I have four right now and wasn't planning on getting any more for a long time. But our rescue has a group of five rats right now who are almost two years old (average lifespan of a domesticated rat is 2-3 years) and until they came to us about a month ago, have lived in tiny cages with no toys. They were not taken out of the cage except for cage cleaning. Rats are very smart and need mental stimulation, so this is a pretty sad life for a rat. Oh yeah, they were also removed from a STUDIO apartment with 11 cats and apparently the place just reeked of pee. :g2f:
The three girls have been adopted, and of the two boys, one is sick and will most likely not live that much longer. The boys are being kept together until the sick boy passes as they have lived together all of their lives and are very attached. As long as the sick boy is alive, they will stay with their foster dad, as the sick rat and the foster dad have become very attached. Foster dad takes good care of the rats, but the healthy boy is VERY skittish and the foster dad wants someone is really looking for someone with more experience handling rats.
Well...
I started thinking about how the dimensions of my cage can hold five rats and the fact that no one is going to want to adopt a two year old boy as he'll probably not live much longer than a year at the most, and doesn't even like being handled.
And how this boy really deserves a home.
So, in short, I would like to annouce that I am a sucker.
Without further ado, here's Pistol
