OK, so I was dumb and messed with my MP3 player and it's USB connection in a way I wasn't supposed to.

Anywho, I went to the manual and since it's only being detected on my system as a local drive, it means the file system has some sort of error and I'm supposed to run CHKDSK on it and tell it to automatically fix errors.

Here's where the problem comes in, I go in and type chkdsk e: /f and it'll go through and check, but it comes up with a fatal error when it goes to start fixing, which I guess may be a problem withthe computer (though it could be the player). The error is with ufat.dll.

Anyone have any ideas how I can make it run the fix? It'll run chkdsk no problem in readonly mode but freaks out when told to automatically fix errors.

I e-mailed Archos support and am awaiting a reply, just wondered if anyone had any experience with the chkdsk ufat.dll error on their computer and/or had any ideas about this.

I can attach an error report file if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not going to be much help here but I have no clue as to what is wrong with your computer. If it makes you feel any better, hw's computer is down for the count due to the AC adapter plug-in on the computer broke.

My brother is a frelling computer wiz, I'll ask him when he's off work...he'll be on his days off in a few days.

So if you haven't got help by then, I'm very sure he'd be able to help ;)

Ufat.dll is the component of Chkdsk that contains the information about the FAT filesystem that is also being used on the harddrive of the gmini 400 (I'm assuming that's the mp3 player you're talking about). What is the exact error message you get when trying to repair?

And what happens when you:
1. Right click on the gmini drive in windows explorer and click on properties.
2. Click on the "Tools" tab.
3. Click on "Check now".

It won't even let me right click on the drive without the My Computer window freaking out and not responding.

I've searched some of the discussion groups and there are a few cases that are somewhat similar to your problem. I'm starting to think ufat.dll is the cause of the problem instead of a symptom. You might try replacing ufat.dll in the windows\system32 folder. I've attached the file from my PC, so you can use it as a replacement. It's from a Windows XP SP2 installation. Don't worry about getting Dutch messages from chkdsk, ufat.dll is always English ;) Hope it works.

I tried that earlier but only on my desktop, so I tried it on my laptop. No good :( I was on hold for tech support with archos, but I'm not real sure what they'll be able to do for me. I hung up because I'm gonna wait until after I watch Angel, before would have been cutting it close. hehe.

Thanks for the help, I do think it's a windows error.. it sucks how much is going wrong right now on my comp. (Acrobat just stopped working because I have too many fonts installed but even when I took out a bunch of them it still won't open, I needed Acrobat to open the manual for my Gmini.. I was freaking out until I realized I could just use my laptop to read the pdf.. d'oh! Now I'm getting some weird error that the system recovered from a serious error and I ran chkdsk and a virus scan but nothing came up and I'm just like, WTFever.)

I can get to where it will let me format the drive, I don't care about the mp3s because I have backups on my computers, but I don't want to lose all the software that archos gives you since they just put it on the mp3 hard disk. They'll probably tell me to reformat me and send me somes discs or something.. hmm...

Ok.. frell Norton. Ran a full system scan twice in the past few days, and there were no infected files according to Norton. I've been getting weird messages and weird things have been going on, so I DLed McAfee from AOL and within 1 second of it being installed it showed me 3 infected files and two trojans!!

As far as the mp3 player goes, I formatted it via the player itself, and it still wouldn't connect right, it would prompt me to format from the computer, and I tried but it said that it couldn't finish the formating. WTF? It's got to be something with the fat32 on this comp, because I have to format it as fat32 otherwise it won't work, but it's still not doing what it's suppose to.. and there is NOTHING on the archos anymore since I formatted it... faoiweutioweutoigjldkgfwoieutoiwug2o3i

Must call them tomorrow maybe they can help... ::sigh::

You could also try a System Restore. Maybe that fixes the whole fat32 ordeal. But what the hezmana did you do to the USB connection to cause all of this? ;)
