Speaking of dancing robots, this is a fabulous clip of four of Sony's latest creations performing in a dance:

Just seen the new Golf Gti ad. Brilliant stuff. I love the remix by Mint Royale.

Link: http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-video/Media/video/2005/01/27/golfgti.mov

"NEW YORK (CBS) A new take on Gene Kelly's famous Singin' In The Rain scene hits TV screens as part of a new advertising campaign for Volkswagen.

One of the most iconic scenes in the history of cinema has now been changed to show Gene Kelly rapping and breakdancing to a club-mix of Singin' in the Rain. Makers of a new car advert received permission from the Gene Kelly Foundation to give the rain-soaked scene a new twist which features three break dancers and body poppers performing a number of modern dance moves against the same backdrop as the 1952 original. The original star's face was then mapped on to that of the dancers, who follow the same route Kelly takes in the street, with the aid of computer wizardry. Now the late Hollywood star appears to be somersaulting, body popping, and break dancing.

The TV and cinema advert has been made to promote the latest Golf GTI, an update of the original. The song which accompanies it is a remix of the original, created by dance music duo Mint Royale. Designers created replica streets to look exactly like they did in the film, which was set in the 1920s, and cranes were used to match the camera angles.

Volkswagen communications manager Catherine Woolfe said: "The idea behind the commercial is all about the fact that the new Golf GTI is the original Mk I, but updated for 2005. The latest Golf is seen as a classic and iconic car and we really wanted to show that in a very unusual and memorable way."

It's an interesting point though, isn't it. Is it morally right to use (or abuse) his image in this way? If the Gene Kelly Foundation (which I assume is run by members of his family) are happy with it, does that make it acceptable?

I-am-so-Johns-girl
02-07-2005, 04:41 PM

i like the gene kelly one. it does seem a tiny bit creepy but i like it.

i don't think it's a massacre of the scene, i think it's a different interpretation. i have a feeling that if gene kelly could breakdance he would.

Levis engineering jeans ad with the two people running thru all the walls...the music is fab!
How they did it
The campaign took six months to produce, and cost Levi’s £2.5 million; it is arguably the most expensive advert ever made. The narrative was first planned out three-dimensionally on computer by FrameStore and CFC, the post-production companies who worked on Walking with Dinosaurs, Walking with Beasts, and The Beach, and a vast set was then built on location in Budapest, with open doorways through which the characters were required to run.
The effect of crashing through walls and into the air was created through the use of canons, which fired dirt and cork to simulate explosions of brick and plaster. Computer generated images were then used to conceal the doorways and ‘build up’ the walls, and to enhance the explosions; the characters were added back into the frame afterwards. The closing section of the ad, when the characters burst into the open and apparently run vertically up tree-trunks, was shot on long horizontal runways against blue screens, with real branches which were later enhanced by more trees built and superimposed at post-production stage. Prior to their final take-off into the sky, the characters were wired up into harnesses to simulate flight. Easy when you know how … not.

That's one of them yep! :D Though it's not the first in the series.. they started with being adverts about a zoo keeper keep having his dinner pinched by the pandas (or rather Norman..) because they were fed up with Eucalyptus. It was cat and mouse. (or rather panda and zookeeper) as to whether the Panda would be rumbled as the culprit. There's just something funny about a panda with a northern accent..though I can't put my finger on it! :lol
