Edmonton day care shut down after 2nd baby left alone
Last Updated: Feb 25 2005 07:24 AM MST
EDMONTON - A day care that left an infant locked inside alone in the dark has been shut down after another toddler was found unattended in a playground.
The 20-month-old child was left alone in an outdoor playground Wednesday, in freezing temperatures.
The Alberta Ministry of Children's Services took the rare step of immediately removing the licence for the Bearspaw Day Care Centre, Ron Bos, a spokesman for Edmonton Child and Family Services, told Canadian Press.
"It was a second incident regarding a lack of supervision and putting a child at imminent risk in the past month, so we felt we had no choice but to issue a stop order and immediately close the day-care centre," he said.
Paul Kovacs, the caretaker of a neighbouring apartment building who found the child after hearing him cry, says day care staff tried to deny the incident happened.
"They denied the charges or the accusations, and then I notified social services, because I wanted to make sure the parents of the kids know," Kovacs said. "At least the parents of that kid know what happened to their child."
The day care first came under public scrutiny on Jan. 27, when a six-month-old boy with asthma was locked up alone for about three hours after staff went home for the night.
A provincial probe found the day care didn't have parents sign their children in and out as required under government regulations. It banned the centre from caring for children under 19 months of age.
The owner of the day care, Bonita Berezanski, declined comment Thursday.
The move to close down the centre leaves 36 families without day care for their children.
"I think it's the best decision social services could have made," parent Wendy Maxwell, who used the day care, said. "I was convinced the last time this happened that it was a sincere mistake. Obviously, it's unfortunate that it had to happen again, to yet another baby."
But Suzanne Sakaguchi says social services should have allowed the centre to stay open until parents could make other arrangements.
"I've been scrambling all afternoon, trying to find care, because my husband and I both work, so we need care," she said. "It's devastating. I just don't know what to do in this situation."
"All the parents who have to find day care for their children, you can't find it in one day," Candace Petrovic added.
Childrens' Services is providing parents with a list of day cares with open spaces.
The Bearspaw Day Care has 14 days to appeal the decision.
