Farscape is currently being shopped to local television stations across the nation by Debmar Studios, for fall 2005 broadcast syndication. The program is being made available to stations through a bartering system, in which no cash changes hands. Local channels simply have to agree to allot specific amounts of advertising time for Debmar to sell to national advertisers, in exchange for attaining the rights to broadcast syndicated episodes of Farscape. A current print article (http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA493150.html) indicates that the company currently has Farscape cleared in 50% of the nation. While that number is good, we CAN make it better.

By January 17, 2005, we are requesting that each of you send a minimum of ONE letter to each of your local broadcast stations. The letter should include demographics, a bit about the ratings success of Farscape and any pleading you might like. The deadline is being used, as the majority of syndication contracts are established prior to the January 25th – January 27th NATPE Syndication Convention. The convention can be looked at as the reward for all who participated in the work leading to the event, being that it is filled with both stars and parties. All of this means that we have VERY LITTLE time to convince your local programming department that they ONLY NEED FARSCAPE!

Sample Letter:

Mr. Dan Stein, VP, Programming
Clear Channel Television
200 Basse Rd.
San Antonio, TX 78209

Dear Mr. Stein:

I just wanted to ask that you please pick up Farscape for your 2005 fall season for those stations you own. Farscape is being offered for the first time in syndication by Debmar Distributing, Inc. at the upcoming NATPE conference/convention and words cannot express how much I'd like to see this amazing show air on any of the local stations in Columbus, OH.

If you haven't heard of Farscape before now, you can learn more about it at www.farscape.com or www.farwhat.com. The first site is owned by the Jim Henson Company, Inc. (producers of the show) and the second is a fan-operated site owned by SaveFarscape.com.

On the Sci Fi Channel, Farscape drew an average of about 1.3 in the ratings, which, given the Sci Fi Channel's market share during the time of Farscape's original run, is darned good. It will draw an even greater audience in syndication and it has probably the most loyal following in television today. People like me (xx-year-old professional female, household income $xxx, married, no children, college-educated, etc.) brought Farscape back from cancellation with the very successful miniseries that aired this past October, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. The Peacekeeper Wars drew an aggregate audience, during the baseball playoffs no less, of about 7 million viewers. And yes, in case you were wondering, I am a typical Farscape viewer.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
me

These are cities that we NEED to FOCUS attention on ALL DAY FRIDAY!

Find a station! Email the station! Let them know of the hit they can have for very little investment! Get a friend, or three, to also send emails! Report back here after you send your request/suggestion. After we focus on these 50, I will post the next 50 on Saturday! We'll surprise Debmar by getting them a couple of hundred phone calls on Monday. ;)

Snurched from the above referenced article thread - - -

A show needs at least 80% U.S. coverage to be viable. Farscape needs to sell more, but the NATPE convention is at the end of the month.
===

Hmmm...

Looks like that 50% is indeed NOTHING to be happy about.

We have FIFTEEN (15) days to turn this tide in a positive fashion! While I know gaining an additional 30% sounds huge, it REALLY ISN'T! We JUST NEED AT LEAST ONE LETTER from the thousands who are out there! Write a letter yourself! Bribe a family member to write a letter! Ask the local Scaped library if you can leave a little blurb about it! Ask your comic shop if you can leave a flier! Just DO SOMETHING!

*off to write my own letters*

Being ignorant of exactly how television stations are structured/managed/ etc., I have a question regarding WB and UPN. Does the parent company make the decisions of what will be shown on all WB stations and all UPN stations or is it decided on a station by station basis?

Being smart enough to know that I'm not "smart enough" to answer that question, I think we need MS or another source to lend some input.

Here's your sample letter, hw:

Sincerely,
me
my address

Similar letters have been sent to all of the local stations for central (Columbus) Ohio and all of the major national types as well.

Thanks for the example letter SB. I'm very slow at composing letters so using yours as a model will be helpful.

Being ignorant of exactly how television stations are structured/managed/ etc., I have a question regarding WB and UPN. Does the parent company make the decisions of what will be shown on all WB stations and all UPN stations or is it decided on a station by station basis?

