I usually do butter on mashed (since they can get kinda dry). But I like the sour cream and chives idea!

I put butter in the taters when I mash them. Cream too. THEN the gravy goes on top. :D No fake potatoes for me. :yuck: My aunt used to peel one potato and leave the skins on the sink and then serve us instant, thinking we couldn't tell the difference. I'd rather chew on my own arm than eat instant potatoes. :hork:

Actually I am a little confused about the butter option......
'Proper' mash, at least the way my mum taught me, has to be made with butter....
cook the spuds, drain off the water, add a little milk and a (generous) knob of butter and return to the heat till the butter melts; then mash!

That's how you do it, but the topping is extra butter. I used to do that, but I never do it anymore.

I believe that is the way that my mom makes them and that is the reason why I don't add anything to them. They are too yummy to ruin.

Only because it's true. I know for a fact that the Chinese place that was next to the video store I worked at in high school was shut down by the health dept for serving the rats they found in the dumpsters out back!

From what I've heard that's only in southern China (the area of Shanghai) and such dishes are very expensive. Beijing on the other hand got some great dishes that consists mostly of pork, beef and duck. I thought it was better than the 'westernized' Chinese food.

Your other option is Tay-go-gi (sp) in Korea ;) Not cat... dog. But not just any dog... these are specially bred as livestock. Expensive, a delicacy...

They are used on the reservation north of where I live too. Not as much now as in years past, but many of the older Indians still use them. One of the older Indians that my grandpa used to cowboy with would offer to cook for all the guys. He would wait until they had eaten their first bowl of soup and then say, "Dig a little deeper. More puppy in the bottom." :D (now the stock phrase at our dinner table)
