View Full Version : The Locket
The board has been trimmed so much that all the old discussions of episodes are gone, and now there is no thread to discuss The Locket, so I thought I'd start a new one.
Just saw this one again, and noticed something new FOR THE FIRST TIME (how often that happens!! How well written IS this show?).
spoilers? if anyone hasn't seen the whole series yet.......

I always loved how this one ends, with John and Aeryn staring at each other with puzzlement and almost a faint glimmer of recognition that maybe something important had happened, almost touching the lost memory, but---now that we've seen episode 4.22, the disintegrated contents of the picture in the locket pouring down between them as tiny crystalized pellets takes on an added dimension----it looks almost exactly like.............

You know, I just the Locket a few hours ago, but I don't think that they had it planned or that they're linked.
Hey, thanks Pendragon.
Ben S- they didn't necessarily have to have it planned out in advance for it to be linked--they had many choices when filming the 4th season, and they chose to use the same glittery stuff they used in the Locket scene. However, it may have been planned. I always found it kind of strange in the Locket that the picture deteriorated into such a granular shiny material, rather than just dust.....

Ambiguity and understatement. Plots within plots.
This is the point which sets FarScape apart from standard sci fi is that it IS open to interpretation. The connection between the two isn't obvious (well it wasn't to me) but now I see it it gives me goosebumps.
Ramble mode on: All the excitement in finding easter eggs is the finding of your easter egg. If they pointed out the connection or made it too obvious it would ruin the surprise. The best thing about scanning these threads is to pick up things which I have missed.
Hollywood has a number of attractive features but common complaints about it is that it treats fans as if they were stoopid, spells out everything and ties up loose ends the wrong way. FarScape retains the attractive features while reaching out to the thinking person as well. It has more loose threads than a mohair jumper, but in spite of this, it loses nothing from its robust shape and pattern because of the connections like the one which blue has picked up on in this thread.
This is why FarScape episodes can be watched over and over again. Each episode is a work of art in its own right but has significance in the context of the whole masterpiece. It is a delicate balance between the necessary cohesion and closure for continuity and yet flexible and ambiguous enough for artistic freedom to thrive. Artistic freedom not only for the cast and crew but for the fans themselves who comfortably conceive FarScape in their own imagination - leading onto of course our remarkably creative fanfic and so on. Farscape achieves that balance. Not since Shalespeare has a subtle intellectual show posed as entertainment. I hope this show is just the beginning.
There are those, however, with a more anarchistic streak who can interpret Farscape without their intellectual facilities engaged. I'm not casting aspersions on Ben S or men in particular, probably speaking mostly for myself, but most guys would just like to be John Crichton or watch Farscape for Zhaan or Aeryn or Chi or Jool ....
Ramble mode off.

Hi
Actually haven't posted on this board before...
The Locket is my favorite FS episode for many reasons (yeah, the romance...) but I HADN'T noticed that bit about the granules before (& yes, own the whole lot on DVD..)

Interesting.
Thanks for pointing this out.
No matter how many times I see this ep, I find it to be extremly moving.
Maybe it's the shipper in me, but there are usually tears flowing.
