'

I love my Philips DVP642. I believe the European version is the DVP630. You can easily change the region code to any region or even region 0 (multi-region) by entering a simple code into the remote.
Best of all, this player can play divx and xvid files.

I had to hack mine too to play other regions than Region 2. But we do have plenty of dvd players over here. I got one from Aldi that works like a charm, and there are also cheap ones at other electronic outlets like Mediamarkt and BCC.
I think the problem for her will be that when she buys one here and she returns home to Canada, she always has to use a universal power plug adaptor (not to mention the warranty issues that may arise). My opinion is that she's better off buying a DVD player in Canada and cross-check with the list you've provided.

I've heard the Phillips one is good. I'm considering buying it. Does it tell you how to put in the codes in the instruction manual? It goes for $99CAD at Radio Shack, Kurt.

No, manufacturers never put those codes into the instruction manuals. The (official) reason they exist is because manufacturers like Philips ship the same DVD player model to different regions.
You should check the model at the link BillFrugge provided. If it's not there, you can't unlock it.