I think I found my answer for this on Kansas (http://forums.scaperoute.com/kansas/index.php?topic=23359.0) from something MS posted. If I didn't misundestand what she said it looks like its better to contact your WB, UPN, etc stations on the local level. Someone else there stated that the Networks don't supply weekend programming so they buy whatever.

How do I find out who is running the show in my neck of the woods, i.e., MN?

I had to track down the station websites for the stations not given in the big list above and then find the parent company from there and trace backwards.

I think every channel in the country has different call letters, so if you "google" your station's call letters you should be able to find their website. The site should tell you the parent company if you search around.

I just received an email from a co-worker who sent in letters to our local affiliates asking for Farscape, just as a favor to me (he doesn't watch the show, but did say if we get it in Columbus, he'll start). This is a reply he just received via email from WWHO, UPN 53 in Columbus, OH (his letter was snail-mailed):

Dear Mr. Gold:
Thanks for your recent letter about FARSCAPE.
It's one of three science fiction shows that have been offered to us (along with ENTERPRISE and STARGATE ATLANTIS). Due to our WB commitments, though, it's unlikely that we could run it before 10 or 11pm, even if we find room to schedule it. Still, we appreciate your vote of interest, and will keep it in mind when we finalize our schedule.
Thanks again for taking the time to send us your comments.

While they're playing it cagey and saying that even if they could show it, it would only be late, that isn't a problem for us, is it? :ewink: Even better, this is simply a response to one letter. I also sent one. As did at least three other friends of mine, and those are only the ones who bothered to tell me they were sending letters. :D

Western Washington taken care of - we're sending a little scape-package to Western WA UPN, FOX/WB, & two local stations. Those and the rest (non targeted stations like ABC) get postcards/letters/emails.

Question: We've been using Jan 18 as a good deadline for sending stuff to stations but I haven't been breaking any knee caps for that date because I was assuming that stations can make a syndication deal (from Nov/Dec 2004) until further into 2005. I assumed that FS is one of the things Debmar is selling at NATPE...

Of course it's better to contact stations BEFORE they go to NATPE but will it be bad or worthless to contact them after? In other words, will they have already purchased whatever shows they are going to pick up by and during NATPE?

Another question:
Would it be bad form to send a PKW postcard while asking for syndication (since it advertises something not available in the syndication package)? Our location for the PKW Postcard Project is actually still putting them out (ended in Aug). I figured I could pick up a heap of them, label them and hand them out to the folks that are dragging their heels. So all they had to do would be write a short note and mail 'em. I'm thinking about adding stamps for 'em... but I'm already doing a heap on the packages we're sending to our target stations. So dammit - they can buy four postcard stamps!
Anyway - thoughts on using PKW postcards for regular series syndication pleas?
Thanks,

Question One:
I will confess...
I really don't have any idea as to how the syndication purchase system works. My leaning is to state that the majority of the contracts will be decided upon in the weeks leading to, and right after the NATPE. Meaning, I would think that any mail received between now and then would be considered. However, I would prefer to have one of our more knowledgable Scapers comment.

Question Two:
ABSOLUTELY OKAY! Whatever it takes to get the mail flowing! :D

And folks, even though the good ole paper and pen is best, don't shy away from the internet and the e-mail! I sent an e-mail to KRON-TV, the largest independent station in San Francisco, Ch 4 on the dail, over the weekend. I got this response from the vice-president of the station no less:

Jeff,

Thanks for the suggestion and information. I will certainly look into the program. I need to figure our if I have an available time period. I have acquired "Alias", the ABC show and I'm not sure whether I'll renew "Andromeda" and "Twilight Zone", neither of which have garnered any ratings.

Thanks again for taking the time to write.

