I have an interview with the Washington Post next month. and i just had an interview with my school newspaper for an editor position. and i'm still working on the paperwork for USA Today. I have a third internship to send paperwork to.
My life is going at 300 mph and it's really fun...but it's soooo much work.
Please pray for me or keep me in your thoughts. I'm really trying to do 10 billion things at once. I really want the editor position at my paper. i think my interview went well but I really really want the position. it's pretty much what i've been working towards for a long time.

I recently graduated with a bachelor's in criminal justice with honors, and I cannot find a job. None of my friends can either. Right now, I'm going to be a seasonal worker at Lowe's. ie, doing the same manual labor I did before going to college, except for less pay and less complex work.
Internships are very important things to have, so try and get those.
Ah well, I will try to join the Secret Service someday.

Tell me about it. I just graduated with a master's in environmental science and engineering and am still working as a lab chemist. *sigh* The search continues...

Thanks guys!
for all of you guys who are more ahead of me...well, i think you guys are brave brave souls for entering the world. i've still got a bubble called college. and then i'll have the bubble called graduate school. so i won't enter the "real" world for another few years.
Owlman, have you ever considered interning for the FBI or the NSA? they do offer internships and you could easily find a branch near you.
eta_carinae, have you looked into work opportunities with other universities? big researching universities are always looking for more researchers and you just might fit their qualifications. i mean, you have a master's degree and that does seem to be above being a researcher, but it's a start...it's a foot in the door for someone to consider you for another position in the future. plus, it gives you the ability to interact with other kinds of people so they might keep you in their mind.
have you thought about teaching? with a master's degree, you're more than qualified to teach some classes.
good luck with your submissions, TheBladeRoden!

Good luck AgentSun! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.
If those biggies don't work out when it comes time to get your real job, don't overlook the smaller metro papers. I can't say much for the editorial side of things, but I've worked for two Cox newspapers and have enjoyed my work and the people I work with...but I've mainly worked in prepress, so I don't know too much about how the editorial folks are.

Good luck! I know how tough these things can sometimes be. I've been trying to get into either the editing field or else zoology since graduating college in May of 2003, but I'm still working as a kennel tech, hoping something will open up. Best of luck!

i've been told that there's a small benefit to putting up your resume on places like monster.com and hotjobs.com but that you can't expect people to go chasing after you...you have to make people notice you. and emails can always get deleted or sent to the spam bin. snail mail is harder to get rid of. it takes space on a desk.

Nope. I need money. So, I need a real job.
I may try to work my crap job during the week, and work at the guitar store on weekends.

Well I certainly screwed up that last application. You had to go on site to fill out the form and get interviewed. Unfortunately whilst I was filling out the form I forgot my address and zip code, the phone numbers and addresses of my previous jobs, and the phone numbers and I never knew the addresses for my references. But they wouldn't leave to get my references. So I had to turn in a half empty application and explain to the interviewer how I would forget my own apartment address.
Perhaps it's just as well though. Who wants to work 40 hours a week in a warehouse that can get up to 90 degrees during the summer?

... I had to turn in a half empty application and explain to the interviewer how I would forget my own apartment address.
LOL! I did that once just after I moved. I found the best reference for that kind of stuff was to fill out a State of Texas or Federal Application that I downloaded off the web. They are so detailed in the area of names, addys, phone numbers, education and skill sets and it's easy to keep a printout in your job-hunting stuff .

actually, internships increase your chances of getting a job actually in your field. plus, it might not be a bad idea since you don't work 40 hour weeks at the internship. you devote a certain number a week but you can have a regular job otherwise.

It was next to impossible to get a research position at the school I just graduated from, let alone one where I am not a student. Although I admit, I haven't thought about it.
Regarding teaching - I did do a bit as a TA, but I assume you mean something like highschool. I've thought about it. In fact, one of the guys I work with right now is a retired teacher and he told me the schools around here would hire me no problem with a master's degree. But teaching isn't my number one choice, I want to work more "in the field" so to say. Not to mention the fact that working with a "retired" teacher isn't very encouraging... But if I can't find something, it may become a possibility eventually.

i think one of my professors is teaching us to basically take what you can get but understand that just because what you get isn't what you want to get or take, doesn't mean it won't turn out to be a stepping stone to what you WANT to get.
basically, just because it's not your cup of tea to teach right now, doesn't mean that it won't open a door to something that is more suited to you. i think teaching might be a stepping stone for you to do something else. it takes one move to get someone's attention...if you make a move, maybe someone will notice.

My son has the same degree, with honors too. He's been working as a hotel auditor for money.
He finally got a job working in a round house for mental patients. He's ready to go to Iraq, I'm begging him not to. He is my only son. On top of that my daughter has to have a liver transplant and she's only 30.
I'm also trying to get a new job ....it's rough out there.....I've never seen it so bad...and gas...is well alot....Prayers for us all.....what a world.....where is Farscape when you need it....Ha....

It's good that you're taking an aggressive approach to your education. I should have been more aggressive, but it worked out pretty well for me. :)

Well.... the thing is right now that most of the jobs I find attractive say you need 3-5 years experience. So I need desperately to get that 3-5 years experience. Right now all of my experience has been working in labs. I need field/engineering experince to get the jobs I want. So teaching now would kind of derail that a bit...
Though, if you can believe it, I actually considered teaching English in Japan for a year. There was a man at the career fair last fall that about fell over when I showed interest (with a master's degree), said I would definelty get in if I applied. But I decided I needed to get started on my career and not waste a year having fun when my competitors - I mean peers - were out getting experience. So, meh. I don't know.
I have to say, AS, I am very impressed by how forward thinking you are. You've really got a plan going, and that is awesome :aok:

The job market sucks right now. For my last PI interview, I was competing with a former bodyguard for Pantera!

maybe you're not looking into the right job field right now. have you thought (with your law enforcement and everything) being a consultant to a movie studio? i mean, yes, you live in houston, but there are studios there that may need services to get things right or to get consulting on procedure or something.
you should look into interning at the FBI or something. heck, i've been looking into it and if you travel to Washington D.C. we might compete next year for an internship spot!

I too know what it's like. I graduated with a bachelor's in Accounting, second to last in my class, and after a 11 year struggle.
I've got concentration, learning, and cognitive disabilities which are so bad that it takes me between 3 to 9 times longer than a normal person to learn or do actively mental things. I've been "let go" from numerous jobs because I'm either way too slow, or I often make critical judgement errors when multitasking or forced into quick decisions. My last job was cashiering, I got fired because I kept taking an hour and a half to to close my kiosk, which should normally take a half-hour to do. Before that I had a job making copies, but was eventually replaced because I was 30% slower than most of the others after 2 months on the job.
There are people here a lot worse than you. I'll likely never earn anything more than a few dollars above minimum wage. But you, you got potential. Things'll go your way eventually dude, just wait and see! :)

i got another email today, this time from the American Medical Student Association. They had a Public Relations internship open and I emailed them with my resume a few weeks ago...well, they emailed me back but i have 1 confirmed internship and 2 other offers on the table already. i don't know what to do about this one. i think i'm going to interview for it and just see what it entails.

i had my interview last week...they haven't made decisions yet, i guess. or they're getting all the paperwork through. i'm trying my hardest not to just ask. my editor really seemed to act like i already had the position...this sunday i'm going in again for observation. learning the tricks of the trade and all. you don't do that with just random writers. you do that with people you want to train and groom for a specific purpose.

I put my "selective" resume on Monster.com and got over 200 replies. Some were genuine jobs. So employers are actually looking at those resumes.
