View Full Version : Glasses? Who wears them?

Hi,
Just been told I have to wear glasses because I am longsighted and i've been having headaches. I got a really cool pair of glasses for just £10. I get income support so I didn't have to pay £75. How cool is that?
So who here wears glasses? Are you long or short sighted?

I went to the optomitrist for the first time in 10 years last spring. He told me that he could give me glasses, but for the prescription I need, I could get stronger lenses on a $2 pair of sunglasses...

I'm slightly near sighted, but, my astigmatism is pretty bad. If it wasn't for the astigmatism I probably wouldn't wear glasses at all. I get headaches if I don't use them when reading...especially my computer monitor. :hypno:
Oh, and I paid like 300 bucks for the glasses I have on now.

Me! I'm near-sighted, I don't usually wear them all the time but I definately need them for class. I want to get contacts because I sometimes forget to wear my glasses and then can't see a darn thing on the board.

long...with a lazy left eye with an astigmatism ,and a squint in my right...:lol
but the only time I wear glasses is when I try to read the little roads in the map book at night.

'ya buncha punks! I am VERY nearsighted, and have had to wear glasses since 1st grade [frell, that's 33 years now boys and girls... OI!] so basically I can't see without them beyond shapes... and now my allergies are too bad [even with claritin] to wear contacts, so... no choice...

I wear glasses when I'm on the computer or reading, and when driving. (At least, I'm supposed to wear them ...)
I have virtually perfect vision in my left eye. My right eye is BAD--so bad that if my left eye is closed, I can barely read this computer screen that's about a foot away from my face!
Thankfully, my health insurance covers vision, so I only paid about $100 for my glasses.

Used to have glasses, but switched to contacts about a year ago. I have an astigmatism, but my eyes have gotten 50% worse over the last two years. Don't know what that's about. My allergies are bad too, so I just look like I've been on a three day bender whenever I have my contacts in.

I'm both.

I can't wear contacts, they bother my eyes too much. Contact, I should say--I'd only need to wear one, because my left eye is fine without one.

I am in the arthurfrdent category. It may have been second grade when I got glasses though. I hated them because for girls they were these really ugly half circles in tan, white, pink or baby blue. If I wanted to see something on the board and couldn't squint enough, I'd take a bit of paper, wad it up ad walk to the wastebasket in the front of the class to get a better look at the board.
My eyesight was so bad and I refused to wear my glasses, that at 13 the optomitrist give me contact lenses, although he didn't prescribe them for people that young. I've been wearing them for 45 years. I have glasses as backup or first thing in the morning or last thing at night, when I'm not wearing my contacts. My insurance covers eyewear every other year, but will not cover contacts and glasses both, so I eat the cost of the glasses.
I need bat sonar to get around if I'm not wearing correction. Due to my approaching elderly status, I'm starting to lose a bit of the close up acuity I have. I actually have the graded contact lenses with less correction on the edges and more in the middle to make reading close up easier. At some point I will have to have half granny glasses to read close up while wearing contacts.

I wear glasses from morning till night. Sexy glasses.
I'm near-sighted and astigmatic. The lenses are very thin, but I need them nonetheless. I do buy nice glasses from eyeglasses.com, I figure if I'm going to wear them all day long then they may as well be fashionable. I've got Calvin Klein black now, but nothing beats the last pair I had - Versace tortoise. I need to get those re-lensed.

Same as mgraylorn and arthurfrdent, been wearing eyeglasses
since grade school, around 3rd grade. (Several years, I do
not count anymore.)
I'm near sighted, and I have astigmatism pretty bad in the left eye.
My current glasses are my first bifocals, but I take them off to
read, except at the computer. :comp:
I cannot :drivin: drive without glasses. The most recent license
renewal experience was a bit rough, I need to get my eyes checked
again.
Oh, and I paid like $400 (American) for the glasses I have on now.
Can't weat contacts, dry eyes and allergies and migraines from messing
around: putting things in my eyes.