Subject: A suggestion for your Fall, 2005 programing

Hi,

As you are probably the largest independent TV station in the San Francisco Bay area, and since you only been independent for less than 2yrs, may I suggest this television show that is coming up available for syndication this fall? The show is called Farscape and was produced by the Jim Henson Company, yes, the same ones who produced the Muppets. But DO NOT let you fool you about the content of the show. It is about as far away from a kids show as one can get on television. It is very much a grownup's show, a "thinking" person's show. It's got great drama, romance, comedy, and yes, even tears. The fact that it is set in a scifi setting is irrelevent to the story that is being told, which when you get down to it, is an epic love story. It is also an award winning show, winning the Saturn Awards for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series for 3 years running from 2001-2003 and was nominated for the same category in 2004. It was also nominated for an Emmy in 2002 for Best Costume/Wardrobe. The show's star, Ben Browder, who will be joining the cast for Stargate SG-1 for Season 9 this summer, won the Saturn Award for Best Actor in a Television Series in 2003 as well.

Now here is the kicker: the company contracted by the Jim Henson Co. to syndicate the show is NOT asking for money up front! Let me paste in the relevent article from Variety magazine on the syndication announcement from Debmar Studios in early November, 2004:

Variety reports:

``Farscape,'' which ran for 88 episodes on the Sci Fi Channel from 1999 to 2003, is blasting off into rerun syndication for the first time.

Debmar Studios, headed by Mort Marcus and his partner Ira Bernstein, has bought the domestic rights to ``Farscape'' and is offering the series to TV stations for weekend play in fall 2005. Stations won't pay cash but will set aside seven minutes within each hour for Debmar to sell to national advertisers.

``Farscape'' was one of the most expensive cable-original series ever mounted, filmed in New Zealand by Jim Henson Prods. and Hallmark Entertainment at a cost about $2 million an episode.

Debmar calculated the release date of September 2005 carefully, counting on lots of openings in stations' weekend schedules because Tribune Entertainment, the most active producer of syndicated sci-fi series (``Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda,'' ``Mutant X''), has no new ones on the drawing board, and three Twentieth TV off-network shows - ``Buffy the Vampire Slayer,'' ``Angel'' and ``The X-Files'' - are slated to disappear from weekend syndication following the 2004-05 season.

``Farscape'' ``generated a strong following on the Sci Fi Channel,'' said Bill Carroll, VP and director of programming for Katz TV, the rep firm. ``That usually translates into lots of male viewers when the show goes into syndication.''

Debmar was energized by the average of 1.9 million viewers who tuned in to the four-hour concluding ``Farscape'' movie on the Sci Fi Channel over two nights last month (Oct. 17 and 18). But Debmar's contract with Henson and Hallmark covers only the 88 episodes, not the four-hour finale.
************************************************** *********************************

I hope you would consider this show for your weekend programing this fall.

I just concentrated on the awards the show has received and let the Variety article speak for itself. By the tone of the letter, I'm cautously optomistic.:)

However, just by the fact he already has ***some*** programming lined up says that we need to get a move on across the country as stations are already filling in their lineups for the fall!:whip:

My suggestions for targeting these stations is KCWE 29, KMCI 38 and KSMO 62 as they show the most syndicated material. KSMO has Andromeda and Mutant X on Saturday nights which would be a good fit with Farscape (a loose fit for sure, but still) WDAF 4 shows Stargate SG-1 so that's another good possibility but they're a FOX station and don't have as much leeway with their local time slots as these other three do.

I'm sending out letters today to all of these folks.

Okay, after calling the stations I've got program director names for ya and a little bit of new info.

First the program directors:
KSHB & KMCI - Dana Boyd
KSMO - RJ Morris
KCWE & KMBC - Karen King
KCTV - Beth Green
WDAF - Matt Rankin

And the new info is that the mailing address for KSMO and KCTV is the same, P.O. Box 5555, Kansas City, MO 64109. Not sure how the two stations are related, but when I called the receptionist answered for KCTV and KSMO both. Interesting.

Anyway, didn't want anybody to send letters to the wrong place and have them returned.

BTW -

I found the Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media and Bowker's News Media Directory really helpful. One of them has a section listing TV Programming Director's by state (they are only listed if that company submitted information to said directory).

Check your local library (physical and online) to see if they have these resources for you.

