View Full Version : Kind of annoying ...

My new job is a receptionist position, and I sit out front completely cut off from the rest of the office. Anyway, a man came in to see one of the guys in the office. He was sitting in the lobby waiting, so it's just the two of us, and I sneezed. The guy didn't say a word. No "bless you," no "gazuntit," no nothing.

Now, I always say "bless you" when someone sneezes--ALWAYS! I think it's rude not to. (And yes, I know I'm going to get a lot of Dogma references here, but this really bothers me.)

No Dogma reference here...

"You are so good looking..."
:)

In all seriousness--it is pretty rude-especially with just the two of you in the room together.

Yes!!! I also say excuse me when I burp or something, even if I'm alone. It's just habit. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does it!!

I say something like.....urrghh.... to myself when I sneeze....but i even said bless you to the woman in the shop the other day when she sneezed. It such a little thing and is easy and makes someone feel better....why not?

I think some people just are not taught manners and yes that bugs me too Kech. My big thing is when someone doesn't hold the door for you if they go thru it first. Down here almost everyone does it, but it seems I find someone that doesn't when I have my hands full and they let go of the door right when I start thru it. I think that is so rude. :irked:

Usually when I sneeze people say "Good God, what was that!?"

When someone sneezes, I always try to one-up the people who say "bless you" by throwing holy water at the person who sneezed.

Maybe the guy wasn't accustomed to saying it. In NE, very few people ever say it, except sometimes older ladies that come in my office. We never said that in our home, but it was because it originated with the belief that when you sneezed, your soul left your body or the devil had access to your body or something. By saying bless you, it warded off evil spirits or kept your soul in ya. It didn't coincide with our religious beliefs, so my mom didn't think we should say it. I usually just hand them a Kleenex and ask them to wipe their boogers off the person next to them.

I think it has less to do with manners and more to do with customs, like trina was saying. Around here very few people say it either. I always say please and thank you, even if it's that person's JOB to do what they're doing for me, and I always will hold doors open for people, etc, but I don't really say "bless you" because well, no one really does around here (in my experience).

g_s!! LMFAO!

"Grandpa, I'm really proud of you," said the granddaughter.

"What's to be proud of?" asked the old man.

The granddaughter replied, "I noticed that when you sneeze, you've learned to put your hand in front of your mouth."

"Of course," explained Grandpa. "How else am I going to catch my teeth?"

*apologies...*

Hi,

Maybe the guy was deaf and didn't hear you sneeze. Just a thought.

Thanks

Completely OT, but reading AnnaSun's comment reminded me. I had two kids compete in a speech contest last week that were deaf. Both had great gestures. :D (Before anyone gets offended, let me just say they could both speak too).

sometimes people are a bit taken aback when I say it too, and I think I know why. It is a common thing to say w/in a family, because of the close structure. In a casual public situation too, being "familiar" with a stranger, is widely accepted. In a business situation however, people can be VERY formal [depending on age and how they were raised] and in that situation, it would be less acceptable, since you don't know them 'personally'. Kinda like my bosses, bosses, boss [VP level] is Mr. rather than his first name, unless he indicates to me I may use that.

All that said, most people have long since discarded such niceties, because they smacked of a 'class' system. I think many people now look at other people generally as just like themselves, then they apply the golden rule...

Then too, I know many upper end businees people who use attitude and body language to convey their disposition, walling off to stay away. That is not to say that this guy wasn't an idiot. I have always been friendly with any kind of receptionist for several reasons. One is that they get run ragged all day and the deserve a smile, a greeting and certainly a gesundheit. The other, is that a receptionis or assistant has the power to grrease your way into meetings and such.

...or thwart you entirely

Unless you sneezed really loudly, the guy could have been off in his own little world, thinking about what he was going to say at his meeting, and didn't hear you. I've walked right past people I knew who said hello to me when I've been deep in thought about something.

Sometimes I say it, sometimes I don't. Depends on where I am and who I'm with.

I have a thing about saying "bless you," since it is steeped in religious origins and I'm a stupid, narrow-minded atheist. So, I say gesundheit, because it means, literally, good health.

I always say geusundheight (even though I don't know how to spell it), probably because that's what my dad always says...don't know why. But not if you're one of those obnoxious people who sneeze like eight times in a row. I'll say it TWICE. That's it.

I guess it must be a social/cultural/religious thing. I never thought about it, I guess because down here, pretty much everyone says it. Looks like I learned something new today.

Maybe it's like the old ladies around here. When you do something for them, they say, "Bless your little heart." I don't know how they know the size of my organs. Perhaps they're witches.

I hate you.

That just made me think of how addictive it is when you're really tired and then someone yawns and then you just can't help it and you yawn too.

And now I can't stop yawning.

Teehee :D

The only store my mom got it from doesn't sell it anymore :( But here's a link to another place that does - http://www.go-kat-go.com/volcanosnotbox.html
Plus there is always eBay :D

They also make one shaped like a teacup, but it's not as cool - http://www.shoplooponline.com/browse.cfm/4,314.html

They should have made a kettle and you pull the kleenex from the spout.