I was tricked into having an eye exam a little over a year ago and they told me that I needed glasses. I liked my glasses when I first got them but over time and due to my dog thinking that they were a toy, I have grown tired of them. I still wear my prescription sunglasses but I will probably get a new pair whenever I get a new pair of glasses.
BTW, I believe that I am near-sighted.

I used to wear glasses, from 2nd grade to 7th, but I went back for a check up and they told me I didn't need them anymore. the astigmatism corrected itself. talk about awesome.

I wore glass from grade five onwards, but probably needed them much earlier. I had a very serious astigmatism in my right eye and a not so serious one in my left. This resulted in my glasses being much heavier on one side than the other. Since I was also a geeky bookworm, that circumstance combined with railway track braces and lopsided glasses made my teen-years... shall we say, a character-building experience?
About five years ago my husband and I decided to have lasik surgery. Calgary is home to Dr. Gimble, one of the leading pioneers in the surgery, and we had met many people who were very satisfied with the results.
Originally I was only going to get the bad eye done, but the chance of 20/20 vision was too tempting and so I got both eyes done. I have been extremely happy with the results. 20/20 vision is worth it. Waking up in the morning and not having to get out of bed to be able to see the time is a joy. And when working out I don't have to worry about sweat getting in my eyes and under my contacts, or under the bridge of my glasses. Big improvement.
One caveat though.
If I had seen the :eye: :eye: scene in "A Clockwork Nebari" before the surgery - they would never have gotten me in that chair. No way, no how, not gonna happen.
Good thing that episode was still in my future. :D

I have been thinking of getting Lasik.... kinda paranoid about it, though.
20/20 would be wonderful! I'm sick of having migraines where my eyes feel like they ar going to pop out and having my glasses tough my temples makes it worse.

I'm supposed to wear glasses, but I never do, unless someone is giving me a driving lesson.
I have trouble with depth perception after dark. I don't know whether that's long or short sighted.

Since 5th grade. I guess a clue to the teacher was when I miswrote the sentence "A keg of nails is on the dock." I put, "A leg of eels is on the deck." Everyone just thought I was being funny. I just figured that if kangaroos could travel in mobs, then eels could travel in legs. Anyway, really, really near-sighted.
I've considered lasik, but my co-workers who have it, still wear reading glasses. I'd hate to have reading glasses, cause I often do a lot of tiny detail work.
Lately, I've been hearing advertisements for a non-surgical method of improving eyesight, called See Clear (or something like that.) Anyone here ever heard of it?

Another wearer of glasses here. *waves* I'm nearsighted (can't see in the distance), with a slight astigmatism, and wear them all the time. I can read without them, but it takes a moment or two to adjust, and I must get a little closer to the reading material without them (than if I had my glasses on). I used to wear contacts as well until a few years ago. Now, I can no longer tolerate the contacts; over wear will do that sometimes. ;) I believe I'm a candidate for LASIK, but I'm content with my glasses actually so I haven't pursued laser surgery.

Need 'em for driving (nearsighted w/ astigmatism), though I where them all the time. Tried contacts... my eyes didn't like 'em. Lasik is too expensive.
Good news, though... just had my :eye: doc appt this past Monday. Three years, and my eyes have changed so little that my left eye with the 3-year-old lense is still 20/15, and my right eye is now at 20/20.
I just saved $$$ not having to buy new glasses or lenses! :bounce:

I had glasses for 30 years.....hated every minute (try playing hockey), got contacts, but after 10 years or so, my eyes rejected them......got them lasered last year......20/20 for the first time since I was 13 years old.....would recommend it to anyone! no halos, no dents in my nose, no problems going out in the rain (I live in Oregon)........just wonderful.

I wear glasses every now and then. I'm near sighted, and by that I mean I can see about six inches in front of me... literally. After that, it's all a blur. I wear contacts most of the time, but today I just couldn't be bothered to put them in.
Lesse, my glasses cost me $75, and they didn't charge me for the lenses because I got plain lenses... nothing special at all about them. So they weigh a ton! Plus, they're the ultimate hipster glasses, you know, like the rocket scientists in Apollo 13.