First Letter

Dear *******,
Thanks for the information. We are indeed aware of FARSCAPE and its coming to syndication. We are setting up a meeting to see the show, and discuss it for K*** or K***. If we don’t pick it up, another station in this market will. I assume they will have multiple offers for the program, but it would be a nice match-up with STARGATE.

I've taken care of WGAL8 and NBC11 in Pennsylvania. Also, UPN15, WB54, and Fox45. (That's not to say some more letters to those stations wouldn't hurt.) I forgot to copy down their addresses, and I'd have to retype them, but they're easy enough to find by typing the station names into Google.

While I was at it, I used Spike TV's online form to send the same letter to them. Anyone else care to give that a try? Much as I despise Spike TV in certain respects, they are rather starved for quality programming, and have shown an affection for science fiction in the past . . .

and thanks for that sample letter--a real time saver. I tweaked it, as I hope others will--so each letter is a little different.

here's my version (I got it to fit on one page):

Dear Sir,

Farscape is a brilliant, award-winning, and intoxicatingly entertaining show that was the first original flagship series of the Scifi Channel. It is in the opinion of many critics and viewers the best drama, comedy, action adventure on TV. It is daring, sexy, breathlessly fast-paced, comical, dark, slyly referential to pop culture, superbly acted, emotionally compelling, wild and irresistible.

Farscape will be offered in syndication for the first time at the upcoming NATPE conference by Debmar Distributing, Inc. If you are looking for an award-winning and addictive show for your 2005 fall season, you couldn’t do better than picking up Farscape. It appeals equally to men and women, and is popular across all age groups. It has been critically acclaimed, has a growing and fanatical fan base, and viewers actually spent over $300,000 themselves on publicity (like buying the cover of Variety) to successfully resurrect the show after cancellation with the very successful miniseries that aired last October, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.

When it originally aired on the Sci Fi Channel, Farscape averaged about 1.3 in ratings over its four year run, which reflected a growing number of viewers over time as the Scifi Channel’s penetration of the country increased during those years. It will draw an even greater audience in syndication and it has probably the most loyal and passionate following of any show you might consider. The Peacekeeper Wars drew an aggregate audience of about 7 million viewers, in spite of playing opposite the baseball playoffs and major sports events on other channels. It was the most-watched cable show of the night.

Farscape is simply the best television show I have ever seen. I am (what I am..as Popeye would say :)), and this show blew my socks off. In terms of the potential to grow an astronomical fanbase, this is the new Star Trek. I urge you to grab it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello,

I am a viewer of your station and have a suggestion for some new syndicated

programming that is available. I am a Farscape fan, one of a number in the

Philadelphia and nearby areas. The show is available for syndication and
now would be the time to snatch it up. There is a dedicated and passionate

fanbase that is just waiting to see Farscape at a decent time again. I
know that I would be tuned in. This can only help your regular programming

as well. "Scapers" are known to be loyal and dedicated to any sponsor of

Okey Dokey...

Being that we shouldn't harass Debmar/Henson, I condensed the positive response that we have proof of. This list is certainly not complete, but it gives us a goal of more areas to push for. Specifically, we should focus A LOT of attention on the Nielsen top 100 dma's (right category?). Getting Farscape in those cities is a MUST. I will look for the list.

Well, I guess one obvious answer might be to just try asking Debmar. ( Just throwing that out in case there is a personable and intelligent phone god or goddess listening. :)) Unless it would be a bad idea in some way. I don't know the business, and there may be some good reason to not try that route.

Don't quite get what you are saying HW about rating percentages. We know they already have half the country--we just want to know where that half is located and concentrate especially more on the other half, right? Although I'm sure it doesn't hurt to send mail to reinforce the stations that have already made the decision to pick it up, either.

harveywhispers

Ignore my percentage talk, as it came out wrong. :O

If we do have a willing phone god/goddess out there, and there is not a voice screaming "no", perhaps a call is warranted. After all, we are really just trying to help them get the job done. :D

In the meantime:

Nielsen Top 50 DMA's (Designated Market Area)

These are cities that we NEED to FOCUS attention on ALL DAY FRIDAY!

