I got a call from my friend Deonna this morning. We've been friends since we were nine years old, and I've rarely heard her this upset. She just found out that the man who murdered her father is up for parole--his hearing is later this month.

This man shot and killed Deo's father and two uncles, and seriously wounded her mom, aunts and grandmother. Right in front of her, her brothers and sister, and her cousins--all kids under the age of 10, some as young as four.

Short version: Her family was having a BBQ. The two guys next door were drinking and shooting guns. Her dad and uncles politely asked them to put the guns away, as there were numerous kids running around. The guys copped attitude, an argument ensued, and they came over and starting shooting everyone in sight. Deo's dad threw himself in front of a bullet to keep her younger brothers from getting shot.

Needless to say, this was a VERY traumatic thing. Deo was one of the few who actually got a good look at the guy's face while we was shooting, and had to testify at the trial. No one in her family ever completely recovered from it. And now, the guy might go free ...

Deo's a basket case. She's determined to do everything in her power to make sure this man stays in jail. I feel for her, and I can't say that I personally disagree with her.

I'm not asking for bad vibes for this guy, or that you hope he stays in jail. But please, keep Deo in your thoughts and prayers. She a mother of three herself now, and her kids are about the age she and her siblings were when all this happened.

WOW...that sounds like its straight out of a movie. I could not even begin to imagine what something like that would be like. There should be no such thing as parole for that guy. I am thinking good thoughts for your friend and hope that guy fries even longer in jail...he deserves it.

Yeah, hard to believe, isn't it? If you have to get arrested for something, make sure it's in Florida. Criminals don't seem to stay in prison very long here, compared to in other states.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the good thoughts give you guys an update ...

The hearing was today. Apparently the man was convicted before certain laws were changed, so he'll be getting a parole hearing every five years. However ... his sentence was 155 years ... and as it was explained to my friend, the most the panel at these hearings can do is knock 5 years off his sentence, at least for the forseeable future. Which means that, barring an act of God, the guy will die in prison.

My friend is MUCH relieved, as is the rest of her family. Thanks again for all the good thoughts and prayers, guys!

That's good news. It's always so hard on the families who have to worry about it though.