Glasses since grade 6. First thing on in the morning and last thing off at night. I can't see a damn thing!!
I'm near sighted, but have been fighting having to get bifocals for the last 10 years. I'm losing the fight! I'm constantly having to raise my glasses to read things.
I suppose I have to give in and get bifocals :(
I've done contacts, but allergies (like others) were a problem after awhile. Although they do make the daily wear contacts which is something I somtimes do if I'm going out and want to be glasses free.
The only problem with the daily wear contacts is that you have to put them direcly onto your iris which is something I have a problem with. In the old days when contacts weren't so thin you could put them below your iris and then your eyelid would slide them into place.
I hate anything to do with eyes. I never thought I could get contacts in because it grossed me out, but I managed - all due to vanity!

I wear glasses when reading and infront of the computer (i should be wearing them now but...). I believe that I'm slightly near sighted and have a slight astigmatism. I've had glasses since 7th grade (i think) but didn't wear them much because I was embarrassed about them, until I switched schools in 8th grade, and people at that school thought they looked cool...
speaking of eyes...i have my eye exam coming up in a couple of weeks...hopefully my eyes havent gotten too much worse....

I discovered I was near sighted when I started driver's ed. It's just bad enough to require correction, so the prescription is pretty weak.
It works out okay because it solves a second problem as well. My eyes dilate more than usual making my eyes sensitive to bright lights. My glasses have enough tint to keep me from being blind on sunny days.
As for contacts... My optometrist had to heavily sedate my eyes to perform a pressure test, and he still couldn't do it! There is no way that I'd be able to put a contact on the surface of my eye...

Nearsighted: -4.5D left eye, -5.25D right eye. Translation: nearly blind. Without glasses I can only see about 10" in front of my face. I used to wear contacts, but always have trouble with them after a few months. Glasses aren't so bad, except when I ski or swim. I keep disposable contacts around for those activities, which don't happen often.
I like small frames, because the lens edges don't get as thick that way.

I read without my glasses, with no problems, but if I wear them at work (I have to computer chart) so run into things that are directly in front of me...So I just wear them to drive the car, or watch tv.....

As a general rule men have better night vision than women. Women do better with peripheral vision. I think comes from the selective advantages going back to the hunting and gathering days. Men did hunting and fishing through the day and on into the night. Women did the gathering, minding kids, multi tasking, keeping an eye on everything... ;)
Short sighted with an astigmatism for me. Getting my first pair of multifocals soon. All the better to watch Farscape with :D
Can't read with glasses on. Can't see street signs without them. It was a revelation in second grade when I first got glasses that people were supposed to be able to see the leaves on trees. I was amazed to be able to see the leaves. Got contacts as a teenager--what a pleasure to not wear the glasses anymore. Then, er, got older, and couldn't focus to read with the contacts in. It seemed dumb to get reading glasses over contacts, so I just went back to wearing glasses, and take them off or push them to the top of my head to read or draw or see close up.

I've worn glasses on and off since I was in the 5th grade.
Just recently, I went to the eye doctor and found out I have to wear them--again, and this time it looks permanent. I'm EXTREMELY far sighted with astigmatisms in both eyes, and no--zero--zilch peripheral vision in my right eye due to brain surgery I had 10 years ago. So I wear my glasses whenever I have to read or do close up work. Otherwise, they're in my glasses case and, more often than not, on top of my head. I can't wear contacts because of my type of astigmatisms, migraines and allergies. I tried ONCE, but my eyes swole shut and I couldn't see for hours after taking them out. It was awful!! LOL I paid about $150 (US) for my glasses. Very thin, lightweight frames with the sorta squarish look to them.... Round frames look funky on me because my face is too long.
My son has been wearing glasses since last year. He was 6 years old when he got his first pair, and he'll probably have to wear them for life. He's far-sighted, as well, but his near vision is horrid.