Find a station! Email the station! Let them know of the hit they can have for very little investment! Get a friend, or three, to also send emails! Report back here after you send your request/suggestion. After we focus on these 50, I will post the next 50 on Saturday! We'll surprise Debmar by getting them a couple of hundred phone calls on Monday. ;)

In my personal opinion as someone who has done extensive phone work, I would suggest that since Jul's already made initial contact, we stick with that. It gets weird and can be awkward to have several different people calling. It maintains a more professional attitude to have one person be 'the' contact. And it's only been two days. I would suggest waiting until say, Tuesday (due to the holiday) and then doing the follow up call.

But that's just me...just my opinion. Take it or leave it. :dunno:

I just fired off an email to my friends in Seattle with the stations and addresses, etc. At least two sets of letters and emails should be going out from them today or tomorrow and I'm pretty sure they'll be forwarding the info to several of their friends out there, too.
THANK YOU!

We're just trying to get organized as a scaper group out here so (numbers-wise) it's like we don't really exist. Even though you live in Ohio - that was a GREAT idea to send the contact info to your Seattle buddies and I for one really appreciate it! THANK YOU!

Anyone else who'd like to send Seattle info along, here it is WA_FSTV (pdf) (http://www.avenuepotter.com/PSS/WA_FSTV.pdf).

And if you know someone who'd like to join the Puget Sound Scapers: PSS Yahoo Group (http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/PugetSoundScapers/) (PSS webpage (http://www.avenuepotter.com/PSS/))

We'll surprise Debmar by getting them a couple of hundred phone calls on Monday. ;)

REMINDER: email stations in these cities TODAY!!!
I know it's better to contact these stations as soon as possible... but I'm confused by the deadline of TODAY. What happens today? I would think that at the very least we have until Monday, January 24th (NATPE Con Jan 25-27).

I'm not trying to be a momentum-killer, I just don't understand. :dunno:

No worries...

Being as we don't know which 1/2 of the country is covered right now, I pulled the top 50 dma's from the Nielsen page. I figured emails to 1 -50 today, 51 - 100 over the weekend and I might post the rest after that. Today is not a hard/fast deadline by any means. Rather, I just thought it an easy way that people can see which cities should be hit hard with requests.

Aside from the explanation...
If I understand DMA's correctly, getting in any of the top ten areas would be a hugely good thing for Farscape (viewers) and Debmar (sell the ad time for more).

The moral of the story...
Make contact in any way/shape/form before the NATPE. Letter, email and call all work.

Personally I loved Farscape, but by season two it had become
so centered on the backstory that I doubt it is accessible
to folks who don't know a Scarran from a Peacekeeper. So
I doubt that it will do well in encores....especially
once or twice a week in a weekend time period where it
will often have to move for sports commitments.

If only they had continued the more stand alone stories of
the first season, it might still be in first run production.
As it is, I suspect most of the true fans have seen each
episode several times and they probably own the DVDs.

We also have a very limited number of available time periods,
so I'd say we're a long shot at best.

It's also my understanding that The Jim Henson Company had
committed to production of the Peacekeeper Wars long before
they had a U.S. deal in place, so as loyal as the fans are...
it's probably a stretch to say fans brought the show back.

Thanks for watching.

I've just taken care of the Big Easy (aka New Orleans) since it was in my area.

Also, here's another set of stations for Mississippi which are all owned and operated by the same people. These stations represent the best chance of getting a syndicated deal for Farscape in MS. All three of these stations already have huge blocks of syndicated Sci-Fi programming on Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights (Mutant X, Stargate SG-1, Outer Limits, Andromeda, X-Files, UPN Twilight Zone). With some of these series not lasting much longer in syndication, it's very likely these MS stations will be looking for something to fill a void; and Farscape would easily fit the bill.

General Manager - Mike Dunlop

Programming Director - Linda Jacobs
Email to: lindajacobs@jam.rr.com

Also a few short notes on the other MS stations.

WAPT Channel 16 had a Sci-FI block on Saturday nights, but they stopped it about 7 years ago. They are a possibility, but likely a waste of time. WAPT has instead opted to target minorities, and the general manager seems to think Sci-Fi isn't a means to that goal.

WDAM Channel 7 had a Sci-FI block on Saturday nights about 10 years ago, but nothing since. WDAM was the home for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in MS. They may now be open to the idea of Farscape with the right pitch; it's hard to say.

WJTV Channel 12 has sporatically supported Sci-Fi programming (most recently with The Outer Limits), but their Sci-Fi shows usually end up buried at 3am on Sunday mornings or a like spot.

WLBT Channel 3 has never supported syndicated Sci-Fi; and I would be very suprised to see them start now.

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? If the answer is yes, find a station in one of the cities below/email the station with a request for Farscape/let us know that you have helped us cover the city.

The cities below are very important, as they are the top 50 DMA's for the Nielsen ratings. Securing a station in any of these cities would be superb, due to the fact(s) that it would mean more viewers and better ad time for Debmar to resell. We NEED to secure as MANY of these cities as possible!

One of our letter writers forwarded a very interesting year old article, in which Jim Paratore (President of Warner Bros. Telepictures Prods) is interviewed. It seems that he is of the opinion that show which hit a bigger audience, at less of an expense, can be a detriment to television. His reasoning is that such programs drive away the upscale audience that advertisers are looking for. His preferred strategy is to provide quality advertiser friendly shows, which attract the kind of audience that the advertisers are looking for (hmmm...like our demographics).

I realize that this article may not have huge meaning, within the frame of Farscape being syndicated reruns. However, it certainly is interesting...

That's very cool about the WB 11 in NY. If i'm not mistaken, I think that's the only station that doesn't have a sci-fi oriented show on in syndication on the weekend. The others already have Buffy, Angel and Stargate. Maybe that will help their interest in Farscape. :)

"That's very cool about the WB 11 in NY. If i'm not mistaken, I think that's the only station that doesn't have a sci-fi oriented show on in syndication on the weekend."-joker325

WB 11 already has Andromeda, and Mutant X, which run very late at night on weekends, and I think they may also have Twilight Zone.

I blanketed Jackson, MS; Shreveport, LA and Baton Rouge, LA with e-mails and snail mails last week. No responses yet, but those stations have at least had one shout. :D I sent out 49 snail mail letters alone (sending to the parent companies, general managers and program directors of every station in MS and LA); not sure how many on the e-mails (the most important e-mail was to the WGN Superstation which I and most of the nation also receive).

Does anyone know how these deals work? If one station in a region picks up FS (say... I dunno, Seattle UPN...) can other stations in the area also pick it up or does that station have an exclusive agreement?

stlscape
01-20-2005, 10:55 AM
IIRC, syndicating is being done on a station-by-station basis, so I would assume it would be *possible* for multiple stations in one city to pick it up.

I would doubt that this would happen with FS (at least in this round of syndication), but gosh, wouldn't it be nice to have the problem of having to decide which of four or five episodes to watch, then tuning to the appropriate station!

Okay, I got a very surprising response from my letter barrage of a couple of weeks ago. When I got home from work last night, there was a message on my machine from Ms. Ann Sutton of WJXT in Jacksonville, FL (I'm in OHIO!!) saying that she had received a note from the home office (Post-Newsweek) regarding my letter and wants me to call her back and tell her about Farscape and why the Post-Newsweek stations should pick it up. I'll say it again.

Now, I can be pretty eloquent on paper, but in conversation? I get so tongue-tied sometimes it's actually painful. So, any suggestions for what to make sure I do say and what to make sure I DON'T say? I'll be calling her back at about 10:00 am EST (break time at work).

RydraWong
01-21-2005, 07:41 AM
Go you! :bounce:

I'd say jot down some notes to have with you while you talk.

If it was me, I'd go for the standard pitch - unique show, cult hit, passionate audience who tend to be professional, well-educated and well-heeled, sells fantastically on DVD but this is the first time non-cable viewers will get to see it, attracts equal numbers of men and women, critics love the show, drama/comedy/scifi/people in leather/Muppets - something for all the family! , going into syndication on the heels of a high-profile miniseries, etc.

The usual thing ;).

Woot! :woohoo: :thud:

I just got off the phone with Ann Sutton, acting as representative for the Post-Newsweek broadcast stations. What a nice, nice lady! We talked for about 20 minutes and I didn't get nearly as tongue-tied as I expected. ;)

She checked out www.farwhat.com ('cause she really likes the name of the site) and was magra-impressed. She knows Mort Marcus of Debmar Studios very well and said she'd be talking to him about us. She was floored by our grass-roots effort to get Farscape into national syndication, very impressed that we've been picked up by KSTW in Seattle (she said the station manager had actually interviewed with her for a position in her station, WJXT, a few years ago, so she has met him), was equally impressed that WB11 in New York City was interested in picking us up and said that we should focus our efforts on the Tribune stations.

In her opinion, if we get all of the Tribune-owned stations to pick up Farscape, then we're in. She also said she'd be talking us up to her people and anyone else she could think of that might help our cause. (I think I talked her into checking us out at her local Blockbuster, too.)

Got this not-so-good news in snail mail from KTLA in Los Angeles:

KTLA has already purchased new programming for the fall to replace shows that have been canceled. So, unfortunately, KTLA does not have plans to purchase the Farscape series since our current Sci-Fi programming (Andromeda) will be discontinued by the production company this fall. You might wish to contact UPN (Channel 13) as they have carried the Star Trek franchises over the years.

Unfortunately, they're the Tribune station in LA. But I'll give KCOP (the UPN station) another go, and also KTTV (the Fox station).

KCOP has always been a scifi friendly station. When I lived in LA, they used to have a mega scifi block on Sunday nights with the original Star Trek, followed by Next Gen, followed by Deep Space 9, followed by Voyager, followed by Babylon 5. Now THAT was a drad schedule :D

This station is VERY important for Farscape. Unlike regular tv stations, a superstation is available outside its DMA. WGN's local DMA is Chicago; however, I got WGN when I was living in Memphis, TN and I had cable.

We also get it in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin.

Send those emails NOW! :D

Harvey--I asked Sally in Iowa if she would send a letter to her local affiliates about getting Farscape in her area. Just got word from Sally in Iowa. She writes:

"Over the weekend I e-mailed KWWL in Waterloo, and KCRG and KGAN in Cedar Rapids (about getting Farscape)."

I don't know if anyone else has contacted that area, but at least these networks were contacted once.

That guy in Harford seems to be sending his standard letter of misinformation to everyone he hears from. This is the second time I've seen it posted. So much wrong with what he says its hard to find where to start. Someone should clue him in (politely) that Henson himself says the efforts of the fans brought the show back, and only because of the noise the fans made did the independent investors come to him and give him the money for the production, before they had a distributor.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a person who has a dim view of the average viewer's intelligence. People simply do not always start their interest in a series on the first episode; and Farscape is one of the better examples of a show that had its own individual stories built into the overall arc (and even recaps at the beginning of the relevant eps).

This is simply a case of the sword cutting both ways. If someone's interest is piqued, they will seek out information to clear their understanding. If someone not interested in Farscape has tuned in on a weekend afternoon, the simple fact is that their weekend viewing habits are so erratic that there is no way to predict what they will watch. As such, you cannot predict them changing the channel or staying tuned - it is simply whatever catches their fancy in that moment on that weekend day.

Bottom line, I see that this person's station is currently running Andromeda and Mutant X. They are likely replacing these with Alias and Smallville (what I've heard the most on other syndies being shopped right now). Does this man really want to argue that Andromeda, Mutant X, Alias and Smallville are somehow *less* arc based than Farscape? I imagine this station was also running Earth: Final Conflict when it was on; and I would argue that series was even more arc based than Babylon 5 (the five season novel for television).

Does the WGN deal pretty much tie-up the rest of the loose ends?

AyuRocks
02-11-2005, 07:16 PM
Odile - Here's what I make of it, I could be wrong.

The only Fox stations that we are sure are picking it up are owned an operated stations - 8 of out of the top 10 markets. So far I think we're only sure of the Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York O&O stations have picked it up. So it is possible that the Fox station in your area either isn't O&O or isn't one of the 8 markets it was picked up in.

So the WB affliate in your area could have picked it up instead.

HW - I'm not sure I understand your question. Even with the WGN deal stations could still choose to pick it up and Debmar can still "sell" it to them. There are a few areas where multiple stations will be airing the reruns.

Unless of course the "cable" part is what has you confused, because I'm not so sure about that either. Either that means that the WB affliate is only available on cable in that area, or something we don't know about is going on..

My brain hurts. LOL

The "cable" part is what is confusing me. We know that "broadcast" stations are supposed to be the only elligible stations in this round of syndication. Meaning, you don't need to have any special hardware. This deal would seem to go against the "broadcast only" rule.

I was then wondering if the fact that the WGN deal came into being meant that there was less incentive for local broadcast stations to compete? Or, for that matter, if the WGN deal basically nullified the opportunity for local stations to sign-on (I equated WGN with "cable WB").

It's all probably a matter of semantics...

The Clear station down south referred to before.

Now as for cable not cable this is how things may be playing out.

WGN is if I remember out of Chicago and is a broadcast station there but is also cable and satelite available over other parts of the US. The WB station that Eric may be referring to could fall along the same lines. It could be based out of the San Fransisco and be available in other areas via cable. I think this is a growing trend. Especially with the new High Definition craze going on.

Then agian I could be way off base. But if this is the case than Clear may not want to carry Farscape knowing its being carried by a more popular and bigger channel.

A station WAY the heck down in Monterey, not wanting to carry it when a San Francisco station is?(wish I knew if Ch21 is the station in question) That makes no sense considering how far away they are.

As for WGN, ddd, you are correct. WGN can pick it up because they ARE a local broadcaster in Chicago. They, like WTBS and WOR, have piped their feed unto cable, drasticly increasing their viewership. Of course, it helps that they carry the Chicago Cubs games ;) So that is how they slip in under the wire to qualify to carry the show on syndication.

Although WGN is a local broadcaster in Chicago, Farscape is not going to be run locally on WGN because of the FOX deal. It's going to run on one of the Fox stations.

Got an interesting reply today for a letter I wrote to KCAL (in LA) back in December or early January....

Thank you for writing to KCAL/KCBS in regards to the desire to have Farscape on our station. KCAL did have interest in airing this show and even tried to get the show on the air back in 2002.

Unfortunately, DebMar studios, distributors of the show, decided to broadcast the series on Fox. This means that in September, Farscape should be available Weekends on either KTTV, channel 11, or KCOP, channel 13.

Hope that clarifies things in regards to the show.

KCAL Programming

Now, obviously, they mean that in the LA area the show will be on a Fox station, which we already knew....

But I was totally fascinated by the remark about trying to get the show in 2002! Apparently someone was listening to us! :)

Neither was I, Jeff, till I started collecting addresses to write back in December. When the address list in the LA Times had them both with the same address, I went looking on their websites to confirm that....

I don't think LA is the only city where Fox owns more than one station, though.

We have not acquired the show. We already have a number of network and syndicated commitments for the Fall, so it's unlikely that we will be picking it up.

11:00AM
starting 10/02/05 (and after football season, will most likely move it to

From UPN 20 in Denver:

"I was going through old viewer emails today and came across yours regarding Farscape. Someone may have already alerted you to this, but I thought I’d drop you a note just in case they haven’t. UPN20 did pick up Farscape. We will begin airing it in September, right now it is scheduled for Sundays at 6pm. It will be followed by an amazing new drama called Da Vinci’s Inquest which I highly recommend.

Enjoy Farscape on UPN20 this fall."

Da Vinci's Inquest is good too. :aok: But not really the most logical followup up to Farscape...

Ooooh DaVinci's Inquest is gooooooooood!! Any fans of Battlestar Galactica, one of the acttresses in that is the later seasons of DaVinci. But I think in Canada we are in the 7th season, So it's new to you I guess.

The only Fox stations that we are sure are picking it up are owned an operated stations - 8 of out of the top 10 markets. So far I think we're only sure of the Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York O&O stations have picked it up. - reply 196
